Looks like the GH is definitely a go at this point. Expectations are running pretty high all around and with good reason, these guys have made some pretty bold claims. Will it live up to the hype? Who knows, but the fact is when you look at the market for pen vapes that do herbs at this point in time, (atmos raw, white rhino dube and their clones just to name a few off the top of my head) even if the grasshopper performs half as well as advertised it will still blow away anything in the pen vape category right now. For me, and I think for a lot of people who have invested in this project, the main selling point of this vape is the form factor. The grasshopper might not be the ultimate connoisseur's vape, but if it can do a halfway decent job of vaping herb without combusting unlike the existing vapes of this form factor I'll be happy. Other's might not want to compromise taste and production for compact size but if that's the case this probably isn't the vape for you anyway. My :2c:

The thing is they claimed it can do ALL of this. Even if it worked and only did some of this, it would be a failure since it would take a bunch of lies to sell a "halfway decent" product. If this isn't absolutely amazing after all their claims, its a pile of junk IMO. From what they have hyped it up to be, this vape should make someone take a DBV or something and never use it again, because they have all that power, and true convection sitting in this little pen. I can't see them making that happen. If they do, I might just buy 2.

always bringing the positivity, are you?

can you please direct me to where they claim that their pen will be better than a desktop vape, i must have missed that...

They said it was "comparable" to a desktop. Not sure what desktops they have used, but a "Arizer Q Tower" was a point of reference. Could be EQ, which gives off very nice hits, and thick ones as a whip, or V Tower, which is also nice, but a tad bit more "airy" than an EQ.

I'm bringing skepticism that is warranted after claiming to do stuff that no one else in the portable market could do. If I made a vape and made wild claims, would you take me at face value despite having nothing to back any of my claims up at all? If thats the case just send me $1k now and I'll send you my vape that turns 1 gram of bud into 5 grams of hash oil after you use it.

I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just pointing out many reasons why I don't think this is going to live up to the claims they made. People are already settling saying "I hope its half as good as they say". If its half as good as they say you know what that really means? False advertising.

We've seen bold claims and interesting form factors before. Puffit anyone? I don't know a single person who was happy with that vape...but hey... they got the form factor down. Now they just need to make it work and deliver on its claims. Sounds eerily similar to me.

Right now this product hasn't proven anything to anyone, so I'm skeptical. All we have to go on are words from Matt (also calling himself Chris) who is selling the vape. Matt/Chris's Zenpen/Grasshopper simply has too many promises and no proof. Sorry to be Mr Negative, but the unfortunate truth is the odds of this failing in one way or another are simply higher than the odds that Matt/Chris has changed battery science for the whole world, and this portable vaporizer happens to be the only tech they decided to make use of it for.

If the 3d printing creates a heater that is long enough and somehow the air follows a long labyrinth or spiral path through it, theoretically it could indeed be very efficient in heating the air. I just can't see how will the manage to insulate the body as well as they claim.

The cera uses a design like this in its mouthpiece. Honestly the cera is the only vape to date, home or portable, that I can use without water filtration and feel no irritation at all. This has to be a combo of the awesome material and the 90 degree turns in the mouthpiece.

I'm more worried about them being able to generate the power than I am them trying to "contain" it.

I feel like this vape is honestly designed to take one quick hit, hope it doesn't burn, then repack a fresh load and repeat.

Well according to our calculations, if you were blasting on it as hard as possible and you could refill the chamber instantly, taking only 30 sec breaks between hits, it would last for between 5-6 Hrs.

For some reason that quote makes me feel like its one hit per bowl and then you load and repeat, but its not a clear enough statement to be sure.

Has anyone ever asked how many hits you get per bowl? Is Zenpen still even answering questions at this point, or does it no longer matter since the funding is basically complete?

actually.... if i am not mistaken @1_gr8_underdog and i THINK (not sure if i remember right) even @OF had some nice words for it. I was not one of the people who liked it so you can count my name in that side but i do remember people actually liking the PuffiT

This is perhaps the biggest warning flag on my end, as earlier in the thread they were showing up once every page or so to answer some questions. Their disappearance now that they are almost certainly going to make their goal sends a bizarre message.

Guilty, I kinda like the Puffit. Despite it's issues. I still drag mine out for a fun session or two from time to time. But then again, I like Vapman too, so how useful could my opinion be?

It's like MFLB, VG, Iolite and others IMO. Probably not a good recommendation as an 'only vape' (also a guy should always have some backup plan better than blazing) for most, but a useful and fun little gadget.

I'm not sure what to think about the "even OF....." part, but there it is.

Perhaps. Another view might be that they've finally got the resources to press on with actually making units rather than just talk about them? If I was a serious investor, I'd take it as a good sign?

As I mentioned earlier in the thread Conrad and Trevor from are on www.reddit.com/r/grasshoppervape and www.reddit.com/r/vaporents bascially everyday. You have a much better shot of getting an answer there. It's just a bigger, more lucrative audience then FC.

