Fluxer Heaters, induction heaters for Dynavap

Hmmm... this one is a 5A, but if it were a 10A ... I wonder ... I like the integrated Digital Display but the teeny-weeny potentiometer is s deal breaker. On the underside of the PCB, it looks like there are three "legs (? right term?) that can be de-soldered to remove that potentiometer. I wonder if a replacement potentiometer with leads and a larger knobs can be swapped easy-peasy?

@Mono Loco 1) Probably under-powered. Need to look further. 2) Your concept is valid. I would add that you also want to add a fixed resistor to get -only- the range you want to provide. For instance, you want to lock out over 12V.

This one looks very promising - https://www.ebay.com/itm/152947310464

Actually a boost/buck makes it a regulation supply capable of 10 amps periodic use. Nice low profile too.

Only mentioning this cause people seem really interested in power options. This one is a little out of the norm, but interesting.

USB-C PD is capable of putting out 20V 5A, so 100w. I was thinking of building something to power stuff on the go with a power bank using a USB-C PD trigger and converter. Would essentially be making the power bank a variable voltage power supply. Only a few power banks are capable of doing 100w, but I imagine when USB-C gets more popular it will be a regular thing.

You can find USB-C to DC port cables that will do this with 12V, but USB-C PD at 12V is only capable of 3A

Had to log in to change my sig today!!! Wow, this thing is the tits, what a great addition to the family. Thank you Jeff M, you've done it once again. I didn't know what I was missing with the 16mm coil. Also got the medium glass thickness, double as thick as FD60... really seems to heat soak my ti tip cap well. Doesn't overheat but it's a bigger first hit. Ill try a steel tip later. The orange green machine looks pisser with my dk green FD if you ask me, and you didn't but I don't give a yessssaa @mr_I am loving this thing. Now a portable battery option and a desktop always at the ready device. I love the magnet strength of this exposed magnet design over my FD60, I wish it had that even though the corners still work.

Stay capped my friendlies!

Congrats! I've got both, too, and agree that it's great!

It really is the perfect mix one flix and one flux.

You two get different size coils in each device? I'm getting a better, darker roast out of this 16mm coil. I think the 15 thin wall glass in my Flux, being so much hotter than the 16 the coil must heat the cap to pop sooner. I'm finding I'm allowing a darker roast with it, but maybe it's just cause I'm new to the device. I need to try my steel tip later. Sure seems like it heat soaks better.

If you go back in this thread there are a lot of tips on how to adjust your coil up/down that controls when the cap clicks, just like moving a torch close/further from the cap tip end. That’s assuming you might want to, gives you some more control.

You’re not helping with my 15mm vs 16mm dilemma!

Yes, I saw that a while ago, I may do some experiments!

Nope I imagine. I love my Flux with the 15, but glad I tried the Flix in 16. Maybe you need both!

Thanks for posting those pics, @Jethro! Call me biased, but I think they look great! :p Use them in good health!

I may be the only one interested in this next thing, so go ahead and call it a vanity project, but I got the first version of the DeWalt 12V battery breakout boards back from my PCB manufacturer, and they turned out better than I expected. They aren't perfect, but they are perfectly functional. Check 'em out:

IMG-0039-private.jpg

I think I can offer a simplified version of this like the one above for around $5 as a bare bones item, power cable and shipping not included (though if you ordered with a Flix it would ship with a Flix and wouldn't add any add'l shipping cost.).

I'd also like to bundle it with a power cable, but that may raise the price to ~$8-to-$10.

Taking this one step further, I also drew up a couple of versions with built-in battery meters, but a meter pushes the price up even more, to around $15 each, which may be more than people want to spend? (And I am not sure if anyone else even wants to persue this, so if you are at all interested in something like this, please let me know! ) BTW, they do make 7000 mAh versions of these battery packs that are reasonable priced, so if you are looking for high capacity portability, this is a pretty good solution.

Finally, if anyone was curious, this is what's inside these battery packs:

IMG-0040-private.jpg

Open them up and you find 3x 18650 cells in series, in a custom plastic case. The connecting metal strips are neatly spot welded in place, directly to the tops of the batteries. Simple and done. Also, it would be very straightforward to replace these presumably crappy cells with some of better quality if one wished.

