The "Project" DIY Herbal Vaporizer

I'm a hobby turner myself so I'm definitely interested in picking up an SF and trying out some sleeving options with some nice different woods. Maybe cocobolo to match the red RX200....

If you want to test sleeves, get the "Eraser" version. The "Pure SF" (I'm ok to settle on that middle ground...) lacks the SS tube which is required to insulate the sleeve from the coil (and also because it bounces some of the heat back, being a semi-reflective shiny surface)

Unless you planned on making a sleeve around the glass?

@phattpiggie: I'm notoriously not a fan of silicone, it appears that I must be extra-sensitive to it somehow... Another advantage of the "Pure SF" is that thanks to the GonG connection there are no o-rings on the downstream vapor path.

I consider it to be a genuine full glass and SS vapor path. The only step further would be to isolate the heater (ex: halogen bulb) and use a stem with integrated glass screen or pinch (I think @DDave makes some?)

PS: "Pure SF" could well be "pure science fiction" for those not in the know... :p

Thats the exact debate I'm having in my head right now. I think the pure sf could be really cool with a wood sleeve (for protection from heat, aesthetics, and maybe even some insulation to keep good temps) but am not sure how fragile it would be. Of course the sleeve would need to have a tight fit and so I'm tempted to go with the eraser version for that reason, but don't want to miss out on a superior experience with the all glass...
I'm definitely not a big fan of the eraser part of the eraser so it would get substituted for something else, but I can't decide between the two.

13 bowls (stems) battery life, very nice.
Next to test is Presa 100W with 26650 4500 mAh Brillipower and 18650 3000 mAh LG HG2 batteries.
...I paid $96 for whole rig with extra black glass stem...

This really interests me - but i know nothing about mod boxes as i dont vape e-juice.

So got some questions if you dont mind.

1) Already have a Milaana. Is it worth getting the project as well? How do they compare.

2) There is the glass one - pure. The eraser (not sure what this is made out of) and the wooden one. Are they all available now?

3) Does this work with a TC mod box? You just have to set the right resistance? Correct? I guess you could find this with a voltmeter?

4) @Pipes do you ship internationally.

5) Want the splinter when it comes out - so the side by side looks like a no go. Would like replacable batteries. Looking at an evic box. Is a 1 x 18650 box enough?

6) Do the stems come with the project.

Thanks for your answers in advance - its a bit tricky finding all the answers with 40+ pages of info.

1) Imo, yes. I had the milaana as my daily driver until I got the project.

2) The wooden one isn't available as far as I know, but the other two are. I prefer the eraser but some prefer the pure sf.

3) Yes, you need a tc box mod. No you don't need a voltmeter. At least, I don't have one. Everything is done on the mod.

4) Yes, he does. He ships from Canada.

5) 1 x 18650 is enough, but I prefer my 2 battery cuboid for battery life. According to pipes, it more than doubles battery time.

6) Yes, a stem comes with the project. However, I prefer using a glass arizer air stem.

Also, I present to you all - the body that phatpiggie made for me. It is all from the same cocobolo blank, and he threw in the stem for me! The bottom piece is a square stem for my vc. I can't wait get this all!

Presa 100W with 26650 4500 mAh Brillipower - same impressive 13 bowls.
Presa 100W with 18650 3000 mAh LG HG2 - 10 bowls.

So, according to @Pipes, we may expect some fantastiche 20-25 bowls with 2-batteries mod, like Predator 228. This is absolute record, more than 17-18 bowls some reported with Solo 2. Sure, the whole Predator + Eraser rig weights 320 g vs Mighty's 230 g. But the former may overrun the latter 2,5 - 3 times :hmm:

I'm definitely interested in a project mod but I'm holding out for the moment as I've hit my VAS limit for a little while.

I know that when I get one I'll be hitting @phattpiggie for a custom wood setup.

I'm wondering if a flat stove top coil would work rather than the SS wire which takes up quite a bit of vertical space?

May we use whole-wood stem, with the bowl made of wood?
Is there any wood which can stand heat and doesn't smell?
Glass stems are too "conductive" due to high thermal capacity. I am looking for stem material with low thermal capacity to increase the convection part to the most.
Edit: I am OK with lesser bowl volume with wood, I understand that wood walls should be thick to be durable.

Quick question for all of you eraser heads:
If you needed to pick one (non-expensive) box mod for the eraser which would you choose and why?

I just bought Wismec Predator with double LG HG2 3000 mAh batteries. It is small, easy to operate due to large button and it charges batteries well itself. And I expect it to run 20-25 bowls from single charge, will see soon.

I REALLLYY want to try out this project but I wish there was a better HOW TO for noobs like me. Im very tech savey but I barely know anything about vape "Mods, tanks, atomizers". I would rather do this instead of buying a vape since i can swap out the batteries and ill probably save more and learn as well :)

can someone pleaseeeeeeee help me?

Thank you!

Hey follow FCers. I'd like to introduce the "Project". The result of an endeavor I had started back in 2012 in a DIY thread called the DIY Bulli Vaporizer. A success story which hopefully offered some good research information for all enthusiasts to benefit from.

The Project is a portable vape on demand herbal vaporizer which is close to 100% convection. Ecig technology has recently upgraded with TC (Temperature Controlled) for use with e-juice atomizers, and in doing so, paved the way for this device. The current mod boxes out there are getting very suitable for this procedure. Some better than others which I'll get into shortly.Adapting this technology into my Bulli project was a marriage made in heaven. Once a suitable coil or element was established, all flew into place.
I often thought about how to make it without having to buy a Bulli, which are very expensive to buy. My goal is to pass on this great vaping methodology so all FCers' can enjoy. You can bet that once the clone makers get wind or how easy this is, the market will be flooded. Just like those concentrate vaporizers which is just a coil sitting in a bowl.

