Same here, I've watched that video about 10 times. :D 0-190C in 4 seconds... now that's instant warm up. And using a single AA battery... :o If this this thing is half as awesome as it sounds the inventor(s) win a FC Nobel prize.

Very cool! Can you explain to a non-scientific mind how the convection is taking place when the user isn't drawing in air? Something to do with the difference in temperature between the heating element and the glass? :hmm:

0.04 - 0.09 grams per load sounds good, many of us appreciate small loads efficiently heated. ;)

How would you describe the taste compared to another vaporizer you've tried?

with the pins, they are a copper clad, so would anyone have to worry about the finish wearing off after extended usage (say over the next few years)? if so would there be some kind of replacement available? i see you offer replacement parts for nearly everything else.

also i dont see any kind of warranty information on your webpage and am wondering if you guys offer some sort of warranty and if so how long?

how hard and is it neccisary to clean this vape?

that last picture helped me see how everything works. seems easy to load and opperate.

This is really taking the principle "form follows function" literally.

I suffer from enjoying the look of my toys, as much as their practicality, my guess is others share the same feeling and were originally turned off for that reason.

Do you have any plans to commercialize the look of the vaporizer? What compromises could be made to improve on the product design without sacrificing too much efficiency?

so in this picture above, the battery pack is attatched to the unit? im also trying to understand how you get more precise temp using two hands with the unit.
Yes, in the photo the battery (only one AA rechargeable) is attached.

In regards to the temp, I am not claiming "preciseness", rather I am claiming control. The user feedback in regards to the process is very immediate -- and this makes more of a difference in actual practice than you would think! If you tilt the battery away from contact, it cools immediately and you notice the difference in taste immediately. If you tilt the battery into contact, it heats and again, you notice the difference in taste. It is satisfying to not have to wait for the temperature of the device to 'catch up' with your intent. In this way, the user can decide, on the basis of taste alone, exactly what they want from the pipe.

The key observation here is that the user's sense of taste/smell is going to be MUCH more sensitive and important than the result of any single-value digital control circuit. No other vape that I know of provides such an immediate and reliable feedback for those users who would want that. Of course, there is a high end limit, so those users who simply want full on heat can get that also without worry of loosing vape action.

Hi,

I will admit that we are especially proud of the responsiveness and the compactness of the system. In actual practice, it is the difference that makes all of the difference! Once you have experienced the lightning-fast action, you will realize that you have encountered a genuinely new kind of vape. Like any really good idea, it just works.

As far as 'suspicion' is concerned, its understandable -- its a natural response in most people when encountering something new and different. It usually passes quickly!

I remember when I introduced a prototype to a 'hard-core' friend of mine -- a 27 year bong smoker on a fast paced job. He said "I don't have time for those vaporizer contraptions -- when I want a toke, I want it now, not tomorrow!". He used a home-made bong, (since that was all he had time for while working), and he liked it, despite the insult to his lungs. The quick responsiveness of the Launch Tube is as close to that of a regular pipe as you will ever find and still be vaporizing! His conversion was instant and total -- naturally.

As far as taste is concerned, my opinion is that it is a lot like a regular pipe -- the first 7 seconds of the hit is the sweetest and most tasty, but not necessarily the stoniest. The next 8 seconds or so of the hit feels more full and rich. The second hit is very much like the first, with the exception that the taste seems to fade a bit towards the end. The third and forth hits usually taste a little more spent, but that is probably because it is my habit to to try to get the most 'bang' out of the load. By this point, things are done -- at least so far as I can tell.

In regards to the question about convection: Yes, there is a significant temperature difference between the central element/tray and the enclosing glass, and that sets up a convection cell. The convection cell creates a slight "wind" that blows up from the bottom, through the screen and the load, and out at the
top. This convection cell exists as long as the device is "on". When you are drawing on the pipe, the
top half of the convection cell, with the vapor, goes to you, rather than circulating back down to the
bottom.

Hi,

The entire device is perpetually guaranteed. The customer-service model we are using here is similar to that of stores like LL-Bean -- if you can show that you own one and want it replaced, we will send you a complete new unit, no questions asked. It does not matter where or when you purchased the unit or how it got broke, if it is one of our own, we will do whatever it takes to ensure that your personal instance works properly. Same is true if the parts are simply worn out -- we will replace it for new as needed.

In regards to cleaning, it tends to need very little. The outside glass and draw stem can be soaked
or swabbed in rubbing alcohol to get clean. The tray/screen itself tends not to get dirty since it is the source of heat, but if needed, it can be cleaned with fire or by gently rubbing with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.

wow  , i can't wait for a review or two of this puppy
this is sort of what i have been looking for :)
a efficient portable batt operated vape!
the only drawback to me is the looks, as
i wouldn't call it very stealthy looking.
if it had that it would be exactly what i want!
that could be improved on down the road i guess
it isn't priced that much more then a genie.
i might have to grab one up and try it in the near future.

i do have a question
tell me more about the OTHER portables that you
are developing???

We do have plans to change the look. Originally, our focus was on total absolute efficiency. That shifted to a focus on power and portability. We are currently shifting our efforts towards visual elegance and utility. To do this, however, we need a better sense of how people respond to this design to see what sorts of trade-offs would be generally acceptable.

The current design rendering style is drawn from the tradition of 'steam-punk'. It is very likely that we will remain with that theme.

Hi,

In regards to other portables, I can 'leak' that one of them aims to look much better, although it will probably be somewhat more expensive. They are currently works-in-progress at the Alpha testing stage. Beyond that, others in our company have explicitly requested that I stick to the product design schedule and not say too much about them at this time, since it will probably be several months before anything is ready to ship.

It is true that the screen is somewhat fragile. Normally, this is not a problem, but we do recommend that people treat it somewhat gently by not poking it with sharp/hard tools, pressing thru from the backside, etc.
Again, if there is any problem, whether due to the user or not, we will promptly replace the device. We have had several out and in regular use for some time now and have not had reported problems as yet.

Also, speaking in terms of 'expectations management', please be aware that the box packaging shipped with the unit is only that needed for safe transport -- there is not a lot of throw-away use-once glossy bubble pack, useless notes and custom commercial wrappings, etc, etc. Magic-Flight, as a company, is philosophically opposed to creating yet more trash in the world. If it is not absolutely needed, we didn't add it.

Of course, this has NOTHING to do with keeping costs down :p

But in all seriousness, this does look like a pretty neat vape. I didn't realize it was that small till I saw the pics of it in hand. Will be anxiously awaiting some reviews.

You have the capability of using a stainless steel screen as a near-instantaneous vaporizing temperature-range heating element. This opens a number of possibilities!

I can't help but presume it would be better (in many respects) to use 2 (or even more) heater screens, such as one above and one below the vaporization material; and use a tube rather than open vapor chamber. For example, you could place 2 heating screens within an air-drawing tube (rather than an open vapor chamber), with one screen above (heating air before it is sucked through the stuff) and another below, both heating and holding the material being vaporized. With stuff being held between two screens, it would probably be easy to make simple, inexpensive, swap-inable, refillable containers or cartridges (e.g., a glass or metal tube with heating screens covering each end, one end obviously easily opened and closed, with this filter cartridge fitting tightly within the tube through which one draws air). These cartridges could have different inner diameters (thicker outer walls or inserts) to allow a range of capacities and air flow speeds. [Other than the 2 heater screens, this is a simple inhalation-driven convection vaporizer].

As long as you answer e-mails on a regular basis then there really is no need for added paper in the box. what a great step yall are taking in creating a cleaner earth...I would be interested to see the carbon 'footprint' created by each vape on the market today. :/ :uhoh:

Hi,

In regards to two screens, etc -- Honestly, nearly everything has been tried. We went through more than 50 basic design prototypes, each with different geometries, operating principles, etc, etc, and many of those prime revisions had even more specific sub-branches. Lets just say that there are a LOT of different approaches, each with their own operable factors, advantages, disadvantages, and trade-offs. There is a surprising amount of raw physics involved, considering things like thermal mass, fluid dynamics, infrared prorogation, electro-chemistry, materials science, etc. -- more topics than you would ever believe applied to something so "simple" as vaporization, -- and all that even before manufacturing has had a look at it! This whole project has been an ongoing effort of several years.

Among our staff, it is a running joke that we should setup a museum of all of the different design and build prototypes. It would probably even be interesting, but it would be a lot of work to setup space for that and other things need our more immediate attention at the moment.

So therefore, rather than considering the specifics and trade-offs inherent in each design geometry, the discussion of which could easily fill a book, I think that I am going to have to limit myself to answering specific questions in regard to our current device offering and business practices. I can already hear our lawyers screaming at me for saying too much as it is :(

exactly how is the bowl reloaded, does the glass just slide off?

will it burn or scorch if left on the bowl too long, like if i dazed off for 5 mins with the battery on would it have scorched the herb

very very interesting and inventive design, taking convection very litterally, this vape just jumped to the top of my "to aquire" list, i especially applaud the "less parts to break" approach that magic flight has taken, it reminds me of another vape that i love dearly
