Those million people are out to lunch. I have a Twitter account. I don't think I've ever actually sent a Tweet. But I've been tuning into Twitter more in the past week than I have in the past year. I'm sorry, but this is amazing.

Musk also seemingly spends about 9 hours per day shitposting on Twitter while being the CEO of half a dozen companies. Seeing the propaganda about how hard executives "work" and how they deserve their outrageous compensation fall apart in real time is wonderful. Nice little early Christmas gift.

Aaaaaaand that's a wrap, folks. I think this'll do it.

I don't think you could've designed a better way to make Twitter absolutely cancerous to every corpo advertiser. If for some reason this doesn't work, we'll need to move on to the nuclear option: paying $8 for a fake Disney account and tweeting a few racial slurs.

I did not think he'd run that website into the ground this fast. Figured it would take months.

It's a free speech buffet.

The "smartest guy" in the room lost 10,000,000,000 a month for the last year. (1,141,552/hour 24x7x365)

Could this all be part of his Plan to Save Democracy? He is a genius, no?
Maybe he's willing to spend 40 billion to ruin Twitter, take down countless corporations via disinformation and in so doing, save humanity?
Hey, it's as good a guess as any at this point....

Nahhhhh, he's an idiot who has failed upwards his entire life. I do appreciate him totally annihilating the capitalist myth of meritocracy in a very public way though. Thanks for that.

I almost feel bad for the guy. He's a deeply sad man.

ooooof. That stings. Remember.... this Twitter+ bullshit was supposed to be $20/month. Stephen King said that
is fucking stupid, so now it's $8. That's how the biggest business genius on earth operates.

Not that his $8 checkmark scheme hasn't produced some gems (sort of like his daddy's slave-run emerald mine in apartheid South Africa).

Besides making the site cancer to advertisers (their only real source of income), Elon managed to reignite The 30 Years War.

It turns out Elon and Fuckerberg have been stealing headlines from another dumb oligarch.

here’s the thing to keep in mind: Twitter is loaded with debt from the acquisition and needs to pay roughly $1 billion a year on it. In 2021, Twitter made $5 billion in revenue and did not turn a profit. “This isn’t complicated,” says Mike Roberts, a professor at the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. “He owes a bunch of money, and he’s gotta raise money somewhere, somehow. What I wonder is about the ability of Twitter to pay this debt.”

No company he's ever been a part of has survived without a massive influx of gubernment socialism money. That's why capitalism's Best Boy made it to the #1 spot.

Elon's gonna need a bailout, simple as. He can threaten to release DM's and other private info from politicians unless he gets an influx of public money. People forget, Ted Cruz "liked" porn on 9/11. Imagine what these freaks do in private on that hellsite.

Speaking of 9/11, I have another revenue idea for Musk. He's bankrolled by the Saudi's now. Simply sell the geolocation info for dissidents in Saudi Arabia to their government, I'm sure other authoritarian regimes would pay for that service as well.

This is amazing though:

For advertisers who have put their business in Twitter on hold, the fake accounts could be the last straw as Musk’s rocky run atop the platform – laying off half the workforce and triggering high-profile departures – raises questions about its survivability.

  • Twitter installs have grown by 21% since Musk's takeover, while Mastodon's have grown by 657%, according to the data.

FTX has been hacked

more than $600 million in cryptocurrency reportedly fled the wallets of bankrupt FTX late on Friday, after which the company claimed that it had been hacked.

"FTX has been hacked. FTX apps are malware. Delete them. Chat is open. Don't go on FTX site as it might download Trojans," wrote an account administrator in the FTX Support Telegram chat. The message was pinned by FTX General Counsel Ryne Miller.

I mean they can call it a "stupid mistake" till their blue in the face, but it doesn't look good when FTX's CEO described their exact business model as a Ponzi scheme in April.

I think it's easy to write this off as simple crypto bro fuckery. But a lot of "smart money" backed these scam artists, including the most reputable venture capital firm in Silicon Valley.

Pretty terrifying that The Suits...the smartest guys in the room, keep getting taken in by these scams.

Speaking of which, the hatchetman they brought in to slice up Enron is gonna do the same thing for FTX.

Just an incredible week for Capitalism. A true meritocracy, where we're all ruled by the greatest among us. Perfect. No notes.

@florduh if you're not already aware of it, you might want to get Matt Levine's newsletter 'Money Stuff' (https://newsletterhunt.com/newsletters/money-stuff-by-matt-levine); he's had a lot of excellent analysis of Musk and Bankman-Fried.

I haven't! Thanks! I love learning about these scams. WeWork, Theranos, general crypto bullshit. I'm like a pig in shit.

It's old now, but "The Smartest Guys In The Room" documentary is on Hulu. The Enron thing sort of got memory-holed since the whole thing fell apart in 2001. A...certain aviation incident overshadowed what otherwise would've been the biggest story of the early 2000's. Especially since W was up to his knees in it.

Edit: This is sort of amazing too.

In the middle of these losers crying because they sold their audience on the FTX scam, an ad plays for another crypto scheme. One of the dudes said "look we don't know who is gonna fall next, but we already signed these advertising contracts so...."

If there’s such a thing as a warm and cuddly boss, Musk has long been the opposite to his employees, who now number more than 100,000. He burns through executives with the heat of a battery fire. He takes criticism personally, even when it’s a matter of worker or customer safety. He’s been known to fire people on a whim. Since buying Twitter, his public image is shifting fast, from self-described techno-king to unpredictable court jester and human tornado.

SpaceX relies on government contracts for its survival. So if you're a US taxpayer, congrats. You are now paying for the richest guy on earth being a terrible businessman.

This Twitter+ bullshit has anywhere between 60,000 and 200,000 rube subscribers. Musk needs like 12 million subscribers...just to service the debt. He needs at least 15 million to break even. Never gonna happen, and even if it did... the Blue Check would be rendered worthless. Before the Musk regime I believe there were around 200,000 blue checks.

I see the "Free Speech Fundamentalism" is going well too:
