Hey Everyone,
We are here with the mid-October update. The project has been moving smoothly over the last 15 days. Our attention has remained on the manufacturing and testing of several assemblies. As some larger shipments come in, we’ve also been working through the extensive bureaucracy of importing.
As our parts move through the manufacturing process, we’re working to test those that have arrived for longevity and durability. This means ensuring that everything is standing up to the demands of a wide service temperature range and the expansion and contraction that goes with it. Creating, managing and containing the heat within the Grasshopper’s small metal body has been the single biggest design challenge. The results so far are good.
We’ve made one small adjustment to outer ring that holds the Back End together. This ring is the final part of the Back End assembly, and snaps over the clip and dial to hold everything together. Originally, it was machined from 410 Stainless Steel and then heat-treated to give it a spring temper. The spring temper is required to allow the ring to stretch open and return to its original shape after installation. Unfortunately, the heat treatment process caused too much deformation to the ring. To fix this problem, we’ve decided to use Stainless Steel 17-4, which is a specialized alloy that will be strong enough to make heat treatment unnecessary. Stainless 17-4 is widely used in airliner landing gear and other high-stress applications, where the metal needs to flex but not permanently deform.
As we bring in some larger shipments, we’ve had to learn the ins and outs of the import process. This process is much different than the normal shipping process. It involves brokers, ISF forms, container loading and unloading fees, inspections, and customs taxes. The bulk of our packaging arrived by cargo ship earlier this month, and the rest of the Hopper parts will be be arriving by air. We’re using express air shipping on all Grasshopper parts to cut out the extra 15 to 20 days required when shipping by sea.

So far we’re looking good for December, and we’ll be back with another update on November 1st.