I perrsdonally havent asked becuase I don't see that as particularly valuable information. It all depends on what size of hits you're taking , I can get any where from ten to even 30 off of my DBV fully loaded. To many variables for me to care for an answer.

makes me feel like its one hit per bowl and then you load and repeat,

I don't understand how to get to that conclusion after they posted a video of them taking at least a dozen hits in a row over the course of about 2 minutes.

thx for the links fenton!

i had not read those posts yet, and understand darkrom's post better now... can't believe their claims myself either ;)

Hello

Sorry if you guys feel I've been absent, to be honest I'm not really sure how to respond to all the speculation and the sudden burst of negativity. If you look back through the thread, you'll see we've been doing our best to answer all your questions. As a result, many of the answers are already there. There is also information on our blog regarding development and announcements.

As we've mentioned, another video is on its way out, and will be done before the end of the indiegogo campaign! We're also working to get a unit into the hands of reviewers. Thank you for your patience.
The Grasshopper you see in my profile pic and in the videos is a functioning prototype. As with many prototypes, it is not perfect. Continuous testing and modifications to our prototypes have them in rough shape. When a user on the forum asks whether or not we can include a "stealth mode" where the LEDs do not light up, we take it apart and we try and figure out how it can be done. Any small improvement we can make that will enhance the experience, we will attempt to implement. So understandably we're not in a rush to show a reviewer our battered prototypes, we'd like to get our next batch ready and show those off. It isn't fair to the reviewer or to the Grasshopper to have it reviewed at the moment and asking them to try to ignore small deficiencies. (example: people have noticed the button is a bit sticky in the video, that tends to happen when you accidentally melt a little plastic part with your soldering iron!) We want them to experience it as a whole and at its best. Many crowdsourcing projects don't have functional prototypes yet, or even proof of concept! I don't know of any that have third party reviews. Few have as complete a prototype as ours. At this point we're not even trying to "sell" anyone a Grasshopper, this is not a pre-order, it is a crowdsourcing campaign.

So why support the campaign?

Because you want something better. Like us, you most likely feel that there isn't a single portable vape out there that combines an elegant form factor with high performance. From the videos we've already shown, you can see it has those two things.

How is it possible?

Well after studying thermodynamics, heat exchangers, fluid flow and materials science for 4 years we've learnt a few things about heating things up. Other vaporizer companies don't build their own computers to run heat flow simulations for days on end to optimize the design of their heating element or use 3d printing to create geometries that are otherwise impossible to manufacture. They don't use our insulation, a state of the art nano structured material that we manufacture in house. The manufacturers out there right now, to be honest, have been lazy. They could be doing a lot better, but they don't think there's a big enough market to warrant spending too much on R&D. We believe that the use of vaporizers is about to take off, and we want to be ready.

mod note: Comments lumping the competition into a ball of lazy and claiming that you know what they're thinking are not what we want to see on the forum. Please restrict your posts to your own product instead of disparaging the rest of the industry.

Well I'm definitely NOT interested in any products designed to do a "halfway decent job" ESPECIALLY products designed by aerospace engineers.

I was not sold on this vape as being a "Launch Box" killer and am expecting a DBV in a pen. My wants in a portable vaporizer are all features that have been implemented by the GH team, so I am not a lonely dreamer.

I'm also not going to pretend to be an internet scientist and try to break down every scenario this pen won't work in and why none of the features are technically possible blah blah blah. A few hundred years ago the Earth was flat. Considering our incredible advances in technology, I definitely see nothing impossible about making a working vape pen. Stranger things have happened.

At the end of the day, it's still the best portable pen design I've seen. February will tell if fruition lives up to the idea.

I'm gonna go grind one up and hope so.

Over the falls, in a barrel

Indeed, Trevor has answered every one of my questions that I've posed in /r/grasshoppervape. I'm impressed with the responsiveness. Most recently I got an interesting answer to a question I'd first posed here yesterday:

Given how hot the heat exchanger needs to be in order to function, I'm curious whether the loading chamber is insulated from that conductive heat at the back. Can the pen be used with the back-end pointing toward the ground, or will the resultant direct contact of the herbs with the back lead to uneven heating or even combustion?
Trevor said:
The heat exchanger is not actually any hotter than the air coming out of it. It's designed to have a long air path for that exact reason.

If it was designed to get really hot, and you pulled air slowly through it, that air would end up being way too hot then burn your herbs. This is why we spent a lot of time making sure we didn't need to have the exchanger be really really hot like a lot of other vaporizers. This is the exact reason why most pen vapes just don't work and combust your material.

The Grasshopper can absolutely be used with the back facing the ground. The herbs can contact the exchanger directly without risk of burning or uneven heating because everything is all the same temperature.

Hope this helps answer your question.
I didn't think that was possible. And I know that the "hot heat exchanger, slow pull" thing isn't true, because it's very hard to combust in the Cera. But, I guess this could all conceivably be the difference created by the long path through the heat exchanger.
