The Tempest by Mad Heaters & Phatpiggie

I'm seeing a few people lately preferring more conduction to make the vapour smoother. I think that smoothness comes at the cost of the terpenes.

I tend to want my terpenes intact, more for how they contribute to the entourage effect of the strain. I recall when my main driver was the Weedeater with shovel head bowl. I would pre heat the bowl and it gave lots of conduction, but it felt like every strain started to taste and feel the same.
I agree that the differences between strains are more pronounced the more pure convection it is. However there is a roundedness in the flavor I prefer when adding in some conduction. I will keep in mind what you mention about the effects, this is an interesting observation.

If I pull too hard and too often on a ball vape that works mostly through convection and is very powerful, I will tend to get a very distinct, hoarse and dry cough, not using any water for conditioning and filtration aggravates this. I get this on my SSV if I pull too hard and use insufficient water cooling, for example I will get this more on a globe than on a recycler, and I also tend to get this more if I lower the temperature, because then I will tend to pull harder to get more fulfilling vapor. With the Tempest I was also getting this cough when I was going crazy with the draw speed and using the mostly convection wand configuration, and now I find that with it leaning a bit more to conduction it is much smoother on the throat.

What I am getting from the Tempest is this: it is incredibly customizable, so much so that if the form factor agrees with you it is almost guaranteed you will find a combination of adjustments that will make it perfect for your taste. It is also great for the scientist who appreciates the ability to experiment with parameters and learn more about the impact these parameters have on the experience. Between wand adjustment, air intake, and cooling, there is a sweet spot for everyone it seems.

Agreed on all points. I'll also say I like conduction vapes. I just wouldn't use conduction all day everyday as it has this homogenization effect imo.

I've seen a pattern of medical users wanting to use conduction all day every day however. I guess it depends on the user and their priorities. I personally choose pure convection devices for daytime use.

So my dumbass put the Tempest into the wand the other way round. The part between the mouthpiece and grooves has kinda turned black. Vape still works fine. Would an iso wash fix it?
What’s the wrong way round … and why would it stain the finish ?

Just to add can anyone post some pics for the best way to use in the wand (best depth etc)

He means he put the mouthpiece end into the induction heater. The wand heated up the titanium and melted the inner plastic component.

I've never come close to accidently doing it. But I guess it's something to watch out for.

Oh ok
I just thought you couldn’t put the Tempest in from underneath or something .

Hey guys!

what torches do you guys recommend for cleaning the balls?
also i was looking at stainless steel ball tea strainers on amazon anything i need to be careful about?

Really anything with a decently strong and proper flame. Culinary torch works fine, same with my blazer.

I've been using a tea strainer from amazon for a few months now, holding onto it with a pair of pliers when heating. Works well so far, just be cautious and attentive when torching

Regards the issue of conduction/convection and taste and chest irritation. As a general rule some people are more sensitive to irritation of the airways caused by different terpenes. It seems this may be more prevalent (from reports of experience, not scientific investigation (that I know of)) with the lighter weight terpenes, and these are the ones most likely to degrade at higher temperatures, reducing the range of flavours and often reducing irritation. This of course also alters the profile of the weed, changing the experience in varying degree from person to person.

Regards the heating by induction with the wand in particular, I suspect the area of effect of the coil is narrower that the length of the steel sleeve. If the Tempest is allowed to sit deeper in the wands cup, the lower (nearer the bowl) part of the sleeve will be heated more than if the tempest is less deeply positioned, meaning the source of heat is being applied nearer the bowl. Bearing in mind Titanium is very heat conductive, it would be expected for the bowl to get hotter simply from the conduction of that heat, having less distance to travel before reaching the bowl, regardless of any induction of the bowl itself.

Hi. If someone is still looking... they have them in stock. (GER, EU ...maybe WorldWide)
https://verdampftnochmal.de/mad-heaters-tempest_3

and while reading through the reviews Thomas L. (Thanks!) pointed me to a trick/feature about the Reload Gen 2.
Just open the 2 screws and turn the magnet and the tempest fits in like in a wrench. Opening is now a now brainer.

Wow. Masterly built.

In the pcs mine is already turned.

I picked up the Wand for use with my dynavap from Vgoodiez back in August, it included the "Dynavap Adapter Kit", a glass cup surrounded by silicone fins. It looks like that has been replaced with a 3d printed looking thing.

My question is, will that Dynavap Adapter work with the Tempest, or do I also need the "Wand Adapter" form Mad Heaters? I was going to try to look up the specs on the first one but the page for it is now 404 at Vgoodiez.

I guess the real question is, are the Tempest head and the Dynavap head (2018 OmniVap: Titanium) close enough to the same size? Tempest is on the way in the mail - I was able to grab one during a brief window when it suddenly showed up as available a few weeks ago, but now I'm wondering if I should have gotten the adapter thing.

