I might swap a ceramic heater from an old old solo into one of the newest model ones just to see what happens. I wonder if each model is programmed to have a specific heating curve or if it just responds to what the heater tells it.
The high pitched whine my m102 makes is a little annoying but I'm learning to deal with it. Anyone else with a ceramic solo know about this whining I'm talking about?
Ps I remember skimming over this before but I don't remember what is the deal with the domed screens again.
Fun idea, I'd be a little careful doing so.....don't I recall that there was a temperature change about the same time the model's changed? I don't own any in that range, but I recall folks saying that the calibration changed? This could well be in response to to sensor (thermistor, temperature dependent resistor0 change. That is 'had to recalibrate, the new sensor is way different'. No big deal, just approach with caution I think.
As to how it works, you're close. It heats until the change in resistance (from temperature) reaches the called for level telling the Solo it's on temperature. Actually it's a voltage that's measured, but that detali isn't important. So it largely depends on the sensor, how it's heated is not a factor. You could just as easily use the heater signal to open a gas valve and really get to temp fast......
Don't worry about the whine.....or so the little voices tell me, the whiners are just babbling....... What you're probably hearing is the inductor used to convert battery voltage down to run the processor and light lights and stuff. Heater power is different, it doesn't go through this converter. The offending part is the roughly square one low down behind the battery, the other square one, higher up, is the speaker (even though it doesn't look much like one.
Normally stuff doesn't rattle in such parts, but shock can break a bit loose. Kind of a first cousin to a humming transformer. No big deal (as long as it doesn't degrade or drive you nuts). BTW hearing the frequencies normally used is kind of a crap shoot by itself. Many folks can no longer (and may not know it), many never could (and don't miss it?). Women are better than men (go figure), and of course it gets worse as we age. Guys who shot guns 'without ears', attended too many rock concerts and the like are of course bad bets as well.......
Glad you got your unit back in train. A sick Solo is not a happy thing.
