Underdog Log Vapes

I have a custom stem inquiry, would it be possible to make a nylon stem with glass instead of stainless steel, same size and operation, just with a glass piece where the steel would be? Not that I don't LOVE the nylon stems! It's just something that occurred to me while vaping:science: and I figured I would see if it was a possibility. I think I would be curious to try that!

I have, in my possession a brand new dog! I love it, and if you are on the fence about this device, just buy it. It kills. Period.

Dumb newbie questions:

The glass stems... Should I drop another screen on there? Wil the material combust if it hits the heater? I'm figuring there is a technique involved :)

What voltage do you guys generally use?

Sorry for the dumb questions. I am having some vertigo issues and it's making it hard to read. I planned on pouring through this thread, but my eyes won't do it tonight. I put away the Solo and shut off the Cloud. I intend on bonding with my new friend and try to stay cool in this heat wave!

I use both of my dogs at 12v for direct draw and 12.8 for GonG stems through water.. Also I only use the gong stems on my water pieces with the UD upside down so nothing falls through into the heater, and for direct draw, I like to hold the stem like a joint with a slightly upright tilt, and bring the heater to the tip.

No questions asked are stupid. ;-)

I would generally try to keep the Materials with a gap between the heater, but I get stuff stuck in the port all the time. I just gently tap or fish it out with the provided poker.

I usually keep my voltage around 13.5 when in use. After use I put it between 9-10 to save on the wear and tear.

I'm usually using mine upside down as well. But when I use it direct I'm pretty bad about leaving the stem on the heater, and having the materials resting on the heating. It has never combusted(sp) it, but it can brown it darker than I'd like sometimes.

Depending on your preference I don't really think its anything to worry about. If you are like me and like to keep things low temp most of the time, you might be best to remove the stem between hits and hit it horizontally (like a joint). But if you don't want to fuck with it, I think you will also be fine.

But my professional advice would be to pair that pup with some glass :p

IME the dogs deliver really well without much know how, but once you spend some time with it you can really dial it in to your preference that can take it from a good vape to a great vape. Good idea with the bonding :peace:

Thanks so much everyone! It's so much fun learning about a new vape. I'm hitting it at 13 right now and it is milking up my fixed stem 18mm like crazy. I just stick it in and it makes a nice connection, hehe. I need a GonG stem.

You'll find that your load becomes "glued" into the stem after the first rip. When i use a stem direct draw i usually look up at the ceiling for the first rip.

Get some 14mm gong stems, they work great.

Hope all you Dogs (and lurking Future Dogs) had a great weekend.. ours was busy and we're still trying to catch up on the emails and messages, almost there.

One thing missing on the comparisons above is how is the device powered. Does the power come through a UL stickered "wall wort" or VVPS or does it plug directly into a 110 volt socket? Anything that plugs directly into the wall should have a UL sticker. Going through the UL process insures no fire or shock hazard from the device. We ran into that right away when we started Zaps in 2001. Also the "resistor heater" mentioned above is a ceramic coated resistor used in log vapes for many years.

As for Dogs, all I can say is Dave bellied up right after our bust last summer and sent us a couple UDs and other creations from UD land. I have had my dog at 13.1/13.2 24/7 since that time. It never misses a beat and always produces massive clouds whenever required. I use the red flame VVPS,($40 delivered) the very first of many we tried. For some reason the coppers left it in my shop. That VVPS just keeps going and going while running nice and cool. Also easy to make a vape plug wire as the knobs unscrew so you can wrap a wire around the terminals. No plug needed with that VVPS except the plug that goes into the log vape and some wire.

One of the comforts we have had since being forced out of business is that Dave is around churning out these dogs. Very good product with excellent service and he is always looking to improve both.

It is also easy to check operating voltage without taking the dog apart. Just measure voltage across the two wires with the dog plugged in. Those little green/black replacement plugs work great as they have the set screws on the plug so you can put voltmeter probes right on the set screws while everything is on. Or. strip a small portion of the power wires and check voltage across the two wires.

Thanks for stopping by Rick, lots of good tips there. Hope your ZapDog(s) are well and treating you kindly.

@ Yoshi - send me a message about your idea for a custom stem and we can talk it over. The primary problem that I see without knowing much about what you're specifically thinking is that of where and how to secure a screen in the stem. Anyways message me and we'll talk. :p

Alright, to the shop before the heat turns up for the day. :uhoh:

Ok, I assume it's cool to soak the stems in ISO? The rubberized part is OK with 91%?

Yep, soak away.. all the various stems (besides wooden parts on WonGs, etc) can be cleaned with whatever strength ISO you have. We usually use 91% here ourselves. :peace:

Thanks, man. I'm sitting here in my air conditioned bedroom with my new dog. And the 4 real dogs. It's still 90 in the rest of the house. My wife is away and I'm working from home tomorrow! So, I ground up some Deadhead OG, Pineapple Express, and Blue Widow and now I'm just dipping stems :)

Also working on pieces for the next refresh and trying to decide which woods to work in, if anyone has any requests post them in the next couple days and I'll see if I have any and if so see if I can work them in to the refresh.

Mmmm can't wait! My friend is about to buy one for his Dad so it's good to see some new ones will be up. How about some darker woods, burls too? I think shape-wise you should do more 'clean' dogs like that California Black Walnut you had with the rings cut into it. I hate to say it but some with their rounded shapes look a bit phallic to me. :dog:

@ ogcook - Cool, I'll see what I can do in regards to darker woods, etc and some more 'clean' shaped ones.. I get the phallic comment pretty frequently so no worries you're not the only one thinking it.

i unplugged the UD a little while back because i seemed to have random cool downs often.. i even spent a week keeping a close eye on the cord making sure it wasn't unplugged before each hit.. i figured the power supply might have something to do w/ it.. 3-4 days ago, i randomly decided to test the power supply and it seemed fine.. so i plugged the dog back in and let it heat up.. since then i have had zero random cool downs.. i'm assuming i must have been slipping and not noticed it unplugged often enough to cool down from taking an unplugged rip? even though i was trying to keep my eye on just that? that's the way it seems now.. i have really missed the underdog i'm glad i decided to try again.
