Mine isn't that fine, and it's labeled muslin bandage. It's fine enough though.

Nobody nowhere around herehad heard about cheescloth. I think there are some geographical differences.

I think I have something similar to what @herbivore21 describes here, coz it´s working damn well and very little gets stuck. I throw the flat hash piece, cloth and all, into the moonshine after it's been pressed sufficiently.

Looking for your recommended hair straightener links. Toughest, cheapest, lowest temps.. 1"? 1.5"? 2"? What are you using?

The one I hacked was a Loof brand 1.5" digital 122-450f but the ebay is out of stock and I can not seem to find another one anywhere.

Edit: found it on dhgate but they want $56 each.

I'm finding they are plentiful and cheap at thrift stores. The first place I looked had 4 units for sale, $4 each. I ended up grabbing 2 of them, both 2". I immediately broke one lol, the power connector took some damage when I tried to take it apart, but it was the cheaper looking of the two. The other is a Remington Wet2Straight and seems to be a good unit. May be older since a search didn't find the same units for sale, but the new ones look close except mine has a digital (1-30) display and they sell for $50ish so $4 well spent IMO.

one thing to consider in reducing the overall temperature is ensuring that the thermocouple is located at the highest point, either on the top blade if you are pressing horizontal, or above the heating element if pressing vertically.

I found my unit when set on low, reached 298°, and dropped to about 260° before heating up again. Seems really hot but it's working really well and not leaving my product roasted smelling at all. probably helps that i use multiple layers of parchment. tastiest oil i've ever had in my life.

It seems we are working with PTC heating elements.

"Electric heaters using PTC chips do not use resistance wire as a source of heat. Instead, they use a number of ceramic PTC chips as the heating source. PTC is an acronym for Positive Temperature Coefficient, meaning that when the chip temperature increases, its electrical resistance value also increases resulting in decreased heat output. This resistance change is not linear"

So I picked up one of these clamps today

Works pretty well. I had a dismal strain that gave .05 from 2 .25 nugs just pressing the iron with my body weight, tried again same same except with the clamp and got .07. Turned shit into meh, I'll take it lol. They come in many sizes and strengths, I got the shortest for practicality, and in this size you can get 100, 300, or 600 lbs clamping force. I went with 300, kinda regret it but my thinking was mainly proof of concept and IDK how much actual force I can apply by hand. It was only about $15, so if I want a stronger/better one I'll make sure it has metal or high temp clamp pads. I melted mine a little with the bare plates , they do get very hot on the back ;)

Squoosh your gunked up muslin rosin style without any hash in it to get the residual good stuff out onto your teflon/parchment my friend :)

I use muslin sheet which is probably finer still than the bandage your are using. Mine is more like a cheesecloth in terms of how fine the weave is. It could well be the same exact material as a cheesecloth.

I just wired 2 plates parallel into a digital temperature controller out of an old easy ez vape and it worked fine except one of my plates is marked 18.9 and the other is marked 17.3 and there is a 30f difference between the two. This DTC pulses the power at different frequencies instead adjusting voltage like a dimmer would. I might go buy a dimmer but I can't see why it would not work, also.

There is such a fine line between getting oil and pulverization of everything. I think I may go redesign my leverage type hand press again if I can not get this hydraulic press tamed down with a bleeder type adjuster valve somehow.:shrug:

EDIT: I see Dnail's second round of pre-orders is up for $400 now So tempted. Wonder if I can get their Enail to plug into one of those controllers.

They're scammers, I'd avoid them. D-Nail is trying to get them shut down after they found out that they stole and photoshopped their pictures (that's their heat-press in the link) as well as others on the site.

I can also confirm that the products you guys are referring to are fraudulent, doctored images from D-nail originals. Allegedly the individuals responsible for the fraudulent listings are Americans - not Chinese!

Also D-nail buy existing t-shirt presses from China and put in their own controllers for both plates.

They do not retain the Chinese electronics, but rather the mechanical press side of things and the plates are retained (I am unsure about whether they use the original wiring for the one plate which was already heated, but I doubt it. I can speak with the man who designed the modifications to confirm this though next time I am in touch with D-nail people).

Further to this, remember that the price that these presses are offered at really is not a hell of a lot more than the original t-shirt press, I recall the original costing a couple hundred or something anyway ;)

I've also yet to see any other good purpose-made home presses (not to say that there won't be loads of them inevitably cropping up eventually!).

There are some potentially better presses that I have seen available, but these are large commercial presses, designed to press major weight and seriously not products that lend themselves to shipping or personal home use.

At the moment, if you want a purpose built rosin press, d-nail are really it. If you want to jerry-rig, by all means (and who knows, somebody could make a breakthrough in the process!), but don't be surprised if you spend the same kinda money to get the good results as the d-nail press would have got you!

I pulled the trigger on the 5x5 Dnail press last Friday. :) I hope it works as good as my hair iron.

I want accurate/even temps with adjustable/repeatable pressures and this seems like the way to go for me.

Edit: @HellsWindStaff . I would start asking random hotties for help with a sister gift, in identifying lowest temp irons, as its not something they seem to advertise well. The three Remington's I have tried only go down to 300f+ so I'd look at other brands.

Edit 2: Tell her you are looking for something that can really take a pounding under heavy heat and hard pressure for hour and hours on end. :rofl:
