Arizer Solo

Just wanted to say that I fucking LOVE my arizer solo with my new walnut orbiter. This thing hits me like a truck at temp 7.

Too bad you're not up here, there are several places you could get married......

Powerful combination for sure, with Solo providing a solid dependable source of vapor and the WT tailoring it to your taste. The 'proof' of that is the way we can crank it up temperature (and therefore vapor production) without harshness getting in the way. Very effective.

While I don't know it, the battery pack looks OK. But that cable is wrong on at least one end. One end depends on what the battery output is, while it might be the USB port, I doubt it. 9 or 12 VDC could destroy some expensive gear that way. The other end is too big, you need an odd size not the normal 5.2mm. This one will fit on the vape end and works for Air (which is 5 VDC). It is at least closer to what you need:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NQCMRJ6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

Good luck with it, but I'd have to see the output connector to be sure.

Thanks for your reply.

I actually posted the wrong battery pack. This one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aukey-1000...=8-1-spons&keywords=portable+charger+9v&psc=1 says it supports 9v / 12v output from one of the USB slots. What do you reckon? (Coupled with that cable you linked).

Don't know if anyone is interested, but you can plug the mighty mouthpiece into a solo stem with ease.

You're welcome. I'm sorry I can't give you a more firm answer, having never seen/used one. I don't think this will do what you want. Check out the first question answered:

Question:

hi, specifications state that there 9V and 12V. is that correct? if yes, how this device swich between different voltage? is this usb output?

Answer:

I'm interested in the same thing. After googling about this, it seems this is a feature of Qualcomm Quick Charge where the charger (in this case the battery pack) can negotiate higher voltage output to a Quick Charge compatible device in order to improve the speed of charging. What I would like to know is if there's a way to trick the battery into thinking it has a Quick Charge compatible smartphone connected to it and therefore supply 9V or 12V.

By cipnt on 02 April 2015
According to the review on this item by 'cipnt', only certain Qualcomm hardware can negotiate this - so not a lot of use to the rest of us.

By Big Ben on 18 June 2015

I found a very simple/cheap solution for outputting 12V from this battery or any usb battery for that matter.
Search for 'USB DC 5V to 12V Step-up Converter cable' on ebay or go to http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400820362313

The second and third answer seems to say you can't do it, it needs to 'handshake' with some special cell phone (which would protect other USB stuff from being accidentally damaged. The adapter suggested by the 3rd responder should 'fix' that, but it will be limited in charge rate (about ten times longer than normal).

FWIW this is what I did for mine, I modified the battery pack I was already using for the PD, that's it in front, it uses 3 18650s and works very well:

I have a question about the docking station.....

I never fully charge my solo as I know this is detrimental to the health of my battery.....

So if it's just sitting on the docking station, looking pretty, is it fully charging the solo? therefore damaging the battery???

If this is the case, then is it possible to reprogram the station to cut off at 95%???

@OF ???

Or anyone else???

Most modern devices have circuitry to eliminate overcharging. Goes for phones, laptops, etc., I would hope that would also go for the solo?

Of course Solo uses the same protections 'as everyone else', but that's not what the man said? He said "I never fully charge my solo as I know this is detrimental to the health of my battery.....". Which it is absolutely correct from a lifespan POV. Stopping charging 10% early (say .1 Volt, less than a session) will DOUBLE the life. Twice as many recharges. Cut it another 10% (now a session plus) and you double it again.....four times the useful life all else being equal?

Simply charging the Solo to full and storing it away will damage the battery over time, more so the warmer it is. This is why it and replacement batteries come to you 'part charged' (where storage time isn't an issue), otherwise guys would get brand new gear with lame batteries.

This has been discussed several times in some detail. You can 'read up' on the idea here:
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

The text around table 4 discusses this. Also of note, the military typically specifies a lower termination voltage (3.95V in some cases rather than 4.20V typically found in consumer stuff). They know this means that while they have to settle for shorter charge life, the battery will not normally need replacing in the lifetime of the gear. Arizer, like all other makers, wants the maximum possible run times that won't kill the battery off in the warranty period......that helps sales. And they'd love to sell you a replacement battery as soon as possible after that warranty runs out, that makes them even more money....as it should be from the Capitalist POV.

We can, if we choose, get much longer service life from our batteries if we take advantage of this and cut the charge when the top LED lights but the charge light is still flashing. You get a 'free recharge' this way since two such cycles is equal to a normal one in terms of battery lifespan? If you miss it, no big deal, but if you catch it you benefit down the road.

FWIW here's the latest version of my 'Gadget', which does just this (shut down charging 'early') automatically:
jy0w0hN.jpg

The normal charger plugs in upper left, the Solo on the plug as normally. Pressing the button (lower right) causes the processor (lower left) to turn on the transistor (upper right) to allow charging. It monitors the current used to charge and when it drops by the percentage set by the blue adjustment it drops the charge and beeps the beeper to wake you up. It also cuts the last half an hour off every charge. Yes, a one hour recharge is now half an hour or so since the last half hour of a normal charge is done at a very slow rate trying to jam the last bit of charge in without killing the battery outright...... Sales pressure, you know.

Thank you again! I had suspected it wasn't possible to achieve what I wanted from the battery packs that I posted.

Your pictured solutions looks really good though, and relatively inexpensive. What did it take to do this? I assume that you must have bought the battery pack and then put a new cable on which suites the Solo? Or is there more to it than this? If you have time, any links and some light instructions would greatly be appreciated (as is your patience).

The best way I have found is get some 99% isopropyl alcohol off eBay (it's fairly cheap and will last a while) and then some small smooth stones (rice could work but I find it sticks), put the stones or rice in the tube, put the stem in a sandwich bag or something similar, put alcohol in, let it sit and then give it a good shake. Then for bonus points pour the resin infused alcohol into a glass baking container, allow the alcohol to evaporate, and use a razor blade to scrape up the oil, et voila, medicine. (Cook with it).

Or if you aren't interested in saving anything, just put your stem in the dishwasher.

thanks alcohol idea is good, I usually make stem milk first and then soak em in alcohol

My friend has also been doing the same with his vaped materials, putting them in a jar with alcohol for a while (I've read different arguments on leaving it for a short amount of time, i.e 20, as opposed to hours/days) and then running it all through a coffee filter.

@OF when does mass production begin????

Anytime you're ready. Needs packaging and final layout and maybe removal of the adjustment, all 'turn the crank' stuff. Go for it.

I'm retired, I got mine, you're looking at it. Grief from running a business, and all the time/attention it demands, I'm not looking for. Glad to help but someone else can answer the phones and make the big bucks.......

PM me if interested.

Edit:

I forgot to mention, with some tweaking (to change the voltage) the same Gadget works with other vapes, cameras, cell phones and stuff that uses Li-ons batteries. OF

It's not much more complex than that. It's a 3 cell 18650 holder (I don't recall right off from where) connected in series (two wire jumpers on the back soldered in) and the end of a charger cable cut off. I glued the connections to protect them and covered the bottom with the stick on felt you'd put on the bottom of a table lamp.

Cheers.

So all it would take, would be something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/2316...3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=122 (I'd probably find a better quality looking one), then cutting the cables off to attach to this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Step-Up-Mo...id=1462382315&sr=8-2&keywords=12v+usb+step+up , and then three cells?

Not quite. The battery box will do fine, the the cable has the wrong size again. You want the one I gave above, you need a 4.0mm connector with a 1.7mm hole, not the 5.5mm one with 2.1mm hole. The boy/girl part won't work. Get the other cable and you should be fine.

Be sure to tie a knot in the wires or otherwise provide some strain relief lest you find it broken when you need it.

Yes, you'll need 3 matched 18650s and a charger for them of course. Lots of good choices there.

OF

Edit: Here's another idea for you. Instead of having to solder or something to connect the wires use a pair of this style connectors (the default standard, widely used in Closed Circuit camera installations. The installers will gladly give you a few if you see them 'on the job'. I used them for years before finally buying some. These are neat, you don't even need a screwdriver (although there are screw types 'all over'):
http://www.amazon.com/Mokingtop®-10...onnectors&qid=1462478297&ref_=sr_1_15&sr=8-15

Watch the colors/polarity of course, the male goes on the battery box side so 'power comes out the male' like on the Solo end of the cable. Such a rig is handy for other stuff too, if you're of a mind to..... OF

Whoops, yes I meant to link the cable which you shared.

That's really great mate, I think I understand what I need to get going now! Thanks a lot for your assistance :)

Just one more question though, what mAh batteries do you use? And how many charges do you get out of a set of 3?

Not that it matters a lot I think, but the last few sets I've bought have been these:
http://www.amazon.com/2500mah-disch...1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

I'm running them in some more demanding applications and have been please with the performance and the price is right. 300 cycles is the minimum I'd expect, I treat them well (avoid deep discharges, heat and full charges when I can) I expect considerably more than that. They should not die at once, expect them to get weaker and weaker until you break down and replace them......if you live long enough......

I use my Solo car charger quite a bit. It sure comes in handy during a power outage. I highly recommend getting the car charger.

When I bought my solo 2 or 3 years ago I bought a vape case and a car charger at the same time and I've used my vape case a lot (I store it in that case when it's not in use) but kind of weirdly I have never once used the car charger.

In saying that I don't really travel that much and the times I have I've gone to a place with power, like hotels, cabins, families or friends places etc. And I have never had a power outage that's lasted long enough for me to think I better go charge my solo in my car.

I bet one day the car charger will come in handy for me though.

I think maybe you've missed the point? Just why is it you think you've never been caught with a dead Solo and no place to charge it? Don't you think your foresight here has protected you from that? To old Murphy such backup is like a cross to a vampire.

"Mighty handy" some might say........

Effective insurance, 'well done, you!'.
