Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

@Hackerman (and anyone else who cares to share) - I like the DapPress plate/pid packs for $200 - $300. I see that their basic hydraulic press kit for $500 is a little 6-ton jack. I'm under the impression that you want at least 15-20 tons and up for proper pressing, no?

So, I figure that a DabPress Plate/PID Controller kit with a Harbor Freight 20-ton press for less than $200 would be a good idea...or am I just overdoing it for personal use?
(also on a small budget, so trying to moderate cost, but I don't want to half-ass it and end up just needing to buy something bigger later)

My opinion does not blend with popular opinion very well so take it with how ever many grains of salt you wish but ....... unless you are pressing large quantities for commercial use, a 4 ton jack will do anything you need. I don't feel all that extra pressure is needed.

My Harbor Freight press is the 12 ton floor model. I had the bench A-frame model with 4 ton press but the 3x7 plates didn't fit real well so I went with the bigger press. However, I never crank it all the way down.

More pressure just never seemed to result in more yield for me. Just some plant waxes and debris.

Again, that's just my opinion. You mileage may very.

At 5-8g per squish, using bottle tech so my pucks are about a 2” diameter when done, so even with just a 2 ton press I would achieve greater than 1000psi. I tend to press at about 1.25-1.5 tons and I’m getting 25-30% yields consistently (depending on batch ... the current batch of ghost train haze I have I get consistently >30%)

The important thing is PSI which is measured in relation to the size of the end pressed material.

Ie. 6 tons is likely lots unless you are pressing a lot at a time.

Edit: make sure to get a press with a pressure gauge!

How big of a puck are you typically pressing?

I pressed some one gram loads a few days ago.

Last month I pressed a bunch of 4 gram double loads.

I guess it varies with what I'm doing. I was making a bunch of edibles from rosin last month so I needed a lot. This month, I am mostly just vaping the rosin so I didn't need as much.

Prior to these test runs a few days ago, I got my best yield from 2 gram pucks. Now, I am liking these small loads. I need to check yield next time but I think I got very good yields using 1 gram loads, not pre-pressed.

I get great yields off small presses, but the collection time is a killer for me.

Thank you all for the input fellow FCers, I'll stick with my current press that I have in my workshop......will update once I'm underway..exciting times :)

Collection is a bitch for sure. A new method of collection that worked and was simple would sweep the market like wildfire.

I find collecting rosin relaxing. Especially when compared to my other chores i do daily. I press a lot in a session, most times 5+ ounces. So I hit a little dab, (or three) pull up a comfy chair, clip some parchment in a clipboard and scrape away. Time consuming for sure, but it's not hard to do in 90% of my presses. I will get the occasional oily squish that's needs to be cooled but I don't mind collecting rosin.

I use a 4x4" piece of parchment for collection.

I pinch up a small piece between two fingers with the parchment square and use this to "wipe" each sheet clean. If the rosin is not very thick, one finger behind the parchment and a quick swipe will pick up a small piece. It is very quick and I can clean each sheet in a few seconds, gathering up say an ounce in a few minutes at most. For hash rosin it is even faster.

Thats a great return. Is that up 30% with one single squish or multiple presses?
For the folks running bottle tech, are you able to get everything extracted with one squish or do you find yourselves doing multiple presses more often?

Almost all the 1st squish ... I get an extra 1-3% from the 2nd squish ... (ie. would be <30% from 1st press likely ... but >27% for sure ...)

Although i dont have a lot nor rly good herb at the moment i couldnt help myself to do another
squish :D ....a bigger one..i wanted too see a friggin RIVER :D :D :D

...tried 14G of my Auto Green Crack and yielded 2.1G freeeshest rosin and waaay more important....the River started flowing...man cant wait to get some frosty indoor nuggs in my hands and the 2x4" pre-press :) :) :)

Looks like a lot of Rosin there! :o Was that 14 or 28 grams?

I did my first press today, having never done this before I was pretty excited. Actually I'm completely new to concentrates too so that was even more exciting :)

Anyway weighed 2.0 g of cured flower, pressed into into a puck, popped it into a fine mesh bag and then inbetween raw parchment.

My DabPress plates were heated to 200 and then a gradual increase of pressure applied till 6T for about 1 min.

Results were a golden brittle yet sticky rosin, weight 0.15 so not that great a yield but very pleasant in use.

I've ended up what seems like a lot of extra stuck to the mesh bags....I don't know how to get the sticky stuff unstuck off the mesh and think for the next one I'll give the bags a miss.

Does this sound like I'm on the right track? Any further advice for a newbie squisher.

Thank you all

You did better than my first press. LOL

Just keep going and experimenting. You'll find your sweet spot.

For smaller loads, I don't use a filter. It does seem to eat to much of it. For larger loads of 4 grams or more, I use a filter bag. For 1 gram presses, I didn't even pre-press. I just stuck the bud in and pressed. For loads 2 grams and over, I make pucks.

Keep it up, you get just what you want, eventually.
