Had @Ruta round for a quick daytime social, much appreciated help with getting a better camera set up.

I set about doing some Omni Twists, @Ed's TnT sent me over some larger bushings, had a little bit of work to do so they worked with the Omni dimensions but they made all the difference.

Top to bottom
Thuya burr which is full of cracks but will get the twist done to see if it works, Purpleheart, Lemonwood, Pink Ivory, Panga Panga, Purpleheart, Zebrano, Steamed Pear, Camphor, Blackwood, Zebrano with grooves done just to see what it looks like, Cocobolo, Gaboon Ebony and last a Tulipwood.
Just need to set the twists out and get the filing done.
Can't thank you enough Ed.

WOW!
What a selection PP :whoa:
I really hope that the Thuya survives the next step, that's gonna be an incredible piece

Damn, curious to see the turned pieces camphor and gaboon ebony. Will they all become twists?
By the way, it might already have been asked but, you you still drill a carb hole in the pieces you make? I guess not always as I saw the apple and roach vapcap. But how does this affects the vapcap? It it simply thick smoke as a result?

@Copacetic I can get my thumb nail under the crack you can see, and it's not the only one. It's a test piece to see how well the twist comes out, it'll be done like the Blackwood I did for the telescopic. I think the more concave surface may be better than the convex of the others I've done.

@StormyPinkness I think the Pink Ivory may work better with the Blackwood style as well. Nice wood to work with. The Zebrano grain should show as well as the Sumac one in the mandrel picture. I'll get a side by side shot of them.

@Ed's TnT from the conversations we've had you know I am always well appreciative of any ideas or help and more than willing to share the stuff I've looked into.
Your kind deed has helped no end with these Omni Twists and given me a better insight into how I can go about making custom bushings for other stuff.

@Kozzmozz The Gaboon looks really nice in the round and as a square so it should turn into a twist just fine, again it's got a nice tight grain and good to work. The harder woods take a bit more time as they clog the file regularly.
My only concern with the Camphor is it is heavily scented, like this stuff. I think 'vaporizing ointment' is a bit misleading.
lmt5d8mm.jpg

It's strong when cut and I've kept a pot of the shavings, the smell may fade with use but I'm not sure.
It looked nice so got turned and the other piece will get the twist.

The apple and carrot's tiny stem, 'roach' I like that, has a 0.5mm carb, I have gone with this size for all my personal stems. Except the Bloody Mary Jane.
I've kept with the 2mm standard size for anything I've sold but am willing to do any size or none.

For myself the old new tips don't need the carb, they breathe enough not to need one. I'll do a load of testing this weekend and see what comes of it. It may be beneficial to have a small one to help with an internal self clean type of situation, the air entering may help to keep the inside of the wood clean.

I can send out a small 0.5mm drill bit with each stem if people would like to see for themselves.

Bit of a quandary really and any input from the VC community is always welcome.

Day off from shed work tomorrow and then it's going to be a full on filing frenzy. They should all be done by the end of the weekend.

My new burner is the dogs. I can chuck big bits of wood in and just let it do it's thing, which let's me do mine.

@Hogni and myself have been doing our bit for UK/EU relations, whilst M and M bicker about shit no doubt, and we've spoken about blanks from other materials. I've spoken to a few people about the non wood blanks and because of material safety and the carb I've shied away from them.

Now I may not have to, Anglo German relations has helped me see where I could take this.

This stem has a SS condenser which is threaded into the Blackwood ends, meaning no vapor contact with the centre portion of Padauk, I've made this for myself and treated it like a pen maker would and glued the condenser into the Padauk and then put a thin layer of glue on the joint between the woods.
There is enough of the condenser screwed into the hot end and the MP that no vapor comes into contact with the glue.

I glued it because the threads are so fine, 0.5mm, pitch repeated undoing would result in a cross threading and irreversible damage.

This means I can isolate the vapor path and use some of the fancier blanks, be it stabilised or some of the acrylics available.

Also had time to get these done, top row M. Ebony, P. Ivory, Purpleheart, Camphor, Zebrano. The Zebrano, Thuya and last Purpleheart Twists have issues.

Bottom row Panga Panga, Lemonwood, Tulipwood, Steamed Pear, Sumac, Cocobolo and Blackwood.

@phattpiggie, man what have you done? This piece is one of your nicest!

Hope our connection here will work but I think so. If yes, phattpiggie will offer absolute lovely pieces of wood in the future! For sure they already are lovely up to date but there will be a lot more to come

EDIT: Its a pitty, I didnt get the 3 amber cigarette holders for pattpiggie I spoke about a few posts ago

Hahaha!!!! I don't know how I got bumped out of this threads notifications, but I'm back and I just saw that VC 14mm VonG stem.

Oh my good Lord! @phattpiggie, I may have to add that to my order as well!!!! It's not only beautiful but functional and versatile. Such talent!

Every piece you turn out is a winner!!
I've kept with the 2mm standard size for anything I've sold but am willing to do any size or none.

I am pretty much sold on the mouthpull-closed carb technique for my Vapcapping but I would like to have a carb, a small one, like the .5mm one that you describe. The best of both worlds.

Blackwood holds a thread nicely but is probably better with the coarser pitch, 0.5mm is very fine.
It's proved a point @Ruta and as always it looks better up close and personal. The Padauk is rich.
It looks like you've slaughtered something on the lathe when you've finished.

@Shannock TiOkin, Dans work is incredible and I admire his craftmanship, and his photgraphy.
His work is bound to pass on influence to others.

@Kozzmozz yes just experiments. Short stem don't cause me any problems with harsh vapor, I prefer the 100mm'ish lengths that I've done as I find that length feels right.
The longest all Padauk one has an air about it. Grand indeed, very nice choice of word.

@Hogni I think the idea we discussed looks more promising now, Was denkst du?

I also saw this on UK Ebay and thought £7.50 for post that's a bit steep, but buy it now £12.50 okay.
Then I looked again 1920's Cranberry overlay crystal £125, a bit too much for me but if it's 8mm how decadent would that be.

@Squiby Many thanks, the 14mm came together really well, I'll be doing another version of it as well.
Squibuary is just round the corner.:)

@Kozzmozz some blanks can be incredible money, the prettier the wood the more money in most cases.
I saw an unusual blank the other day which was 18 Euro.
Look up 'wooden pens' and 'wood blanks' in your native tongue when you have some spare time.

The steamed pear is Swiss, I believe, and turns really nicely.
It has been used in place of Ebony and I can see why once it's been darkened down, tight grain but fairly easy to work.
I will try and stain some using the tea and wire wool/vinegar mix's and see what happens.

You throw rocks at Piggies shed and you'll have a hoard of FCs fans to deal with. Just sayin

O'l Phatts is international. We got his back from the States for sure. Not that he would ever need it. I don't know anyone who's ever had any issues with him. Just wanted to let Phatts know how much we appreciate all he's done and continues to do.

@phattpiggie I'm all in for stain experiments! I saw this video of the 'Slingshot guy' on youtube. He stained a piece with his own blood... Looked nice.
edit: My point was NOT that you should do that yourself

So is my Birthday!!!! I think I know just what I will treat myself to.....

@HD Springer I'd shit the bed if I could get a sale in Chile or Japan, we've had our first FC VC'ers join from these countries.

I've got a long way to catch up with George, but it's early days yet.

Other stuff in the works Mr. Springer, I got shipping confirmation, and when I get a lull it'll be interesting to see what happens. A couple of ideas to try out.
