Great news @catbird! I think the first 6 months is the hardest. Maybe you can start sourcing your wood and VVPS to help the time pass? That's what I've been doing. I can highly recommend @Snappo and @VoltageKeeper!

I'm almost at a full year on the list but I'm not expecting 'the email' until early next year.

@Alan How are things in the new workshop? Any new stem designs? How is the GTV concept coming along?

Yes, I am moving shortly, and not buying anything new unless it's necessary, but once settled I can dig into those things (I have a VVPS already, though). Yay that your time is coming up soon!

@Higher-than-a-pterodactyl - Glad to hear you are enjoying the new stem assembly. That is the one I use most often now. I enjoy the feel of the cork, but silicone will also work. Have also made one from wood. Will try to get a photo or two to post.

@KidFated. - Sorry again for the long wait. No worries of me getting sick of the inquiries. Will be happy to make a king ConG for you.

@hoyo77 - I enjoy creating HI’s too much to get tired of making them. Looking forward to turning the wood you sent me. Glad you like the looks of my latest wood stems. There will be plenty of wood remaining to make you some cool custom stems.

@darkadious - Thanks for posting the photos.

@exit - Thanks for posting the pics of your new HI, tubes, and stand. So nice getting to work with such wonderful wood blanks. Snappo finds some very nice wood blanks. Glad you are enjoying the micro roasting tube. Very cool that your Joda custom stem works with the HI. I have always suspected that they might work with the HI as they are designed for similar sized heater covers. You should also be able to use your wine cork tube with the nano. Roasting in the middle tube of the wine cork tube might work better for you as the nano can get hotter than the glass heater cover HI. They really work the best with the ss heater cover HI’s but have great flavor with the glass heater cover HI’s.
Glad to find your HI was still functional and only needed to have the glass heater cover support tightened. I removed the two screws holding the glass support plate and removed the entire heater cover assembly. The glass heater cover slides out of the support plate allowing the 6 support prongs to be bent back into position. They are designed to bend if too much force is placed on the glass protecting it from breaking. Happy to hear you are enjoying your silicone sleeves. High temperature medical grade is so much better than industrial grade. It also allows the screens to be held very firmly in place and provides such an nice tight seal.

@NickDlow - I have you on the list now. Thanks for your patience.

@Dafni - Glad you are enjoying your HI’s. They offer so much versatility.

@vapomancer - I finally have a girlfriend and have fallen a bit more behind. Should be at your name on the list shortly. Thanks for your patience.

@Vapinghole - Good to hear you are having great luck traveling with your HI. Happy roasting.

@VaPeD&CoNfUsEd - Good to see you making some custom stems for the HI. The glass I use for the heater covers are ~10mm. The ss heater covers are 3/8”. When I first devised the HI, I was only using fixed voltage power supplies so roasting temperature was controlled by position within the roasting tube. Much like a manual transmission whereas the VVPS is more like an automatic transmission. Having the heater cover slide all the way down into the roasting tube allows it to be used for installing the screens flat at the bottom. I hope you have good luck with the 15mm glass tubing. I have been considering trying some of it as well. Should make such a nice and heavy tube.

@u bwade wunner - Thanks for the post. Your HI’s are looking great. I have enjoyed advancing the design. Glad to have you join me in the adventure. Nice that you are enjoying the VK. They are amazing devices.

@Nugg - Things are going well in the new workshop. Found that I can make a wooden connector for my micro roasting tubes rather than using cork. Still need to try making a 10mm ID wine cork roasting tube from wood. The variations in glass size makes it difficult ensure a good fit every time. The GTV concept is fairly well complete. I just need to get some made now. Have been a little side tracked lately. People have been asking me to make an e-nail with a manual temperature control that can safely be left on 24/7 with a safety device to prevent accidental burns. I created a cage for an e-nail from the same material I use for the GTV. A dimmer switch is built into the wire cage assembly for manual temperature control. The power cord is detachable for safety and convenience. The cage can easily be grabbed at any point without getting burned since the cage dissipates heat so well. The nail has a 14mm and 18mm male connection so the entire cage sets down onto the glass adapter. The center of the nail is 1” away from the cage so it can fit onto most glass pieces. The cage is approximately 4.5” wide, 2” deep and 3.5” tall. The electrical portion of the cage is entirely enclosed. The titanium nail is removable for cleaning. Since it is so small and simple, the weight is not a concern for the glass.