I was watching a tempest video by a weed tuber and saw in the description that the next batch of tempest will be different? Was curious if that was true and how theyll be different?

From my experience using the 'pest and the wand, but have never used any DV's with it...

I have the Tempest Wand adapter set to hold the heater on the deeper side of the range suggested by the MadHeaters Tempest instructions on the MH site. With it set like that the topmost part of the head, the Vi housing, is level with the red/orange plastic circle surrounding the Wand's 'hole' from the underside of the Wand, i.e. looking from the side of the battery compartment, not the display side.
You shouldn't expect to be allowing the top of the 'pests head protrude beyond that point.

That's assuming when you mention size you meant in that dimension, since the other dimension - width or diameter - is mostly only relevant in terms of it simply being able to fit in the Wands coil, i.e. it does or it doesn't but not a lot of nuance beyond that?

Was curious if that was true and how theyll be different?
Maybe ask @Brenyo directly? If he doesn't know then I don't know who would! 😉

Although I did notice on the MH website, on the Manual page listing the contents - i.e. the various different manuals, the Tempest has been labelled "Tempest gen 1" indicative of a potential new version in the works?

What video was this, are you able to share it?
Given how meticulous they are with getting it all right and the strive to have the best performing products (tempest calibration a prime example), I doubt this is it for the tempest.

Gen 1 revolve was awesome, genuinely changed the way I could use my DV, yet it was still improved, not by function as such, but in terms of how the product carried out it's job.
The Gen 2 added refinements that made it visually more appealing, and easier to set-up to your own individual style or preference.

I expect this will be the same for any future tempest generations, works as well, just easier to use and set-up, maybe a simpler assembly for the indicators etc, I was fine with it, but some weren't.

I've only heard bren say there will be a new batch around summer neat year.
He's not said anything about any potential changes as yet but I guess that doesn't mean there won't be.

Admittedly, I absolutely love the whole mad heaters cooling unit design for these stick type devices, it's the best out there, I really believe that.
But there is still a couple of things I'd change about the main unit design, probably small things that are more personal than anything else but I doubt I'm alone in the small changes I'd like to see.
At the same time, the tiny things I dislike, aren't enough to put me off buying due to how well the products work, and no device is ever absolutely perfect for any one person, I'm happy with that.

I would imagine that there will be a refinement to the tempest at some point, but given how well it work as it stands, I'd imagine they're working on other things.

Like a **cough cough** sense induction heater 😉😆

Which I'd love, but the wand works so well, and I'm so used to it now, I'm in no rush 👀

Hope this works...

The right hand pic shows the Tempest's glass cup set in the wand from the back. On the left you can see the glass protrudes about 1mm past the red 'ring' surrounding it. That means the Tempest if placed at full depth in the glass cup would be able the deepest it should be, and so if there was no glass cup in place, you shouldn't allow the tempest to protrude as far as the glass cup is here (i.e. in left pic the end of the Tempest would not quite be visible, not protruding past red ring). Hope that helps.

One thing I've noticed is that the VI housing got a lot of little scratches below the VI itself from using it with the Reload V2. To be fair, I didn't really pay attention to how I remove the Tempest from the Reload. I suppose it happens when you pull it off into the corner of the side created by the round recess (like at 45 degrees).

The scratches seem to be superficial, but are definitely noticeable visually. I also wonder how it will be with long-term use, given I'm daily driving my Tempest for a month now.
Has this happened to any of you, or does my Reload perhaps have some imperfections that cause the VI housing to scratch up around that area?

Been using one for almost a year, I've got a few indicators housings and induction sleeves from different batches (I think), and they will end up marked, the resting and removing will create small marks here and there, perfectly normal, no metal will sustain it's finish given the use we put them through.
Good news is that the steel is good quality, and with a bit of time it will polish up and look great again.

I only use the underside of the reload lid to take the cap off, magnet isn't so strong you have to prise it off but still plenty strong enough to hold it securely

Agreed! It has the advantage of having two arc's cut out of the circular magnetic part that grips the head securely so a stronger magnet isn't needed, and no sharp edges to scratch the Vi housing. I believe it was added for the Tempest specifically (if not it should have been! 😉)

Once someone showed me how well the Tempest head fits Reload on its side, I’ve always capped/decapped horizontal.

More than one way to skin a…well now that I attempted to use this colloquialism for the first time in decades I realize it hasn’t aged as well as I have. But you get the gist.

I have been really careful with the cap, and not touching the induction sleeve has helped keep the finger marks to a minimum,

But I have noticed scratches on the very top of the VI. I guess it's inevitable, and it probably can be polished out so it'd not a huge issue

thanks for the tip! just tried it and it seems so obvious, but I would most likely never have thought about it on my own.
