Ascent Vaporizer by DaVinci

[quote"VaPeD&CoNfUsEd, post: 445024, member: 11949"]The vapor is wispier than I had expected. Wayyyy better flavor than the original DV but the cloud production of the original crushes the ascent! Anyone else notice if you draw a little to hard with a small load it gets sucked up against the screen and then stops producing any kind of visible vapor all together. I hate to get on the downer bandwagon but I just expected more from this unit I guess.like was stated earlier it is capable of great clouds but you will work for them!!! Also yes the silicone is definitely in the air path! The only way I can think of to stop it is push the glass screen down tight from the top after the unit is packed and closed, but how would you get it back up?? I if you were to force it open it would snap the screen off!!![/quote]
Tried It and cracked the corner of my screen...lol

First off, kudos to the mods for not deleting all the recent posts from actual reviewers with actual production units slamming the Ascent where it needs to be done. I was having my doubts about their neutrality (Sorry, seeing pakalolo right next to Davinci people makes you wonder about this. Please don't take it personally, pakalolo). My faith in this forum is restored.

I was a fan-boy for this thing all along, but now I'm feeling like I've been drinking the kool-aid. We all know by now that first batches of any new vaporizer have their flaws. Even if they are 6+ months in the test phase. :\

  • I'm a big one when it comes to "Seeing is believing", which is why I find all these pictures and especially Pappys video very disappointing. I can personally live with scratched/warped indicator screens (remember, we aren't paying for gorilla glass here), but vaporizers which apparently have been controlled for quality not producing any vapor at all (eg Pappys Ascent) - no way. If I'm expected to pay $250+ for this thing, it better at least do its basic function, I'm not going to pay another $xx to have it sent back etc.
  • Where are all the videos of people successfully using this thing? It's great to read that so many of you are getting good vapor production - so why not make a how-to-use-the-Ascent video with clear instructions to get some decent clouds? After seeing so many mixed reviews this would be an assurance.
  • 99% GoG is not GoG. Reading about vaporizing silicone is making me feel even more uneasy about this product. DV seriously should be giving us honest information (i.e. some form of proof) where this silicone is coming from and what it is made of. As long as this remains unsolved it is a deal-breaker, at least for me. Sometimes it would seem like this is a forum full of indifferent stoners who will vaporize anything if you consider the fact that the vast majority of the vaporizers here are NOT glass-on-glass.

Looks like the Solo is still the benchmark in the portable market, even though that unit also still has its flaws. At least that one is ready to buy in its 4th (?) version and there's no uncertainty about having to wait another x months until all the flaws are actually worked out. And its available in Europe, too.

I'm sorry to have to bring you another disappointing review. I feel like I can coin a new term. We've been "DaVinci'd". I should have learned my lesson after the first DaVinci. The ascent has the same nasty plastic taste but worse. Very wispy also. I also own a solo with pvhes and think it blows the ascent away. I feel duped by the promise of an all glass vapor path. Total crap.

After I read a post about how a guy shined a flashlight and saw smoke coming from the thing unpacked... I tried the same. It smokes from the bottom where the heating unit is. I called DaVinci and they initially said to use it and breathe that in! After I told them I wasn't comfortable at all doing that they said to run it for 5 cycles... (I set it to 20 minute motion timer). I will update after I complete that but I am not optimistic. So much so that i was hesitating buying the shorty pvhes gong and stem until after I tried the ascent, but I just pulled the trigger on them as it looks like the solo will remain my goto. I am mad but at least we have the solo. This company sucks. All marketing, they can't even produce a product that doesn't taste or even appear to be dangerous.

Don't all vaporizers require a "burn in" when they're new? To get rid of that "new" smell/taste? All the units I own and have tried have needed this...including the solo. Is the smell/taste being discussed here something other than that?

If it eventually burns off, I wouldn't sweat it. Lots of new vapes need a burn in period. Not stoked about being told to breath it, though. is this your first vape?

certainly far from my first vape. Just saying only on davinci's units do i actually feel like im inhaling plastic tasting stuff. I really hope that subsides. Its still smoking after 3 20 minute sessions of burn-in at 430 with cooling in between. To be emitting a smoke is really not okay. Are you guys not experiencing this? Put it under a light. I can't believe so many people are seemingly inhaling whatever this is.

I did not have a taste anything like this with my solo. Though I did with the original davinci.

Anyways I don't see the bottom line of the solo performing better with a pvhes gong or stem changing. The solo is just effortless. This thing is too damn wispy. I think its pulling air from some rubber thing under the heating element that you cant access to clean. That is probably the source of the nasty taste and smell. It looks like the source of the burn off.

My friends call me "Menz"
With all the QC problems I decided to give mine a real close inspection...the only "problem" I can find with mine is the filmy streak on the OLED screen that is noticeable with the unit powered off...on, it can't be seen at all.

Have not had a chance to actually try it out yet, and may not be able to until tomorrow, but, if that is all I can come up with it is not a deal breaker for me. Not something I need to bother DV about...sorry some are not as lucky.

By the way...mine is a Burl...and the fit seems to be excellent on mine. I'll update if I find anything else not to my liking, but so far I really like this design.:)

me too.... so far that is

I'm getting consistently great results now. I've run quite a bit of herb and oils and no longer am getting the token DV packaging taste. Pack tight, keep the herb on the bottom and control draw speed. It has its quirks (like all portables) just take time to get the method down.

@sam reynolds mine gets warm on the bottom but not too hot. I can keep my hand there for the whole session if I want. Doesn't get anywhere near as hot in the hand as the original DV. IMHO.

I wiped the whole unit down with iso and have had no taste issues at all. The taste is amazing. Tamping the product down once or twice during a session also helps if you are not vaping a full bowl. I have had the temp shut-down issue happen once even though I was using the vape at the time. It hasn't happened again. I am going to increase the timer for the automatic turn off feature and see if that helps.

I'm in love with this thing. Sorry for you guys that are having issues though! My Ascent is performing pretty much perfectly. I turn mine on, take a few long and slow draws and shut if off until I want a few more hits. Flavor is great, effects are great, doesn't get too hot, doesn't leak vapor, etc. Love it.

Since you mention the original DV, can you tell us now they compare? I find the original's build superb which is why I'm disappointed to hear all the negative reports. And of course how they compare in performance...

Hmmm. Guessing we may have a defective one that's prone to overheating--which may also explain why the unit turns itself down (some sort of failsafe?).

I'll try again tonight.

Edit: My brother tells me that what we thought was film or condensation under the screen is, under closer inspection, very fine scratching--like what was shown in the pic a page or two back, but not as bad.

Another edit: we just cranked up the Ascent again (without using it)--on temps as low as 380°, the bottom portion gets uncomfortably hot within a few minutes. Around 400°, it's unbearable.

I guess this one will be going back...such an anticlimax after all this time...:(

Well.........I waited a day after receiving the unit and several attempts to use it.......you have got to be kidding me. Thick vapor? This is like inhaling warm air with the "new" unit taste. I'm wasting good herb here. I'm done with this fiasco. This is so frustrating I feel like going back to just rolling joints. The solo is far superior as a portable, but I don't like the hard draw/pull. The Arizer Eclipse model is my preference.
Two Thumbs DOWN.

are you packing it tight and what temp are you using?

Yes, packing tight. I tried at 392, 400, 410, 430. No noticeable difference other than cooked, wasted herb. Thin vapor would be a generous description. No vapor would be more accurate.
honestly i could say my experience was not much different. This thing was definitely not ready for release.

I'm posting this partly so that the two members quoted will be sure to know the thin ice they have wandered onto, and partly to point out that everyone is welcome to post about their issues, but repeated posts that do not advance the discussion are against the rules.
No problem, despite the FACT that my advocacy statements made on behalf of my fellow FC member/consumers DID advance the conversation, and still does. See for yourself the vast majority of posts after the wrist-slapping I got. They are as critical, if not more-so, than mine. And yes, admittedly, some of my statements were intended to be critical of DV and the current incarnation of the Ascent. However, that said and done, I will from here on out back off and trust in the good sense and intelligence of my fellow FCr's as they continue to provide anecdotal evidence (good & bad) and QC implications for themselves. It should be noted that mine was not a singular mission to bash DV, as I did also generously spread around my "Like's" to those who expressed satisfaction and successful methods with their new Ascents. I'm sure there's a silver lining here somewhere. I still want my Ascent, and will ask ezvapes to make all the quality checkpoints before shipping to me. Carry on my good friends. Enjoy!:cool:God bless America and our freedom of speech. Go FC!!!

i dont know what everyone is talking about with the no vapor thing i can pull hits comparable to cloud hits and better than i can get off my miniVap. if you think you have it packed tight pack it tighter this fucking thing tears hard
Leonardo, is that you? no offense. I have been too scared to start a 2nd session since I noticed the thing is smoking out the bottom un-packed. You are ballsy my friend. Im still burning-in going on 2 hours, still smoking on its own, Lol. What a mess. Has anyone seriously been successful in getting the thing to stop smoking itself?

I wouldn't say quite comparable to the Cloud. My session last night gave me decent Clouds, but you can't pull a rip on it like the Cloud where you have billows of vapor after 10-15 seconds. However, what I've noticed so far with the Ascent (at least mine), is that at 390 and above and using a long slow pull (like the Pax), and keeping the pull long and slow (not as easy without the resistance of the Pax), that I get very satisfying clouds. My draws are in the 20-30+ second range.

This device put me where I needed to be and I will update again tonight or tomorrow after another session with a different strain.:)
