Definitely
Yeah it's heading towards that. It annoys me a bit because I just got it and there is all this custom thing and malfunctionning postal service that stresses ne.
My baby daughter found my grinder behind the sofa. ( please don't call the social services) I'm having better results but still like its 80% at level 3). I only get marginal more heat at level 3 set to the max than level 2 which gives some nice morning hits on this off day. I also hope my perceprion is not distorted too much by the vapcap that either way extracts further and allows cumbustion when heated sliwly even if you respect the click. I have a lot of last draws fdrom the tsts left to finish with my omni before a little nap.

There's a problem with your unit. None of my vapcaps extracted more or taste better than either of my FW5.

The FW5 wont combust unless overly packed but it fully extracts with dark ABV.

I'm having better results with my old batteries (maybe the newer ones are fake ?) and more grinding and packing. When you say it fully extracts with dark ABV is it at max temp +1 well packed with several draws and small vapor near the end or easy peasy loose packed, completely dark with a few hits in each level and clouds at normal max temp ?

The highest default level on one of my units creates dark ABV. On my other unit I had to adjust the temperature at the highest setting up to get the same result. The ABV is very dark, as dark as any vape I've used produces. So there is definitely a calibration range.

Lower temp settings do a good job, but not as dark ABV.

@Daprezz
I'm fairly sure if I maxed out my temp setting it would combust....can't test right now and will post about that later...lol

I'd make sure your seals are good you can test with a credit card or similar. Also make sure the silicone around the mp makes a good seal. you can test that by removing the battery cover, putting your finger over the L-joint and blow - if no air then you're good! I'm sure you did all that.

I love my fw5 and unfortunately it's getting sent back today. I love it so much that I sold all my vapes and am sad about having to rely on this pen for use.

apologies in advance for the large pic, its not that easy resizing photos from iphone :(
my dog gets mad at me when I leave him behind. he enjoys paper products - rolls of toilet paper, books and other important things. i try to dog proof before leaving and went to a christmas party this past weekend. i returned to see my fw5 in his bed. at first i thought it was intact, but it in fact was far from it.

i contacted marc and to my surprise he said he'd take a look at it and if the parts were salvageable he'd work with me on a replacement!! what a great guy!!

any tips & tricks learned so far?
I keep a toothpick loaded in the battery compartment for stirring. If I dont feel like stirring i just tap the side. I generally try to skip the middle bowl for simpler bowl usage - bowls 1 and 5 sit fully seated. bowls 2 and 4 sit flush with the opening. this makes switching the bowls a no look and all by feel action. I've tried loading with a scoop, but i find loading with my fingers easier. i also found a cigarello container the perfect diameter to tap material into the bowl.

I'm experimenting with grind size next. I'll probably also experiment with the heat offsets. Temp 3 doesn't combust for me, so i'd like to bump up the offset until i find combustion and then back down 1 or 2 settings. next i'd bump up Temp 2 to the max. I used to vape on all 3 settings, but later found that I was only using Temp 3.

If I still find myself only using 1 temp setting then I'll max out Temp 2 and max out Temp 3. I'll use Temp 2 most of the time and will use Temp 3 when the battery gets down to two buzz. I find that two buzz its better to just switch the battery out.

For cleaning...I find I can go a really long time without cleaning. I'm considered a light user. I bought a glass tube with flat bottom. It's a little too large but the smaller test tube I bought was too small! so make sure you take measurements and account for ID (my mistake). So i just put all items in the test tube with ISO and gently agitate. looking back i think a glass test tube might be too fragile. also the glass mp w/ ceramic parts is also dangerous. so i mainly let it all soak in there.

New member of the family weighing in on this Friday night with the regulars, can you spot it? So tiny but certainly holding it’s own.

I’ve been using the FW5 almost exclusively for the week or 2 that I’ve had it and I’m genuinely impressed, a fully extracted bowl requires stirring which is not easy on the go but I can handle being a little wasteful on the move because it’s so stealthy.

Stirring while at home is reasonably easy once your finger tips get used to hot ceramic tray (about 5 days) and dialling in the temps is easier than it seems as first once you get your head around it.

Over all it’s amazing that @firewood puts these out single-handed and just for some form of balance I wish the customs form had the Black Friday discount price declared as I had to pay my robbing government even more for the pleasure of owning this wonderful piece of craftsmanship!

:peace:

What I do is grab by the edges and/or push from the rear/opening. It's warm, but not hot where if you grabbed right at the heater. Have you tried tapping for stirring? I tried that but cant decide if it helps any.

FW5 is the portable that beat out all the other portables I tried. I have a runt coming in next week so we'll see how that compares. EVO came in today but that's a desktop!

i wanna say “who’s a good boy” but I can’t
I rather not stress myself out.
you can still ask "who's a good boy," i just won't let him answer. lol. nah, he's good!! funny how the herb counters stress!! highly recommended to check it out when you can. it was the most well rounded of all the portable vapes i've tried and what i settled on as my #1 (sold all the others). if you like to micro-dose and/or have a low tolerance then this is a great choice!!

This definition of microdosing is fun. Americans are used to smoke it pure so the quantities change. In europe what you put grinded and packed in the chamber of the fw5 or a vapcap is not so much a microdose. Not even talking about x5. It's about what you put in a regular joint with tobacco. It would start to be a micro-dose with 1/2 or 1/3 of this quantity. ( like the small chamber of a Ti vapcap)

TOTALLY AGREE this is the best, overall, portable out there. I sold all my portables but a couple Pax 2's, just for a stealthy alternative and to have a couple conduction vapes for sessions.

As for potency, heavy users do great with a FW5 :)

Along these lines, best loading tool I've found:

https://www.amazon.com/Extra-Wide-A...ncoding=UTF8&refRID=MCVMZAVGEHFK34CMYGHY&th=1

The pointed end of the straw digs into a container of ground herb easy and fills the tip of the straw with as much or as little herb as you want. The just drop the herb into each bowl. If any tries to stick inside the straw, tap the opposite end of the straw. The vibration let's it neatly fall out. And a life time supply for $5, added bonus is great for shakes and margaritas! :)

Finally got my 5C back with the right calibration ! After remastering my technique for one or two days I can finish with even very dark Abv as I wanted ! This device is awesome when you master it.

Now I must finish my unfinished walnut. I plan to put some tung oil but hesitate puting a water based walnut stain before to make it darker/blackish. Maybe the fact it's water based could affect the fitment making the wood swell a bit ? Maybe a wood connoisseur has some clue on this?

Vape swap shop
I have now sold my firewood 5.

After a fantastic honeymoon period - there are pro and cons with this vape for my style of usage. The long draws required upset my chest on a couple of occasions, hence me selling.

Pros:

I love the form factor and tiny size.
The 5 bowl clip is great.
The one button interface and hepatic feedback is ingenious.
Overall very cleaver design.

Cons:

You need to take really long draws to get good vapor.
The heater seems a little under-powered to me.
Always worried about dropping it - seemed kinda fragile.

Dont get me wrong - firewood 5 was my top vape for 2018. I would have kept it if i have the room and the finances, maybe i miss it already. This has been replaced in my rotation with an IMP on a sinous p80. Also very small. Will be looking closely when firewood 6 comes out.

My ultimate vape would be a firewood5 make out of metal, with the heater out of a splinter. Dont want much do i !

I want to share a little hack to those who vape on the hot side of the spectrum ( end near combustion, dark brown abv etc). I can have my abv very dark with my fixed calibration and some packing but that requires long draws, an almost full bowl well packed and my best batteries full. Packing restricts the airflow and increases the heat. So I put a little hemp fibre ball in the L joint to restrict the airflow differently. Now I can have my very dark abv even with a half full bowl with "level 3/5" batteries. I don't know if it's optimal because you don't really need filtration with this stem and design and it must filter some goodies, but it definitely works to increase the heat.
