Thought I’d share that my Nomad II arrived today! And it is beautiful!!!
I’m letting it sit and temperature adjust...it’s been in transit for about a month. Plus, I do have to work today...
So much to learn. Can’t wait to play.
And Dan already posted great pics of this one; it’s the stained amboyna burl.

Just took my Nomad II for its first test drive.
And I have virtually no experience with unregulated vapes.
And...unregulated is easy! Barely tried it and love the flavor and how intuitive it is. Minor adjustments to draw speed changes amount of warmth flowing up. FYI - I’m using the low heater version.
And it’s such a joy to hold.
I started with the glass stem (no cooling beads) and can’t wait to try the African Blackwood stem. Not sure when I’ll try the cooling beads.

More early thoughts.
I switched to the African Blackwood stem and so far much prefer it to the glass stem. I haven’t used the glass beads yet. I highly recommend you get a wood stem with your Nomad. I plan on getting a second!
The flavor from this vape is incredible. But I still have a learning curve to get past. Too much preheat and/or too strong a pull leads to some charring for me and corresponding less than great taste.
I’m also using the new briar basket. It’s very easy to fill and use. Still trying various tools to find the best scraper to help empty and clean it.
For this first round, I’m using ground flower from the Flower Mill. I think it is too course and am looking forward to trying a finer grind. This courseness may be why I’m getting only about 3-4 pulls per load. Even if that continues with a more fine grind, I’m okay with that because that’s the same number I get from my grasshopper and this vape is much easier to load and empty.
I have no idea how many loads I’ll get from a full battery or how I will notice it’s time to swap batteries. I’d love others to chime in.
Anyway, I’m thrilled with my Nomad. It is such a joy to hold, look at, and use. Before it arrived, I was tempted to get the Taffe Bowle. But now (and for now), my vas is more than quenched.

And pulling harder should actually cool the heater down. So if youre experiencing charring from 'pulling too hard' it could be because the pre-heat was too long, or your pull was too soft for too long.
Perhaps try pulling harder, until you're pulling so hard that the heater isnt able to keep up, and you won't get any vapor. Then reduce your inhale speed from there till you hit the sweet spot.
I always find it best to start with a slow draw speed for the first 5 seconds, then ramp up my inhale speed for the duration of the hit.
I imagine it like riding a wave, haha.

Thanks yall. I appreciate the words of encouragement. Y'all are the real reason I like this thread so much. Nomad ppl are the best on this whole forum. And you're absolutely right: patience is truly a virtue. I'm doing the best I can with yet another slowly dying grasshopper and a meh fury edge... I'm just sooooo ready for a little bit of handheld, handmade, wooden vaping beauty to help me cope with my new normal. (I'm a pro musician who's barely played music at all this past year. Hoping my nomad II will be my muse. I need inspiration to create).
(better strains in my nonlegal state would be nice too

EDIT: @Gup de Fump I just checked my email. I got on the Nomad I list March 4, 2019 ... at some point Dan made the decision to move on to the II and offered those of us up next the chance to be on the list for that instead if we want.

So i just got a email off Dan that a couple of spaces came up for batch 3 and was offered a spot.

Hey! Just checking in. I keep an eye on this thread, pretty much daily... but I don't always have time to reply. Been working my newts off trying to finish up both Nomad I custom painted sleeves, and Nomad IIs. Figured I would dump some photos.

Awesome stuff once again! You’ve been good at painting since the first custom Nomad sleeves, but these later ones are really impressive. Especially with all of the different styles!
There aren’t too many of us lucky to have one or have one on the way, but those of us who do really are lucky. I still think they’re the best looking vaporizers I’ve ever seen, and really maybe even the best functional art pieces of any kind that I’ve seen.
I don’t want to distract you from catching up on this stuff, especially while my sleeve is anxious to take its final shape, but if you’ve been making any progress on anything like accessories or other heaters it’d be cool to get an update on any of it.
If you’re focused on the backlog of sleeves and Nomad IIs and you’re saving the other stuff for later though, that’s cool. I’m pretty sure you don’t have the right mind for just doing repetitive tasks constantly forever though, so I’m guessing you’ve at least been thinking about some cool things.

A little update as well, some of you already know this, but I've got a new high heater module that has been going out with all the recent Nomads, and all Nomads in the future. It completely replaces the old high heater.
I've been able to test it for the last couple months, and it's AWESOME.
This heater is an evolution on the experimental "medium" heater that I was working on a while back.
The new high is much more user friendly compared to the older version. You don't have to toggle the fire button on and off to control the heat.
The coil geometry now matched the low heater, meaning.. the heat is better distributed over the entire surface of the heater. This, combined with the new double layer diffuser mesh update that I built into the Nomad II design, combines to give much more even heating, and less of a tendency to central hot-spot when pushing those fast extractions.
Pre-heat time is 3 seconds, plenty of vapor production on the first hit from cold. You can push it to fully extract a chamber full in 2-3 hits, with no need to stir, and achieving a slightly fuller extraction up into those higher roasty temp zones when compared to the low.
I would say that the low heater is still the king of flavor chasing, but the new high is pretty darn close, while maybe being a slightly better all-rounder.

