Turritella or corkscrew shell @almost there.
This is the shortest one out of a bunch I bought, needs a bit of adhesive where the wood and shell meet.
Isolated vapor path so no nasty chemicals or snail turds can be inhaled.

Lidded stems are something I don't make on a regular basis so it's always good to get a bit of practice in.
Red Mesh acrylic with BW MP and brass accent.

If imgur hadn't spat their dummy then one of the first pictures in this thread was of a lidded Crab Apple piece I made two years ago, it was another practice piece and never got finished but never got thrown away.

I could never throw something so unique away.

The brass couplings are just right for M or Omni cases as well.
There's been a couple of people mention the lidded stems and magnets. At the end of the video you'll see why I've been reluctant to fit them.
The case is fine as the lid is shallow enough to leave the cap exposed so it's easy to remove.
A deeper lid makes it a bit more tricky and I'd hate for someone to shake the lid and lose the cap.
It's only really a problem for loose fitting caps but it's still a problem.

Thank you @Copacetic that ones got 6 flutes on it, my lathe would allow me to do 24 but I'd need a tiny file for that.
Amazing how much difference there is between the two now.

Weekends come round so quickly these days.
Mrs PP is away until Sunday so I'm home alone, until tomorrow that is when a couple of liked minded folk are over for a bit of a session.

As I've said before not every piece of wood behaves itself.
It's one of those things you swear about at the time but it's an easy fix with my stem set up.
This BW hot end cracked on me when I pushed the wall thickness beyond it's comfort zone.

It was due to the want of a dual purpose stem and an easy rework.
Bocote and BW with brass accent 150mm VC stem

Or perhaps a Dreamwood Dobby stem

@Hogni It's never any bother listening to other people's ideas.

There will be a base and top made in a lighter wood and perhaps a lid with a nice finial.

@Summer before I buy any of those hybrid blanks I want to see them up close and personal. This way I can pick out the ones that will work best for stems. Suppliers won't cherry pick their stock for you so it's sometimes hit and miss, I've returned acrylic blanks in the past because they were poor quality.
Hybrid blanks are one of many things on an ever growing 'to do' list, especially hybrids and not just for stems.