In other Fluxer news: I'm working on some delayed orders from the September 2019 Flux Deluxe cohort, and should finish those up by tomorrow. I'll add some additional Flix to the store after that - I just paid the invoice for the second order of Flix cases and switches. Those should be here next week, so the net batch of Flix I post for sale should include raw and red as colors, assuming the manufacturer delivers what I ordered.

I'll send out the emails for the next Flux Deluxe cohort (October 2019) after that, in what I think will be about two weeks.

Thanks, all! I'll probably be back with more info later, but I wanted to post the above updates now.

Cheers,

OMG, if you could do that for my Mikwaukee Fuel batteries I would love it! That would be a killer setup. Milwaukee makes a 12v power source to work with thier 18v batteries but I don't know how reliable it would be. However...

...Since we are talking about creative power sources... maybe you'd all be interested in what I'm powering my Flix with now, if at the least for the comedic value alone! This is what I am powering my Flix with until I get my ac adapter. You were faster than me to ship the Flix than I could get the power source. But I built a big battery box for my ice shanty this past season (fish house for fishing hardwater, for those that may not know). It's 12v, and built with 3ea, 20 amp, LiFePo4 packs wired in parallel. It powers my fish sonar, underwater camera, a 10" lcd display, an Amazon fire stick, a small fan, charges my phone, a tablet, a bluetooth speaker, runs a small bait bubbler, all my led lights for an entire weekend and NOW my Flix!!!:brow: 60 amps of 12v lithium power, it's awesome. Here are my build pics, I'm obviously using it with the cig lighter I got with the Flix.

I have a cheap unadjustable AC adapter coming, but honestly I may use this setup a bunch, if at least to give my battery box a workout instead of it sitting idle between winters.

Hi, all. In case you are curious about the delivery time, I received my 10A 3-12v VVPSs from AliExpress today - ordered June 11th, so a tad over 6-weeks for delivery. The seller was " Claite Consumer Franchise518 Store". I bought an extra one as a "backup" and an extra-extra one that I suppose I don't really need.

"You talking to ME?"
Who knows!? I can't actually USE them anyway ... S-I-G-H .... :-(
I have homework, so I can't verify "D.O.A.?" yet (not that I'm skeptical of Chinese electronics or anything). This weekend, I'll at least measure their no-load outputs throughout their range. They are not a heavy as I would have liked, and the potentiometer knobs fell off two of the three during shipping. They are not broken, just off. The individual cardboard boxes are soft sub-par (very humid these days, too) unmarked "OEM" style boxes, not retail type. All the boxes were just tossed into a thin plastic bag with no additional packing material = very poorly done. I didn't even inspect the units for cracks or other impact damage, or rattles, etc. I guess we'll have to wait and see! For those who haven't seen them, the power cord is hard-wired to the brick, not a separate cable ... generally a sign of a ... uhm ... less-than-top-tier product. I'll get a better quality dedicated 10A 12v supply to have on-hand for iffn'wen these die!

My Mama always says, "Buying shit from China is like a box of chocolates ... ya' never know whatcha' gonna' git."

Two of the three Power supplies were the same, but the 3rd one was different - small potentiometer knob and relocated Digital Display. Is one better than the other ... who knows?????

The readings below probably don't mean much, as they were just at the end of the plug, with no load.
When first plugged in, there was a delay before the digital display fired up ... maybe 10-seconds ... perhaps the capacitors had to get charged-up first (?). The digital displays' readings were pretty close to my multi-meter's readings, so that's a good sign, no? I'm not trying to sell one, so I'm not listing it in the classified, but I really only need (well, "want") two, soooooo ....

Took the FD on a camping trip this past week. Six fully charged batteries lasted me four days ~ 2 grams or ~ 30 packed tips, 3-4 draws each. Changed the batteries day 2 just because I was 1/2 way there. Good times.

Here’s what I’m really thrilled about though, the Flix and the 12v car adapter. Road trip was great! I was really concerned as this was where my Flix had originally failed. The fixed version did not fail. I don’t advocate distracted driving but I’m ready to order one just to keep in the glove box:tup:
