Discontinued Hopper io

I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts about the new cleaning directions. @Vapor_Eyes showed it to us in this thread last Tue at 10am. He said "Another difference I’ve noticed in the manual is that they no longer recommend cleaning the chamber with isopropyl alcohol."

Isn't that going to leave a noticable layer of stinky oils? I can kinda understand the reason, iso includes water, and consumers can really mess stuff up (considering their warranty) but will a cotton swab really keep up with the residue?

Had my io for a week now and wanted to share my quick summary.

It works and works very well, I think consistency is the best word and improvement to summarize the io. It is my 4th hopper, the 3rd was a Nov 2019 model, I already have had issues with that new model's heater being wonky. I only have 1 good battery it's close to 3 years old and I am getting 4-5 bowls on a charge. I only use mine on 4-5 through water, an empty glass piece, or a drip tip, I've always had a high heat tolerance for vapes and use them all at max temp. Never any backend heat, the draw is consistent everytime from click on to first vapor production. It's great, I am very happy with it and it's clearly better than the latest version of the OG. Can't wait to get new batteries to rip through.

One weird thing which was easily fixed... I plugged it into the Hopper charger and the light blinked once every 10 seconds. I thought it was charging but after 10 blinks it stopped blinking altogether. I asked hopper and they told me click it on and off then reattach. I did that and it fixed it. It blinks every 2 seconds when charging, and a double blink every 2 seconds when full. Still have no clue what the blink every 10 seconds indicates but i was able to repeat it many times in a row with a consistent 10 blinks then off result. It has happened once or twice since then and always resolved by a click on and off then back on the charger

I have never needed any more than a dampened swab to clean my Hopper’s chamber.

They've changed it so that if damp it voids the warranty though according to the wording in the manual.

I assume that's just a policy to cover themselves in case of user stupidity though ... and generally speaking I doubt it would be an issue ... however, obviously I don't speak for Hopper Labs.

Well, my thought is that in you can never overestimate the stupidity of the general public.

You know that they meant just damp qtip with no ISO running off of it. I know that. And, I wager most folks know that also.

But, I bet there are a bunch of folks that just dripped ISO below the oven off a wet qtip which slopped that "stinky oil" all over the heater and temp sensor, but WTF....its a life time warranty so just send it in.

All I ever do is use on the oven is one of those small bottle brushes that comes with most portables.

I do throw the MP into ISO and into an ultrasonic cleaner.....now that works well.

I tend to agree. I have doused entire Hoppers in contact cleaner with only positive or neutral results. I can’t imagine the IO being more delicate.

Quick update:

Batteries shipped from the factory to us 2 weeks ago but we are still awaiting their arrival. They are somewhere in transit to the USA. What we have learned from our contacts is that shipments out of China that are not PPE are suck in a huge backlog. The fact the batteries are considered Hazardous goods is not especially helpful either.

What we have learned from our contacts is that shipments out of China that are not PPE are suck in a huge backlog. The fact the batteries are considered Hazardous goods is not especially helpful either.

So what else is new? These types of batteries are generally considered hazardous, so what has changed in several years since you’ve been selling them? I find it hard to believe this wasn’t accounted for with this GHB3 shipment and the target April ‘20 date - which has now passed.

Approximately how many are you expecting in the first shipment? I’m waiting on 5 from last year to replace the ones you recommended properly disposing of after the HL fire. Others waiting for them too, without and with Hoppers - io and legacy.

I’ve learned the first time 4 years ago to patiently wait, which it took 17 months to receive my then new Ti. This is why I won’t jump in right away with io as much as I want (not need) one. I’ll use my pre order Ti tonight with some fresh new flower. TGIF to all.

Are Hopper IO's currently ready-to-ship, apart from batteries? (I mean new ones if I were to purchase one ... not pre-orders ...)

Just curious about the state of production on these ... anxiously awaiting my MaxVapor AC adapter to pair with my functional Ti hopper ... and considering sending in my SS hopper at some point for warranty repair (as it hasn't worked in years) ...

