Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

I still haven't made it myself, but I got to try some rosin a buddy made - Flavor for days and nicely potent :)

Really impressive stuff, regardless of how it was produced.

The fact that this is such a relatively simple extraction method just makes it more amazing :)

@darkrom, it may have simply been an increase in quantity because I could see and more easily retrieve the rosin from a slick pad... but I think there was enough of diffrence in how the heat was transferred and dissipated from the parchment vs slick pad that it made it easier for me to achieve a yield.

since this is all simply a heat sublimation process by which we are basically chasing the rosin away from the plant material via heat the slick pad produces a buffer both from getting to hot and too cold too quick.

am I gonna say this is my idea? no.
I got the idea from @Quetzalcoatl and others from instagram who are obviously getting a decent yield and seemed to be using slick pads in conjunction with parchment... I just decided to remove the parchment since its not really needed with a platinum cured silicone pad there.

as far as heat effecting the "type" of buzz... yes it could... you can [as I have] seperate out different runs... there may or may not be a "headstate" different between them if you use diffrent temp to retrieve the rosin... or they could all be nearly the same if you stuck with a single temp.

you could decarb by overpressing it and lose some thc to cbn and get more of a cbd cbn heavy concentration... shit, some may desire this.

These tortilla/flatbread makers look promising:

LavoHome Stainless Steel Tortilla Flat Bread Maker - Non Stick 8" Cooking Surface, 35.79

CucinaPro 1443 Flatbread and Tortilla Maker, $65.99

Edit: Oh, hey. My 1,000th post and it's about tortilla makers. Thanks, FC.
What kind of control do these have? I like the leverage handle. That means it is MADE to push flat with some decent pressure. This looks like a winner to me. Maybe I can control the temp with my BBQ Guru.
I went to BB&B today looking for a hair iron. There were none.:hmm: Curling irons of every variety. Blow dryers, every other type of hair gizmo. NO straightening irons. Then went looking at sandwich presses.
I saw one promising unit with flat plates that pivot and meet flat to each other. Only problem, 3 temp settings. No idea of temp.

@farscaper, do you preheat the slick pads before pressing? If not, have you tried? It seems like that would help, unless the slower heat is actually helping with the extraction…
I add 2 or 3 seconds to the heating time.
you could try to pre heat them... I dont know if that would really anything at all... might speed the process just a bit. but not much...

edit: just thinking... I guess in a way I am pre squishing these buds cause they are flattened before they reach extraction temp...

@DieHard that has been my problem with getting a flatbread press is they have shitty heating control. you may be spot on rigging up a temp setup... but if you had to buy one.... makes a tshirt press kinda tempting.

I've been looking at the tortilla makers more, and I'm almost ready to buy one but I'm not sure. All of them have at least one review mentioning that it doesn't get hot enough for them to make roti. The Cucina Pro has a review mentioning that it is remarkably sturdy, but again puts out a little less heat than preferred. Another had a review mentioning that the bottom plate gets hotter than the top plate. I figure that's enough to put it out of contention?

I don't know how hot a roti maker needs to be? :hmm:

Just read the whole thread in one sitting. Damn I miss you guys!
I'm in...this looks so damn easy...I like the tortilla press. I used to have a panini press...can't remember if I still have it..will check in the morning. I WILL try this method for sure.
A question...if your buds are too dry, what can you do to add some "humidity" to them?

Guys, join this group if you're on facebook. It's incredibly helpful as Soilgrown, Church, and a ton of others have been sharing their experiences. Lots of detailed info that is constantly developing, straight from the founders of this technique (flower rosin).

Here was my second attempt at it. I'll try and detail my process tomorrow. I need to pass out.

Alright, I've got some gear in the mail. Should all get here in about a week.

I ordered an Conair Infiniti hair straightener, a Cucina Pro tortilla maker, that Proctor-Silex sandwich maker, and a few slick pads.

The Infiniti seems like a solid buy and probably the best choice for small amounts.
The tortilla maker I'll return if it doesn't get hot enough or heats unevenly…
The sandwich maker I might just keep either way. This thread has worked up an appetite for paninis in me.

I'll let y'all know…

im working on the moisture issue. I have some purps that seem like they are frosty enough... but they are crispy dry and dont really rosin at all... which is sad cause im really looking forward go it....

my smoking buddy like to toss a qtip tip soaked in water in his bags cause he says it makes it smoke longer and what not.

there are also humidity eggs you can freeze as well as bodiva packs you can store with your material.

im gonna test some diffrent moisture contents today.

Back in the day I used to use the thick white part of lettuce to rehydrate some dry crispy bud. If it was particularly nasty I would use orange peel. A small piece in the bag over nite usually did the trick.

Me too - used to use deeply shaved orange peels (to get some of the juicy white part, but not down to the orange itself) - about 6 strips per 1/2 zip or so.

I use the Bovida 62s when jar curing, but had never considered trying them in a case like this. I'll give it a whirl next time I need it.

Peace!

I cant tell if were extracting or making sandwiches in this thread some times...

either way..:mmmm:
Ha! Yes.

Simple homemade RSO guy, so where do you think my setup is...?

My fondue pot for oil baths is out regularly on the counter (cleaned of course) and people have commented that we must be BIG fondue lovers...

Thanks for this thread, by the way. I am a John Barleycorn lover, but always open to finding a solventless technique. I am watching with great interest!

But it IS looking like I have to move the operation from the kitchen to the laundry room...?

;)

Peace!

I have a vacuum pump for marshmallow deflation

I have a vacuum pump for marshmallow deflation

See? You folks have it DOWN.

Might want to pick your brain on that, will find a post by you on an appropriate thread (your posts are great btw).

But I admit, it was this thread that had my favorite words "Easy" and "DIY". My dirty little secret is...

I have only used RSO sublingually and vaping with a mix. Sigh. Almost 50, and I haven't tried a concentrate other than that YET (I mean Ac. Gold. hash growing up, etc. that was friggin awesome).

So I figured going to concentrates was going to require a marshmallow deflator extraordinaire, along with some helicopter wings... But then I started watching you folks here.

In my defense, I am committed to the next step - I had @2clicker design and price me an awesome rig to use for the results of this technique. (Don't know if it's the right lingo, but it's a "mod" and "RDA" setup) I'm pumped - I ordered it and it's on the way.

The other piece(s) I already have - I have been working with a white widow and will be for the next few months. And it is very, VERY rosiny! A nice strain for this technique, I think. (Admittedly, I also found that for resin production, stress during the last two weeks of their lives makes "nice" girls into FrankenWidows! :freak: )

Peace and good things!

@CrazyDiamond I wouldnt go hydrating my buds just yet, although I had some good results from some higher RH material I have had the best success with well cured material. so you may wanna try the tech before to see how they preform pre hydration.

on another note... I need more pressure! if I could get this iron in and out of a vice in like 3 seconds id be golden... but alas I cannot... if you overpress [time wise] you will see decreased yield. ive actually gotten great results from both parchment and slick sheets.... its just a time technique variable you have to work out. but short compressions with lots of pressure work best.

on the topic of pre squishing... I had been reading and found a suggestion to basically roll your nug in a ball like and pre squish it ... low and behold this tech did help. by pre compressing you remove all the possible porous areas for oil to soak into...

its all a work in progress for me... I know others have a tech down that they use...
it does become tiresome squishing on a hair iron though... so bigger bigger bigger bigger better!
