Correct, the beeswax, oil or whatever is just for finish. I don't think it penetrates very far, but I'm not cutting or hoping for a crack to find out for sure!
I think beeswax melts to liquid around 140F, but you don't need liquid to apply. Coconut oil turns to liquid long before that. I shave some thin flakes off a hunk of beeswax, put a little coconut oil in the palm of my left hand (tablespoon or so if still solid, a good puddle this time of year). I then drop some of the beeswax shavings into it and simply knead it with fingers of my right hand. It turns into a pretty liquidy mix in about a minute. The beeswax effectively melts to a cream, but mixes pretty well with the oil. Apply this all over a pre-heated nano (I go to 9 or 10 for 1/2 hour). Turn nano off and place on a paper towel or something else to catch drips. Give it at lest 20 minutes up until the next day and buff well. Adds a nice warm finish that is only a little sticky for a day or so.
Keep in mind that new nanos are finished with natural shellac - and this is a pretty hard finish. Until it starts to wear (6 months?), the beeswax, coconut oil, or anything similar isn't going to penetrate too much. You can still do it, but you're really just putting a finish on the shellac finish.
@syrupy 's crack is rare (first ever?) and a little scary. Someone said above that if they're going to crack it will usually be in first 4-6 months. I don't think that's accurate. I haven't plotted data, but IIRC they usually crack in first 6-8 weeks. I think there are a few we've heard of here that waited 2, maybe 3 months, but that has been a long while ago, and I've assumed there have been constant updates to use best raw wood, methods of turning, etc. I've been going on the 6 weeks theory for a couple years, and think this is the first one far out of that to split.
So it is a little surprising, but not shocking. The wood is turned down pretty thin and nanos do seem to get bumped around a bit - I know mine do. That's before we even consider the metal cup in the middle that is probably constantly stressing, then releasing the wood from the inside. Plus, wood is wood and it does things like this in much less "delicate" applications.
Hope Epic hooks him up with a warranty, and assume Andy will. Still sucks for
@syrupy , though. I know I have a real love for all my nanos (even the blemished one I picked up along the way), and to have one crack would be heartbreaking. So, hang in there
@syrupy !! And, maybe take some solace in the fact that yours is a special case.
