Another big fan of the VaporBrothers Mini Wand here!
SSV + standard HC + VB mini wand = Efficient extraction, great taste, good vapor
Changing the screen... very frustrating. Called VaporWarehouse for advice. They were extremely helpful with technique and tips. Without me asking they even sent several packs of free screens. I was unable to successfully change a screen without kinking or otherwise destroying it going in. Fortunately I have many spare VB mini wands. They used to sell a box of ten wand/whip/mouthpiece for $50. I was paranoid about breaking them so I stocked up. They are tougher than they look. I have only broken one in four years (dropped on tile floor).
There are some gifted people out there that are able to do it successfully. Who knows... some of you may be one. Fortunately, as Uncle Vito says, there is no need to ever remove the screen. This is a great product sold by a great retailer. The mini wand is very inexpensive, just buy extras.
They are not as fragile as they look and feel. Compared to 7th Floor's beautiful wands they are thin and light. They are well made, lab quality borosilicate glass.
I follow Uncle Vito's cleaning technique (sort of). Put the wand with screen intact in ziplock baggy, just enough ISO to cover wand. Soak and shake till clean. Rinse with hot water. Suck out moisture with vacuum cleaner.
A couple pages back someone commented that their wand plugged up after only a few uses. I've gone as long as seven months of daily use without cleaning my wand. My average is around three months between wand cleanings and my screen stays clear. After a while it does start to plug on the underside of the screen, starting from the outside edges. This buildup on the underside is like stalactites hanging from the screen. Since this happens to vaporizer wand screens I would like to call them... StalacHIGHts. ;-).
My little 5 step routine to keep screen clear:
After every finished load...
1) Blow on mouthpiece to expel as much loose spent herb as possible.
(Note about blowing into mouthpiece/whip/wand - always take two good draws on empty wand after blowing onto it. Moisture inside will only cause problems. Some people say never blow out your wand, but if you suck out the moisture after each blow you should be good.)
2) Turn up SSV heat to 3:00 (glowing heater), take long slow draw moving wand to heat all of screen's surface.
(It won't combust because there's no herb, just pure sweet oil on screen. You'll get a nice hit off the screen.)
3) Hold wand upside down, brush off screen from the bottom (top of screen facing down).
Use a natural fiber art brush. I prefer an angle cut one fourth inch natural fiber brush.
(Natural fiber works best for already vaped herb, synthetic fiber brush works best for fresh ground herb)
4) Blow out again. Suck two fresh air draws again to remove moisture.
5) Use pick to remove any remaining bits.
A couple minutes doing this simple procedure after every load will let you go a long time before having to clean your wand.
P.S. - Thank you all for so much invaluable information. I chose the SSV from information gathered here. I went with the standard heater cover from advice here. I learned about the VB mini wand here. From tips on technique to maintenance, it's all here. This site has far more useful and accurate information than any other cannabis or vaporizer web sites I've found. Also the demeanor, maturity and conduct are of a MUCH higher standard here. A special thanks to Vitolo. For my needs, your advise and recommendations have been especially helpful. Thank you Uncle Vito (hmmm... Professor Vito?).