So what's this about? I have figured out a way to make "The Project" very simply and economical and with materials easy maintainable when you know where to look. The intent here is to keep it open source so the Vape enthusiasts, who also have the DIY syndrome, can make a few and pass on the cheap goodness to others. It's the kind of mod that if you order the materials for 1 unit you may as well make 10-15 type thing. Hopefully a pyramid effect will be the outcome..

Prerequisites to get on-board are:

-Must own a TC MOD box
-Willing to discuss opinions and ideas on improvements
-Active FC member

Although most TC boxes will likely work, at this point I'd recommend the JoyTec]EVic VTC Mini or Cuboid.

The benefits of the VTC Include:

-Small Form Factor
-Temperature is top menu
-Display is large for this old fart
-GUI is very user friendly
-Ohms atomizer measurement is lockable
-Temperature changes at 10 degree per press. (Originally though was a downfall but better then clicking 10 times)
-Firmware is upgradeable (latest upgrade makes it a 75watt unit and introduced TCR setting abilities)

For a higher wattage, 2 battery mod, the Cuboid is a good pick. Almost the same as the VTC but a couple mils bigger in height and width. Heavier as well of course. Advantage would be longer battery life and not as hard on the batteries. Same display.

For the coil or element, I found that both Titanium and Stainless Steel work very good. Some mod settings need modifying to get the temperatures we need. The workable constant temperature needs to be 600 - 650 degree F. Most mods stop at 600 F so the work around is to use a Titanium coil in Nickel mode. Doing this adds 100-150 degrees onto the calculation the device puts out. When using this mod the numbers do not mean anything except up or down. I found a setting of 460 in F and Nickel mode gives a good place to start.

I have been using stainless steel element. SS316 and found it is also very stable and functions very well. To use the SS316 I found a manual TCR setting of 145 works very well and a starting temperature of 520 F. Once this project gets rolling, I suspect this to be measured and scrutinized to no end. Fun stuff for many.

Current parts list for the materials I used:

510 to Ego Adapter
304 Stainless Steel Piping
Stainless steel bolt M2.5*25mm (Phillips head, replaces above hex head)
304 Stainless Steel Nut M2.5
304 Stainless Steel M3*12*1mm Washer
A2 Stainless Steel M3*9*1mm Washer

304 Stainless Steel M2.5 Spring washers
#10 High Heat O Ring
#113 High Heat O Ring
Teflon Insulating Bushings
Titanium Heating Wire
SS Heating Wire
3/4" SS Screens 1/2" SS Screen
Dowelling. Local hobby store. (Canadian Tire for me)

This is the heart of unit. It inserts into a SS tube which, in turn, goes into a larger wooden outer sleeve. The sleeve goes past the end of the SS tube and makes a holder to slip the bowl into. The bowl is held in with high temperature O rings. In fact O rings are used throughout the unit to hold together.

I
have a couple units completed and starting to teach them to fly and leave the nest so they can spread the goodness around to forum members. Adopters willing to give one a good home, shoot me a PM. I think I'm going to start the pricing off at $30 + shipping. Considering the labour, a deal I think.

Remember, my hope is others will carry on with this and we'll have multiple providers.
There is a link to a picture gallery in my signature. I add to it as new developments happen. Shows the process in making these pups.

Cheers all and keep on DIYing!!!

Amazing!

I'm wondering if a flat stove top coil would work
Thanks for having wondering, I just tried to build a stove top coil, and now I see it's obvious!
No sign of hot spot, extraction is pretty homogeneous, even at high temps.
I tried it at 210°c, instant bubbler milk, golden brown ABV.

Now, I have to get an RX2/3, some VTC6, and the Project will become my main batterie/portable vaporizer !

Do you have any tips on making a good stove top coil? Does it matter if the coil is touching itself? How long of a piece of wire do you use? Is it as simple as a piece of wire from the middle, spin it around a few times and connect the other end of the wire? Thanks, I have been interested in making one for a while but my double stove coils failed miserably.

Glad it's working, I'm thinking of giving this a go. Does it save much vertical space?

I made the coil with the extra wire Pipes send with the Project, it doesn't touch itself (), and it is pretty difficult to build! Ahah!
It took me near 30 min, and 3 trials!
It ends down at .355Ω
Box settings:
TCR 170
150-220°C
40w
Algo PID: P=650 I=80 D=13

It save some space, but you'll have to cut down the 510-Ego adapter and the SS tube to shorten the whole thing ;)

Volute of Vapor
Actually I don't get a lot of time to spent on FC... so, sorry for all the posts I didn't liked....

My Project is came back in my DD list as a water filtered use device only... and I can't believe how smooth is the vapor...it's one of the rarest vape I never cough with!

My next plan (when more time avalaible) is to build a coil around a small piece of ceramic I got from another vape and to force the airflow to go through this heated ceramic. Is it better the wire to be directly in contact with the ceramic or not...?

What is the better lenght of wire I need?

Hi @oddjobold it was intimidating for me too (like the Hercules was also)... but it's easier than expected. Although be ready to deal with some issues due to user mistakes but don't gave up and you will be greatly rewarded by this vape when mastered .

@PPN

Picked up a second hand Evic VTC dual mod box.

Also on the waiting list for the Pure project, and very excited about the Splinter when it comes out. I think 510 dry herb vapes will be a lot more popular in the near future.

Shame there is a lot of rubbish chineese ones on the market at the moment.
