Shit, now it's my turn to not understand, lol??? I really don't know why I'm having such a hard time with all this, maybe my brain has just never seen a female one until I started researching.

The one on the right.....so the wooden bowl end just drops into the female oven? I guess I didn't really realize that the wood portion would go into the oven part like that.
Here’s a link

Also, sounds like you have RBT devices, correct? Those have 18mm female joints as well.

Yes, you kind of pack it lightly so the herb stays put and then insert it into the heater core. You want to hold it sort of horizontal or inverted on glass, but it works great.

Yeah, that first pic was what I meant by wooden stem. Only one RBT stem that I ordered for my Stempod.

Ok, so now you and Coolbreeze have shown me what I didn't think was an option, the wood just goes right into the oven. Is that a @khelek41girl convertor?? Now we're getting somewhere, lol.

Now I understand. I didn't think the wood was meant to go in there. Big thanks to you guys, appreciate it. I think I'm gonna go with the female and mod it a bit.

Yes that is a @khelek41girl adapter.

So it is actually just like that, heating element is below the load and joint connection

didn't think was an option, the wood just goes right into the oven

Yeah so it's the same thing, except to be clear the actual heater is still below, the area around it is not as hot to vape, but will get hot to the touch

Hi there, after 3 years on Alan's wait list, he has just emailed me with availability of a few female end GTR units available. They are reasonably priced, however I have bought an Ed's TNT log as well as an Underdog log (18mm connection) and have been using them for 2 years now with great results. Do I really need the GTR since I already own 2 great log vapes? Also, if I purchased the 18mm female ss, what tube or bowl do I need, I'm need feedback from other GTR users. Thanks!

As you well know it’s never about need with us once we get to a certain point in device ownership. I have way too many logs and still jumped at the chance when my name came up last year for a GTR. I went with the 18mm female in SS. I got a few of Alan’s stems that he recommended. I was also pleased to find that all of my 18mm stems from other devices work as well. So if you have other devices that take 18mm stems and you have plenty already, no need to go overboard. Alan’s stem work is top notch though, so I’m glad I bought a few of his as well.

I received mine recently, they're both 18mm female, one glass, one steel. They join a Couch Log, 2 Woodscents, an Alphadog and a MUSA. I'm still getting to know them but they are very different from the others. I'd rank them with the CouchLog and Alpha in terms of power--they're up there (MUSA's powerful too). What's unique is the open draw, there's minimal resistance.

I got them because they were intended to be powerful (they are!), they would fit much of my gear, and because I'd seen Alan's work and had to have a bit for my own. They glass core I got to have a kind of pure pathway and the steel for durability, to take on vacation, hook up to a battery camping, etc. They're pretty different from each other in terms of power settings and even how they interface with some stems.

The advantages for me are: power, beauty & build, durability and purity, great prices, and mostly, they interface with 18mm male joints and wood or glass RBT style stems. Alan's stems--I have the newer modular ones--are of course the best. He also sent me a paper tube WPA with a cork handle and that's superb as well. I use the others mostly just to fit different pipes and to reduce load size a little easier.
Also, if I purchased the 18mm female ss, what tube or bowl do I need, I'm need feedback from other GTR users. Thanks!
From Alan, I'd definitely look into the modular ones, they are so good. Also ask about some paper options--it's a really neat idea well-realized.

Thanks for the responses so far and I realized that if I had to ask, then I need it! Going to order the 18mm female ss as well as stems - any stem recommendations for this log - for water and straight draws. Cheers
Ed's 18mm RBT stems are perfect and so are the Pyro Tech Vigreux stems. These are the stems from Alan that I got:
spaltedmaple14ft19mtmtddt.jpeg

The short part is an 18mm Male bowl with an 18mm male joint, on the long stem. There's a 14mm wpa for it, and a 18mm female injector bowl for the joint or stem. Mine are glass-lined, with paper lining the area under the screen.

@coolbreeze That is one beautiful piece of @Alan s work. What type of wood is that? It’s amazing and I bet it’s pure convection bliss. Tempted to sign back up.
It's Maple burl, and thank you, I can't get over how gorgeous it is. It is pretty much "pure convection bliss," as you say! Rejoin the list! Time will pass and there you'll be! ; )

New Cherrywood SS female GTR with maple roasting tube, clear glass tube and wpa. The wood roasting tube is in two pieces - the long tapered end of the tube fits in the short end roasting chamber; I ordered a glass tube to line the long end of the roasting tube and you can also use a paper liner, and a paper liner is inside the roasting chamber up to where the screen sits. You can get a colored glass tube from Alan but I prefer clear glass. You do not necessarily need Alan's wpa, both my Underdog and Arizer solo wpas work just as well, and the Arizer wpa is easier to pull out. I would like to find a wpa with a glass screen that would work and if anyone knows on any, please let me know. Be careful using 18mm male pieces into the female GTR, they will get stuck.

I have been using the GTR exclusively for the last 2 weeks, and also own an Underdog Alpha and Woodscents. So far, the GTR has the most unrestricted airflow while delivering excellent vapor, at least as powerful as the Woodscents, and more powerful than the UD. A lot of versatility with this log as a lot of different tubes/adapters will work; I have used an Arizer solo bent stem with a glass screen (put an o-ring around to basket end to keep in place in the log), several of my UD tubes work, and still experimenting with other stems/adapters. I have been using Alan's glass tube and the Arizer solo tube for micro-dosing, and the wood roasting tube for sessions - the hits are great no matter the load size. The GTR works well with a water piece, however I have been enjoying dry vaping more with the GTR - no matter which tube, the vapor is smooth, tasty, thick, and rarely makes me cough.

I am still playing with different watt settings, and depending on the degree to which I want to get medicated, have been setting the watts between 10.5 - 11.3. I have not had to wait nor have experienced any degradation of temp or vape quality after doing 5-6 hits back to back. This is built with Heat Island technology and can be left on 24/7, although I turn mine off overnight.

I was hesitant to add another log to my small collection and soooooo glad I did - Alan makes top notch products!
Cheers and happy roasting!

Have many folks opted for a male GTR?

I was pretty sold on getting a male to use it like a ball vape but digging through this thread I definitely have my doubts now. Thinking the female might just make more sense.

My GTR is a plug type. It is fantastic, but I am thinking of picking up a socket one too. I don't think either one is a bad choice.

@coolbreeze Looks great!

My turn finally came up, and I've been emailing back and forth with Alan to figure out all the details so I can order a GTR. This will be my first log style vape, so I am very confused by all the options. Do you have any recommendations for things I should keep in mind, or ask for?

Is the wooden stem for doing "direct draw" from the GTR, like the GTR is a car cigarette lighter sort of thing?

I am assuming I will mostly go back and forth using it through a J-hook and a bong for when I want to hit the higher temps at night. Any suggestions as to what I should order from Alan besides the GTR itself, and the power supply because I already have one that should work. Obviously I should get some sort of glass bowl / WPA to use with the J-hook and the bong. The J-hook fits 18mm glass connectors, and the bong's drop down stem fits 14mm. I have an adapter to make 14mm connectors fit the 18, and keep thinking about getting an 18mm dropdown stem for the bong anyway. Other than that I don't really have much else to use with the GTR. I do have an old glass tube/stem for the Solo2, but unless I drill out some more holes in the built in glass screen, I probably won't use it because I like super open air flow.

Also, since I don't really have a bowl to use with the GTR, does it matter if I get the 14mm or the 18mm oven? Is the 18 more efficient because the heat hits a wider amount of herb at one time?

Congrats! Hope you love it!

I have two, both of them are 18mm females. I chose that config because I have a a few different vapes that use an 18mm male joint with basket screen for the bowl, so familiarity, easy to find/replace, and a good size for me. I love the quick heat-up and durability of the steel one, and the fit and heat retention of the glass core.

Yes, exactly. In this case the bowl fits the heater closely, and you draw hot air out of the heater core through the herbs in the stem.

That stem comes from Ed's Tnt, and you can use it with a rimmed basket screen or with a flat screen lower in the joint for bigger loads. The stem fits a 14mm glass bong joint as well.

Yes, you can get a standard 18M/18M ground glass adapter (or an 18mm/14mm male gg adapter, whichever fits your bong) and use it as described above, with a rimmed basket screen or a flat screen in the bottom of the joint. Those stems from Ed are a really nice option too.

From Alan, I would whole-heartedly recommend the modular stem I've posted above. The top bowl part is an 18mm male bowl with an 18mm male joint built in, so that part would fit your j-hook directly. A couple pics above that shows mine with a 14mm modular joint plugged into it to adapt it to 14mm pipes (this adapter is sold separately). So, one of those would have your ready for an 18mm bong joint, a 14mm bong joint, and a long direct-hit stem for cool direct hits. Mine is lined with glass (not standard) and the area beneath the bowl is lined with paper for easy cleaning. This 3-pc set is so handy it's a must have imo.

He also made me an 18mm male/18mm male paper tube bowl held together with a wine cork. It's works really well and can be cleaned by replacing a new paper tube. It's very big and open so I like that one for larger loads.

Also, since I don't really have a bowl to use with the GTR, does it matter if I get the 14mm or the 18mm oven? Is the 18 more efficient because the heat hits a wider amount of herb at one time?
You'll have to choose between an 18mm or 14mm male or female (like mine) oven.
https://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-gtr.52365/post-1738453
The males are like injectors and will work with standard bowls I think. I'm not sure what the direct draw stems are like. Of the female ovens, I'm glad I have the 18mm. I think a 14mm might make microdosing more feasible but you will be much, much more limited in bowl choices. In that case I would stick with what Alan makes as I'm sure it would be best-suited. With an 18mm male bowl, at least the rimmed basket config can make for nice, modest loads.
