Welcome to the forum Nuphile, and glad you're happy with your SSV. Very good description of the benefits of the standard connection. IMO, it's the biggest functional difference between the SSV and DBV, since the latter is GG, hands free only. The SSV w/standard provides a slightly different vaping experience from the DBV, and personally, I don't see much point in buying the SSV with GG setup only. From a hit standpoint, you're paying more $ for the same vaping experience. If the different whip/wand angle, and/or looks, is also very important, and you have the exta $ to spare, I can see going with SSV and GG, but otherwise, why pay extra $, even above the standard price, for an SSV that mimics the cheaper DBV?

Kudos to Vapeworld for selling the HF version of the SSV for standard price, but why they assume that everyone wants HF is beyond me. As it is, you have to special order the standard SSV. They should have a selection box for connection type, just like 7th Floor's site does.

I have not tried the spherical connection, so I can't comment on that. But, I would love to see some reviews if anyone has tried it.
I haven't seen anyone comment on this new setup either. Judging by the few pics on their site, it looks to be a cross between standard and HF, offering movement of the wand, but with a larger opening on the heater cover than standard. I'm not sure there's much of a difference, hit wise, vs. the HF setup. It may be more gimmick than anything. I'm not sure I'm ready to pay $45 plus shipping to find out.

I wonder if over time some oils will get into the ground glass area of the spherical joint. If your going to be moving it around to get different angles the way it is designed... some of that spherical outer part is going to get exposed to the vapor stream and collect some build up.
with the HF ground glass set up the ground glass areas stay out of the vapor path. With the spherical it is possible to partially block the path with the wand, unless your holding it perfectly aimed straight on with the joint. I think the spherical joint would need a more frequent cleaning.

Thanks for the welcome max!
I figured I should post some pics as well. I purchased this directly from 7th Floor. The company said it would take much longer to get my vape if I decided to customize the heater cover and knob. So, I just let them do it for me. They did a fantastic job! The colors are awesome!
Also, I went with the metal base because I figured it would be more durable than the plastic.
Enjoy the pics!
I would like to apologize for the pipe in the background. I know this is the fuck combustion forum. But, I am happy to say I haven't used that thing at all since I got my SSV.
Also, in the second pic, I set the knob to that position for visual effect. I don't vape with the knob at 10:00. I found that about 12:30 is perfect for this one.

Nuphile,
Gorgeous, Nuphile! I'm glad you like your surfer. I find that 12:30 to about 3:30 is my preferred range. I pretty much turn it completely chocolate brown, and I think I get most of what I can out of my green without combusting. I don't want to go any higher in temp, because I am afraid of starting a bonfire in my wand.
Have a blast with your new gadget, and welcome to the forum. There are a lot of smart folks around here, and one day I might be one of 'em...lol...

Nice shots, it looks like the SSV logo is etched in rather than painted on the body- I thought they were all painted now.

When I first started using it, I had it at about 2:00, and the herb combusted. I turned it down, little by little, and found 12:30 to be perfect. The herb turns brown, but not very dark. I think the main problem is just drawing too slow. I could probably turn it up a bit and draw faster. It's still taking a little more time to learn.
Thanks for the advice, and I will definitely ask questions as they come up; I'm sure they will.

It looks like the powder coated ones may have the logo painted on; I can't tell. But this one is definitely etched in.

I thought id show off a little mod my dad did to his DBV. The light to display that it is on is in the rear so he relocated it to the front, after a few bowls the concept of on/off gets fuzzy he said ;)

Hi there everyone!

Been reading the forum for about a week or two now and let me first just say thank you all so much for being incredibly helpful and informative! I made the decision to buy my first vaporizer a few weeks ago, and the choice is pretty mind-boggling at first, but by doing hours and hours of reading on here and other places I've finally decided to go for an SSV.
Most people in the UK have only really heard of the Volcano vaporizer, mainly due to it being the most common one in Amsterdam coffee-shops I would imagine, and so discovering so many different types was quite a suprise! I was at first leaning towards buying the Extreme Q, but coming from a very chronic smoking background (around 15 spliffs a day) and a love of the 'big-hits' my research has shown me that the SSV is probably the wiser choice in this regard.

I fully understand there's no 'best vaporizer', and each one has their own specific pros and cons, but as I said the SSV seems to be the one that will suit my immediate needs most effectively. Of course I plan to extend my collection to include many others when funds allow!

I'd reached the point in my smoking where it would literally take almost a 1/4 oz in one sitting to get genuinely, properly stoned, and realised that that was pretty ridiculous. So I'm on the final 3 weeks of a 2 month tolerance break (starting again on 4/20!), and having seen the nasty shit that my lungs have been coughing up since I stopped, decided that a vape is definitely the intelligent and connoisseur's way to continue to enjoy our favourite hobby!

Going to order from Vapeworld as soon as their chat comes online this afternoon, so that I can ensure I order the standard connection instead of the GG. Also going for the black rainbow silver, although that red one looks pretty tasty too!

I was just wondering: Is it worth buying extra screens/tubes now too? How often do you usually have to clean the various parts? And should you only use still slightly green (as opposed to fully brown) ABV in making cannabutter etc.?

Sorry for such a long post, I just wanted to really express my gratitude for such a useful resource.

Thanks again, and looking forward to contributing as I enter this wonderful new side to the heavenly herb! :)

First off let me congratulate you on making it a whole 2 months! Thats unbelievable and for me, slightly inconceivable. I have had my SSV for about 3 weeks and my life has dramatically improved. Good plan on the standard connection, I originally wanted hands free but went with the advice from this forum and although it makes watching a movie or TV more difficult, you really get the most out of your hits being able to turn and stir the herb. Regarding your question about the screens/tubes, I personally dont think you will need extra tubing unless you need a longer one. I ended up buying 10 extra screens just to have on hand, I think they are good to have on hand if you dont clean regularly. I dont recommend cleaning your glass until its so dirty you cant see through it, using one the methods mentioned in this thread: http://fuckcombustion.com/viewtopic.php?id=975 Aside from the health benefits this is my favorite part about vaping, its recycling at its finest. Unfortunately I cannot comment on your question about the ABV/Cannabutter as I have not yet made any, I have about 16 g saved up preparing to use if for 420, but I generally vape until its light brown. Good choice with Vapeworld, I recently bought my 2nd Iolite there and they have great service, dont forget to use the FC-2010 coupon to save 12%.

Thanks mate. Actually I've found the break hasn't been difficult in the slightest, even after over 10 years of solid stoning, and only on day 2 had a few hours of nervousness. I'd had a few breaks before and had always read that MJ isn't physically addictive like most other narcotics, and as long as you have a strong mind and will-power, it's no problem at all, and one of the countless great things about this beautiful herb! I still sit with mates when they partake, and even roll up for them occassionally, as the smell is still lovely, but once you know you're in control of your own mind you're fine with it.

Sorry to get off-topic, but to return to it: Spoke to Chris at Vapeworld earlier, and he's very kindly agreed to modify an SSV to the standard fitting for me, as well as throw in a few spare screens! Apparently they don't make the black rainbow edition in European 220 volts, but he said buying a decent converter will still make it work fine, can anyone confirm this please?

Should arrive in 10-14 days, providing customs doesn't fanny around with it for too long. Can't wait to start testing it out! With the 'aromatherapy sample' they provide, can you use that without the aroma-top? If so how..? So sorry about all the questions, as you can tell I'm a massive noob to all of this...

Cool mod! I left the picture out of this reply to save space, but here I go wasting more space to explain myself... it's not like the internet is infinite, gotta be angry host servers someplace... Maybe I will make my own lazy man's version of this mod by adding a stick with a small mirror so the light can be seen from the operator's side...

Anyway, the VapeWorld store (just spoke with them, they are great, albeit 7th Floor's backordered status on black DBVs, which VapeWorld has no control over- Chris is awesome over there!) gives 12% off with the FC-2010 discount code. I'm waiting on my 2nd order from them, they have free accessories with vape purchases that seemed better than similar "bonus offers" on other sites, free shipping, paypal and 12% off... Helpful by phone and email, too.

Here's the Hands Free breakdown between the models:

-DBV: Hands Free
-Standard SSV: HF Possible with accessory that slides down from top
-SSV From VapeWorld: HF ground glass heater cover and wand come standard for the same price as other places charge for the standard model. It's a $30 upgrade on SSV's website. If you call, Vapeworld can switch it to the standard non-HF SSV style heater cover and wand.

I was in a similar place. I, too, have a water device to use. I like the non-HF of the SSV for vaping and the possibility of it for water pipe, but had to go with $172 for the DBV over $250 for a SSV + HF accessory. The SSV does look a lot cooler and for non-HF use, the angle is cool. Other than that, they are mostly the same save for accessories (better looking bag with SSV, SSV whip wand has a little color to it).

The SSV has a smaller opening in the heater cover, so a thinner stream of heat goes to the wand. Thus, non-HF and some spinning/moving of the wand while using. The DBV (and I'm pretty sure the "upgrade" SSV HF) wands use ground glass connections to "lock" into a heater cover with a larger opening. I've read that the non-HF can produce slightly milkier/thicker vapor than the HF SSV or DBV methods, though not dramatically. People report that the HF wand/heater cover does vape wand contents evenly and completely without twisting and the difference is not extreme.

Also, to use the SSV with the handsfree accessory might not be as good as the DBV or SSV HF "upgrade" set because you are still using the smaller stream of heat to the wand with no moving of the wand to distribute it evenly...

I suppose there are no rules that say you need hands free to use a water pipe, either. Though it seems like it would be easier with HF, I could see it working pretty well once you got the hang of it.

Maybe some day I'll gift the DBV or just impulsively add an SSV to the stable, one for the living room and one for the music room- might benefit from HF more in the music room! I am awaiting my DBV at the moment with bated/MFLB-ed (MFLBated?) breath...

Also been loving my MFLB! HTH!

I have a quick question about the SSV...

After you turn it on and let it heat for about 5 minutes, since it's not hands-free, do you need to hold your wand up to the ceramic heater for about a minute to let it heat the herb up before you inhale? Or do you just hold it up to the heater and start inhaling immediately? Or does it not matter? :uhoh:

Just trying to get a technique down.

