Low powered batteries shouldn't cause problems besides low performance... What kills tops, is applying power to a shorted circuit. Shorts are caused by an incorrectly assembled Hercules cartridge, or an improperly rebuilt cartridge, or unfortunately occasionally caused by having the cart screwed too tightly into the Persei top. How tight did you have yours screwed in? I killed one of my V1 single tops by having a perfectly assembled Herc screwed too tightly into it
Due to my research here I was very careful to test the herc for shorts each time I loaded it and I definitely didn't have it on too tight. I stopped as soon as I felt resistance. FWIW the herc itself still tests fine.
