he mentioned it was kraftpaper. wikipedia says it's "a porous paper with high elasticity and high tear resistance, designed for packaging products with high demands for strength and durability."
my guess is, it can be waxed afterwards. but i could be wrong. the paper appears to be sold already waxed too. i'll try to check out in a craft shop, how rigid it is in this form. otherwise i think waxing after the folding shouldn't be too hard to accomplish using shredded candles and an iron. just an example http://www.auntannie.com/CraftRecipes/WaxingPaper/
i'd go for the thickest kraftpaper, that is still flexible enoug to be folded in form.
