Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

Have you tried comparing the IR temp with a contact type meat thermometer.

Just picked one up and I'll test it next time I press. It should be more accurate so I'll use that or get a proper thermocouple going forward.

I tried squishing some dry sift, 2.5g spread out in the bag, no added moisture and just folded over parchment. Best squish I got 36% which is getting a bit better. I should be getting a bunch of cheap outdoor soon so I should have a lot of pre-press material to work with for fine-tuning.

After dabbing rosin almost exclusively for a week and then going back to QWET, I definitely prefer the rosin overall. QWET now feels harsher on my throat and lungs with a lot less flavor, I guess rosin just irritates differently. I think I said basically the same thing before but I notice the difference a lot more now.

I found this one online a few weeks ago. I did a search but didn't find anything on FC, so putting it in here for info...

I was at a friends house yesterday talking about Rosin and his girl was like I got a coffee warming plate and joked about using it for Rosin. It looked very similar to this actually, compact and small.

The problem with this is it is just a $100 glorified hair straightener, only slower to heat up it sounds like. It relies on body weight to create PSI just like we all started. The Vice setups and Press setups that we see on this thread provide more consistent results by applying pressure more gradually and evenly.

Took the controller portion of these straighteners apart, unfortunately, there's no pot to calibrate the temps but there is a resistor strategically placed, so I'm thinking that might be a place to fit a pot. There is virtually nothing in the way of electronics inside this thing, 1 diode, 1 resistor, a led and a switch.

For those working outdoors or in cold temps, winter rosin is a completely different animal than making it in warmer weather.

As temps have gotten colder, my yields have decreased on my strains. I tried playing with temps of my jaws but I have come to the conclusion that boveda bags quit working once it gets below 50f. Once I added a bit of water to the weed from my finger tip, it gushed like normal.

Collection for me is the exact opposite as summer as I need to collect off a warm surface or right off the press..

Fuck I want a heated shop!

The boveda bags are still working, Your problem is the way temperature and humidity work.

For any given RH%, there's less total water mass in a low-temperature environment than in a high-temperature environment. This is because cold air can't hold as much moisture. RH% isn't a measure of total moisture, but of saturation.

If a large sponge and small sponge are both 62% wet, the large one will contain more water because it has more total capacity. With humidity, temperature is the equivalent of sponge size. Higher temperatures increase the total water holding capacity of the air.

The chart below shows this relationship, and shows that the water mass at a given humidity will actually double as you increase temperature from 50F (10C) to 77F (25C).

Keep using the bags, just keep them warm!

For any given RH, there's less water mass present in a low-temperature environment than in a high-temperature environment.

The chart below show this relationship, and shows that at 50F (10C) there is half as much water mass present as there is at 77F (25C).

Thanks for the info, I was not going to toss them or anything. It's 28f out there now and my weed was pretty dry going in the jar a few weeks ago, I think it got dryer out in the cold.. Easy fix though..

I wasn't worried you'd toss them- I just wanted to show it's possible to modulate total water content in your material using a single boveda, by controlling the temperature of your storage.

I'm going to try wrapping a seedling heat mat around my storage jar, and bringing the temperature up to about 90F for a few hours before pressing- I think this should uniformly super-hydrate the material.

@BoogerMan It kinda looks like a taco press, or sort-of like a scalloped bowl inside another, and all the pressure comes from horsing on it. Basically a hair straightener in an easier to manage form factor. :)

There was a guy testing one on FB today in a press, it did not survive one press or yield any rosin before it crushed. I do not think it is designed for that type of use (press) however.

more investigating of the hair iron circuit, for power regulation (2 settings hi/lo) it's using a diode to 1/2 wave rectify for the low setting, it's a very basic dimmer circuit. In lo temp mode, it looks like it's a simple 60hz 50% duty cycle PWM DC supply to the heater.

I tried pressing some dry sift and got some tasty results but my net yield on some golden kief was 23% for a net yield of around 7%. That's less than half than what I can get with QWET which isn't cost effective for me. I'm starting to run low so I ran everything I had left using QWET. I'll keep testing but it'll be at a slower rate since it's starting to get expensive. I still prefer it though so I'll likely keep it to small batches of super tasty strains.

I had this little Christmas carepackage, that I'd been given, that I hadn't used. (a little chunk of kief, a little glob of scissor hash, and a few little super frosty buds from different strains)

My vape tank was running low today and I didn't want to use the last 1/2g of concentrate I have, so I decided to squash up everything in the carepackage and see what happened. In the end, I got a 1/2 g of beautiful amber/ocher rosin when combined. I've never pressed kief or hash before so this was a great chance to test with a couple little chunks.

I know many people here press lots of hash, but I wanted to share anyway for anyone totally beginner to it, and to get any tips.

I had some fine screencloth (not sure what it's made of) lying around. I cut a small square for each of the kief and hash chunks. Just a bit larger than the chunk and just folded it around it like a present, then put it in parchment just folded in half. I squashed each very slowly and at low temp (~180-200). The folded screencloth held fine and didn't blow out. It just folded flat and the rosin flowed out.

The black hash ran way more than the kief. It's gooey and more self hydrated I suppose? So, what's the trick with kief? I tried breathing slowly on it (works good for hydrating buds), but didn't attempt to hydrate it other than that. Does anyone have any success pressing kief?

The hash seems easy (as expected), and no bags necessary, just wrap it in screen. I'll definitely keep an eye out for black hash on sale at the dispensary and compare price/yield to sale bud for rosin. I really just need to grow something though.

check out this random email i got. not sure of the pressure rating. not even sure how i was sent the email to be completely honest.. but for under $63 this rosin press looks interesting to me

Already been discussed that it technically relies on body weight/hand pressing, which isn't as effective if you want that tasty rosin. But I would like to take one apart to see about how/if it gets steady temps and if it really is a glorified hair straightener.

Alright, it is time I reported back with something more useful than just pretty rosin pics.

I have found myself squishing flowers with great consistent results now. Dialling it in took a while, getting a great setup took a while too (for me to get off my ass and do it mostly) but now I have found after finally getting off said ass and drying some beautiful bubble that I get a new issue:

BLOWOUTS! (Capitals for dramatic effect)

Even using the thick, unbleached muslin sheet I've used since forever I am getting the bulk of the contaminant being squished through the fibers of the muslin, which often remain permanently stretched.

What I have learned is that you can squish too hard with bubble on a vise rig. You do not want to max out the pressure on small ultra flat hash pucks! Has anyone else found issues with way too hard squishes? I get this issue with bubbleman 25 micron rosin screen (the old school one before rosin bags) too, I much prefer muslin though much more blowout resistant!

I wanna look into those SS terp tubes, but am concerned I'll end up losing loads of oil to the SS pores. Has anyone got experience with these?

Ideally, I want something I can put bubble into and squish with serious weight without concerns of the bubble and screen material becoming one in squishy matrimony. :science:

I get the tip of my finger wet just barely and wet my nylon pouches really helps the rosin flow if ur rosin makes noise when ya smoke it, its just moisture left in the rosin.

I use 25 micron but I presquish with my vice before I warm it and fold the puck if it gets to skinny then I give it just a bit more to expand when the heat and psi work together. I was blowing out left and right one day not any more.

I think my problem is too tightly packing the screen/pouch. This never caused blowouts with my old straightener tek because I never applied as much pressure methinks. So my solution will be looser packing with less pressure from the sound of it ;)

Cheers for your feedback bro!
