. . . I am still hunting for the perfect ELB brush. I need something that is not as wide as the ELB diameter but also has some soft bristles on the sides and more importantly the end of the brush so I can get the stuff at the bottom.
I have a dozen ELB's. I mangled one with the 2-cap method and another trying to use an ELB/HT to mod a Q (no cigar), otherwise the rest are still in pretty good shape since a year. I'm using the same brush as you (I followed your link) and haven't had a problem with stuff at the bottom. It all comes out when I do the sides, using both a circular and an in/out motion.
. . . I wonder if the lack of insulation material around the glass bamboo at the base was a purposeful change to allow more heat to escape out from the internals, instead of building up too much? . . .
My March & July vintage Clouds have no insulation around the bottom section of the bamboo. I can actually see the circuit board thru the bamboo glass. If there was insulation at the base, that had to be in a later revision.