It is safe and simple enough that almost anyone can now safely enjoy dabbing.

Hoping this new project won’t impact HI production too badly.

so i had a terrifying experience a little bit ago. my cat knocked my hi upside down into a glass of water :bang:

i immediately unplugged it and turned it upside down. checked it and it seemed fine almost completely dry no noises. i blew into the heater and made sure it was dry and let it sit. i just turned it back on and it heats up perfectly. the only noticeable change it that when heated it smells delightful the smell of the wood is strong just as when i received it.

@Alan should i be worried? this is incredible i cant believe it works. i was devastated thinking it had died :rip:

I think you should send your cat for an exchange or even a refund if possible. :D
If not possible then you should sign that cat for an ice bucket challenge (nice way to merge two of the most annoying things I've seen on internet) and make sure your HI watches it.

@exit - Thanks so much. Good to know things are going well.

@u bwade wunner - We are staying very Toasty. Lots of testing to be done.

@Rrose Selavy - Sorry to hear about the mishap. There should be no permanent damage. Any moisture that got into the wood will soon be heated away. The wood has pure beeswax soaked into the surface for a finish. More can be applied by heating the wood with a heat gun or hair dryer if the heat from the HI itself isn't enough. The HI is very simple and fairly durable. 12 volts is low enough that you don't need to worry about it shorting out from the water. 120 volts would be a different story.

Hi Alan,

I sent an email about this but perhaps it was missed. I have two PDs would most certainly like to have refurbished, as well as purchasing compatible roasting tubes for the new replacement elements.

Hope everything is well in HI land

@Alan I love the constant development on the HI. You're other project sounds pretty amazing too!! Will you be making multiple units? because I'd love to get on the waiting list for an e-nail made by you!

I will need to make multiple units to make it an economical project. I may also just make some protective cages that can be used for multiple e-nail brands. Always something on the drawing board.

@panasonic - Looking forward to refurbishing a PD or two. Have been practicing with some old Aromazap units that were totally charred out. One is even an old square pine Aromazap with an LED light. Will have to post some photos when I get them put back together.

oh boy i finally have my VK up and running, so excited to finally try out my HI :o

EDIT: i'm sorry guys because i have asked 10000 times but i am still confused by the WCT! do you guys usually fill it in the middle, or like a normal bowl, or both?

I recommend using the WCT w/o the end cork/glass tube for the glass heater cover HI's. It will allow the heater cover to get closer to the roasting material for higher roasting temperatures. You should also get good results using the WCT w/ the end cork/glass tube with higher voltages from the VK.
Happy testing.

99% of the time I use it without the end cork/glass tube. Load in the middle and manage the distance. I keep on the side the "end cork/glass" tube with a clean screen and when the other one is dirty I can take it off and use directly on top !

Hello all, this is my beautiful black walnut and lilac wood HI that I have had for about a year. I waited about a year for my HI as well. I bought it after my PD stopped working because of a break in the wire. It seems like my HI is experiencing the same problem. Sometimes it heats up and sometimes it doesn't. Attached is the picture when I remove the bottom from the HI. What can I do to fix it? Thanks

@abhs - Sorry to hear about your HI. Seems that the tiny copper strands within the cable tend to break the more that the cable is bent. The most stress always occurs at the power plug to cable connection. Probably a new power supply is in order. I am now providing an extension cord with a power supply purchase since it is cheaper to purchase a replacement extension cord than a power supply. Thanks for posting photos of your HI. The photo of the bottom shows the simplicity of the electrical wiring. The wires from the power socket are soldered directly to the heating element wires.

First thing to check would be your power supply. They seem to die for no reason.
I have seen many a power supply die for no apparent reason. However, what Master Alan has stated seems to typically be the cause. I recently found my fixed power supply no longer working (& my "backup" also dead). For a while I used the 'chinese mini VVPS', but those have NOT been kind to me. I've been thru more of them than I'd like to admit. :uhoh:
Voltage Keeper FTW; however it needs a PS to function. I happened to find a 12v PS, which was for an external HDD. Does this Power Supply sound acceptable for use with the HI (&/or VK)? It states on the label in fine print (below input & output) "For Information Technology Use Only". Any suggestions/input/comments?
output : 12v 1.5a

I hope my fellow jedHIs are staying Toasty & strengthening their bond with The Force. :spidey:  :peace:
