Charring means it is to hot, it happens at the end, at first tastes great but the end is when it starts to happen.

Charring at 383 isn't that good, unless you turned it up above 400 before hand.

If the rod in the center is the exposed ceramic heater, that would certainly explain the hotspots...

Hopefully I'm wrong though