No need to hold the wand there, it isn't until you move air through the herb by inhaling that heat via convection is able to really raise the temperature throughout the bowl to vaporize the THC.

Another note my ssv is good to go after about 30 seconds on high.

wilf789 I routinely make ABV brownies with darker brown colored ABV. It doesn't need to be nice and green to still get a kick out of it.

Hi all,

I am new to this forum in the sense of posting but have been on it a few times before to research vapes and hear opinions (I hope Im not what you would call a lurker!) Anyway I'll try not to be anymore. I was vaping away on my SSV when the ground glass got stuck so I started searching forums & reading & got it out by gently nudging it inwards & outwards rather than trying to untwist it out. I hope this helps someone!

Also to Wilf above, it may be too late if you've already ordered yours but I got a 220v ground glass Rainbow SSV from UK next day! I bought it from ebay seller goodgets_uk and apparently they are the same as vaporlot.com. It cost me 180 + 40 (for rainbow & gg) & was delivered next day!! They have really good reviews & I have had a very good experience with 2 purchases with them (SSV & LBV). Apparently they have all colours in stock.

I mention them because you say Rainbow wasn't available in 220v, & also because after reading so much from this forum it would be only right to show gratitude by helping others or making them aware in return, and also the fact that these sellers really are good & quick! Both times I received my stuff the very next day, progress updates and polite helpful communication and up until now I can't fault them.

The SSV itself is class!:o Mine is just too hot a colour & if I ever get a chance Ill take some pics 1 day & show you lot, Rainbow sparkle, with a red base & colour coded dial! The heater cover colour design on mine looks like a fried egg but the whole thing just looks hot!

Looks is not it, the thing is quality & hits hard! One thing I am curious about though if anybody can answer please. The temperature dial. I dont seem to need to turn it up at all. I switch the thing on, turn the dial up like over half way, wait a few mins, then turn it down to bare minimum (just above the on click) and that is the right setting to vape at. If i leave it any higher I feel the efficiency or vaping time decrease and bad taste comes sooner. I am vaping flavoured tobacco & shisha tobacco but have also tried other herbs and mollasses and everything seems to be the same and best left on minimum setting. Any thoughts?

Right now I am vaked & think I am gibbering on too & its late so take care all!

Well yeah that's what a lurker is, and lurkers are fine (hi to all the lurkers out there :D ). There will always be many more lurkers than contributors here (as with other publicly viewable forums) - and it's not like being a stalker. ;) As long as the knowledge is being spread out there, it's all good, imo. But of course becoming a member and joining in the discussion is even better.

Thanks for the tip mate, but yeah I had already ordered though. Checked them out and the seller looks pretty good so for future purchases in the UK they look like the way to go. Having said that, it did actually work out cheaper buying from vapeworld with the FC discount, although I suppose you have to buy a volt converter too.

My SSV should be here in about 10 days, but I still won't be able to use it until 4/20 under the rules of my tolerance break. Having it just sitting there might well kill me with temptation I think!

Sure. That'll give you the voltage you need.

That seems to be inaccurate info. You can go to 7th Floor's site and configure that color with the 220 option. It goes into the shopping cart with no complaint. No discount there though, and your savings should easily cover the cost of a step up converter.

Thanks, will get a converter soon then. Ah sorry for the inaccurate info, that was just what the guy at Vapeworld said. Perhaps he meant that they just don't stock the 220v versions instead. Doesn't really matter though if the converter works fine, I just can't wait to start vaping whatever the voltage! News of the purchase has spread quickly and I've got mates queuing up already all wanting to sample this beauty.

Just sold my DBV and ordered a blackrainbow SSV through vapeworld for $254 grand total. I called to make sure they could include the standard wand/heatercover and the guy i talked to was very quick and helpful and assured me he'd make sure my SSV doesnt come w/ the ground glass connector. I still don't get why thats the new default for SSV on vapeworld, because no SSV user i've talked to has preferred it, and the ground glass "hands-free" of the DBV is unreliable enough at the angle it sits at, i can't imagine how easily it would come out at the SSVs downward angle. The spherical stuff looks.. interesting but honestly not all that appealing or necessary. I'm pretty sure I'll be investing in a fatty bowl and hands-free wand holder thing in the near future though for parties

I'm sure you'll see me around this thread after it gets here next week. I can definitely say that my LB will be getting a lot of use this weekend since it will be my only vape until this ssv gets here lol

Hey guys! Mike here from The BIG APPLE! New to the forum and very glad to say after doing my research and thanks to all the helpful info from everyone on the forum, I am on my way to becoming a SSV owner!!!! Just order yesterday and sooo excited for it to get into my hands already! Any helpful tips for firstimers?

Stoned_Inca,
Hello Stoned_Inca! Welcome, and great choice on the SSV. I usually only get mine out when friends are over, but every time that I do, I wish I got it out more often. It is a beast of a hitter.
My advice would be to read this thread, and check out some of tokinglx's videos. Just do a google video search for his one gram challenge. Also, be sure to save your wand-hash! Amazing stuff.