The coronavirus has disrupted international shipping quite a bit. I ordered a 510 battery from Yocan in February just as this was getting serious. I paid for expedited shipping, 5-7 days, and it took a month to arrive. Being a Li-ion battery I’m sure it was classified as hazardous also. I’ve even had multiple delays with non-hazardous domestic packages lately.

I know it’s anecdotal but I’ve seen similar reports about international shipping all over the internet.

It’s not HL’s strong suit, that’s why. They cited above there will be slight delays, as usual. All the more reason for me to sit in the wings and see how things play out with inventory. It’s funny because I love my legacy Hopper very much and couldn’t wait for its yearlong stint in RMA-ville, and it’s been working great 8+ months now post RMA. I use almost daily too as part of a great tandem with my Tinymight (my new number one vape). I even have funds now to buy whatever vape I want, whereas this hasn’t always been the case, and I really would like an io but I won’t pull the trigger this soon given the battery situation.

In my opinion, the io is HL’s 2.0 moment - either they climb out of their hole with it or we’ll cover the hole with dirt and be done with them. I think they’ll turn it around and I’m rooting for them but historically they’ve given us reasons in various aspects to doubt them.

If the io temp is calibrated higher relative to the OG Hopper I can see myself using it natively on 2 or thereabouts, where as I’m using it now around 3 on my pre order Ti. It would be an interesting comparison among other improvements. Time will tell...

I pre-ordered a hopper and it is my first hopper. I will definitely never vape with a bong just pure.

My question to all the old Grasshopper users, has anyone ever used a silicone mouthpiece because the front end gets too hot, or is the money for the $ 20 wasted on the 5 pieces I ordered?

Yes the silicon mouthpiece is a good purchase and over time they'll get sort of scuzzy-looking so having replacements isn't a bad idea. I usually use glass, either a j-hook or a bong, but when I use it alone I treat it like a one-hitter and let it cool down between tokes.

Personally, I prefer using the PFE and I bought a bag of 100 silicone "drip tips" for ten bucks — which should last me a few lifetimes!

I usually cut them back a little to allow for a wider opening as the tip itself closes down quite a bit.

Let’s talk about instant. More precisely, instant on. As far as I can tell the Hopper io heats up to temp instantly, or very close to it, less than half a second. I tested this with an empty chamber so I didn’t have any material soaking up the heat.

Instant is nice. Waiting for my OG to heat up feels surprisingly slow now. Is instant necessary? Probably not, but it will help with battery life. It’s almost too fast. I’m used to clicking on my Grasshopper and then bringing it to my lips or putting it in a glass piece, I usually still have a couple seconds before it’s ready. With the Hopper io it’s best to wait until you’re ready to hit it to turn it on if you want to optimize battery life.

I’ve been using my OGs for almost four years so it’s hard to break that habit with the io. Speaking of old habits, I also find myself staring at the lights waiting for them to turn blue more often than I’d like to admit.

I think it stays cooler, I think the difference is very noticeable. I use my Grasshopper native but you have to position your lips in a certain way and both the mouthpiece and body get more hot. With the Hopper io the mouthpiece gets a bit warm but not uncomfortable at all in my opinion.

I use it mainly for personal use, one big hit at a time. Two hits in a row is warmer but still not bad. In a group setting or with constant use it might get hot, I can’t really test that with my tolerance and the social distancing going on right now.

No, I haven’t had any issues with the heater screen or the frontend screen.

When I first received my Hopper io I cleaned the frontend with isopropyl alcohol and then I rinsed it and let it dry. I used my PFE from my Grasshopper with my Hopper io in the meantime. It was nice already having a frontend I could use while I was waiting for the cleaned piece to dry.

I think they meant screwed in the sense of waiting. Last I remember hopper labs said they would prioritize the batteries for the hopper orders. Once those are fulfilled then they will start sending the extras. I could be totally wrong though.
