I disagree with every point you've made: The bowl will accept whatever amount I choose to place in it, and the design and function of the bowl dictates no such rule as you suggest; laying the unit on it's side will not prevent plant matter from mucking anything up, as it is generally held upright when in use, and is positioned upright when pocketed - if S&B rationalized the prone position as a way to keep the screen clean, I've got a golden bridge to sell; laying the unit down will hinder the cross-breeze cooling effect that this ribbed design intended, and the table on which the unit rests laid down will act as an insulator to the heat and thereby contain it within that minimal space; an arthritic hand such as mine can negotiate my upright cell-phone much less painfully than if it were laid down, requiring a more difficult and painful maneuver; the readability of the display may be comfortable enough for you at whatever level, but I generally read books, magazines, cell phone screens, and watch tv while these things are propped up - not laid down - focusing on these things while propped-up also enables a quicker/more accurate lock on the visual target; not everyone has two well-functioning hands, but a stand-up unit would be better appreciated by either one hand or two, IMO. The aforementioned are of course my subjective opinions based on what would work best for me, often guided by my own good common sense. Forum partisanship has nothing to do with any of this as far as I'm concerned. Though you say that "I will regard those as your subjective opinions that are not for me to refute.", you have attempted to do just that, as is your prerogative, such that I would not deny. With only 10 posts to your credit on this forum thus far, there will be much for you to learn and share, should you choose to stick around. I hope you do.The bowl is supposed to be packed full so that its loose enough to allow air flow but not loose enough to let the load shift around in the chamber due to gravity. Thus it should not matter if a full load it upright or not. Moreover, by laying it sideways one would prevent plant material from falling thru the bottom screen, and mucking up the heater, which would only help it stay cleaner and require less maintenance.
The device would also cool better laid down instead of upright, due to the phenomenon of heat rising--you might be familiar with it.
Also, any monkey could pick up the device laid flat, which is why the criticism that it's more difficult to pick up the handheld device if its not upright fails to hold water.
The readability of the display in a horizontal or vertical position is easy enough for me, because if the device is close enough to reach out my arm and pick it up, then I can clearly see the LED display.
As to your idea of "good common sense" or how many hands it takes to perform manual tasks, I will regard those as your subjective opinions that are not for me to refute.
I guess folks will form all sorts of opinions and in fact on this forum some significant partisanism arises just like people picking the professional sports team they want to support.