Thanks dude! Much appreciated. And... my painting skills have definitely improved... I think working in so many different styles is like a turbo-booster for skill building.
The post above goes into a bit about the new heater. As for other accessories, I've got the cases pretty much buttoned up now. They're coming out verrryyyy cool.
I have made some tweaks to the briar herb chambers. I am now roasting them in the oven to pre-shink the wood so that when they are heated by the heater, they shrink a lot less and remain more stable. I've also done enough testing to confidently recommend soaking the entire wood chamber with integrated screen in ISO or acetone for cleaning. Which makes cleaning the entire chamber a breeze.
I just started including a roasted bamboo pokey stick with all orders as well. This little hand-carved tool is nice for unloading/loading and fits nicely inside of the fabric cases.
I am still working on something akin to a capsule system. I found that these briar wood chambers are so easy to load that I am debating the need for a case that holds multiples. Things could get a bit complex with all those friction fit tiny pieces. I am thinking, instead, about a herb case that makes on-the-go stem loading easier. Herb cases can hold a lot more product in a small area, compared to a capsule holder... so that could be a better way to go.
I've been branching out with new ideas for the buttons... I was able to test some labradorite... and it looks so cool! It's a cheaper option compared to opal, so I think it'd be a nice addition to the line-up.
Other than that, I am trying to keep myself from getting too involved with much else before I can get back on track with shipping out these Nomads....

I’m obviously not Dan, but there is a very long wait list that you need to get on first. I’d wager about a good year or more wait. So even if you had the coins this very second, you’d be SOL.
How long are you planning to produce these? I would certainly like to have one to call my own, but can't get one for the foreseeable future. My vape budget has been blown to smithereens.
Just want to make sure that I'll have the chance at some point

@Dan Morrison That’s more than I expected really, and it all looks great! I’m glad you’re mostly focused on getting the Nomads out because I know there are a lot of people anxiously awaiting one (including me), but it’s good to see other things are still evolving in the background a bit.
The old high heater seems interesting and more like some other unregulated convection heaters, in how you have to use it at least, but the new one sounds like an overall nicer experience with plenty of power still available! Looking forward to trying it, and especially the low heater. I guess I’ve become a bit of a flavor chaser...
The labradorite looks cool too; feels like a bit of a mix of organic and industrial and should be a great fit for some of these. So many great button options though... on’t forget to share a pic if you stick that in a Nomad!
If the capsule case system turns into an herb case I think that’s fine too, but I have a couple of requests for you to consider in that case. You may have a better idea, but I’m thinking of this as a wooden tube, maybe with a glass vial inside or something. Anyway, here are the ideas:
1. If you make it double sided it could hold different strains or hold AVB in one side. I’d like a couple in that case to take maybe a Sativa/Indica and CBD/AVB or just whatever I’ve got ground up at the time.
I suppose 4+ individual ones would also get the job done, but having 2 (or more) strains in one package might be nicer than fishing around for so many individual containers.
2. If you could give it a lip that lets the chamber sit just inside the top, maybe that would let you flip it and load it more in the way you said works best instead of just smashing the chamber down into the bottom of the tube?
In that case, maybe a thin metal cover could slide into the side of the tube right under the chamber and above the lip that holds it to perfectly fill the chamber?
It may not work out as well as I’m thinking, and you may already have a better idea, but there’s another possible way to handle it. It could even be square with a round hole if that makes it easier to deal with the cover, etc.
I also thought about similar dosing into a cap that would then be transferred into the chamber, but that’s more steps...and I thought about putting the chamber around the outside of the case for loading, which I think would work fairly well, but it wouldn’t completely fill the chamber as easily since the walls of the herb holder would be taking up space as you tried to load it...
Oh, and if there was a small section the same size as the chamber turned 90 degrees from the main holding area, you could turn it to dump flower down into a dosing section and then just stick your chamber on that (again hopefully with a lip to hold it in place) and flip it to dump it into the chamber. I regulate my backburner projects to after 5 O'clock, and weekends. Works nicely!
I think you're onto something with the herb container holding two or more strains. With more CBD on the market I tend to always blend, so having two strains available is practically a must.
I get your thinking on the loading, and I am currently leaning towards a square case with a round hole to insert the stem into. The form factor of a rectangular case is just more exciting for me.
And you're right about the loading style, personally I find that loosely sprinkling my herb into the chamber provides better convection performance, especially at the fast extraction end of the spectrum. For the fastest extraction I like a fast air speed for lots of heat delivery, and lots of evenly spaced air pockets in the load for even airflow. The tighter the load is packed, the more central hot spotting, or tunnelling, you get with a fast draw. Those are my observations...
I like the idea of the stem docking with the case in some way, so that when the two are paired, you have a free hand to use for loading your chamber. The goal would be to make this easy to load while walking/standing, no tabletop assistance.
I like the relaxing act of using a little scoop or shovel tool to load my chambers, all delicate like, haha. I like micro control over the ratio of cbd to thc. So Id like to make the whole loading process feel satisfying...tactile...effortless.. Just make it painless so that I can enjoy the process.
And Im also careful to include too many moving parts that can get sticky.
I was thinking that the case could be made from either stabilized wood, or a dense exotic, so.. for a short term storage it would essentially be air tight, with a smooth easy to clean surface... all rounded inside corners. And perhaps a lid with a seal made from a rubber/cork/silicone gasket material. Obviously having an air seal between the two herb chambers would be required. And perhaps little tiny "windows" where you could insert a tiny slip of paper with the strain name written on it.
I have this cooky idea to make sleeves for these cases made from my paper composite material.... and then paint the sleeves to look like VHS cases, with all those sweet 80's/90's graphics. Probably overboard, hahah.
I'll get some sketch photos up sometime, and do a little brainstormin!
