I don't watch the lights. I just rip when I'm ready...Solo keeps up with me just fine.I usually wait till the red(heater) light stops blinking between pulls. I find that using my PVHE GonG the temp drops a level if I take a big rip. it only takes a few seconds to recover but I do wait.

I thought something was fishy when you said level 7 in 20 seconds .
That's just impossible to reach that temp level that quick in the Solo .
I'm disappointed with Torontovaporizer for NOT knowing how their products' functions that they sell
on their own site . And the Solo is a well known popular model too .
But I'm more Dis-satisfied with Arizer for saying that this was Normal .
Show me a working normal Solo that can do that realistically . That would be quite the
selling point for any portable vape . The Arizer rep that responded to you should be
re-trained .
When you get a working Solo , you'll be blown away .
That's just impossible to reach that temp level that quick in the Solo .

I thought I would get the fitting 18/14 mm female to male next week.
Today it arrived.
The PNWT or the FUCK BOMB have too large of mouth piece for my liking.
This set with a 18mm GonG is powerful.
I will redesign these water pipes more for the MEDICAL PATIENT in mind!

I made a fitting with some 3/16" EVA for the seal
I believe that 18mm is the right size not 14mm?
If your combusting the 14mm is most likely fine.
How ever the 18mm is better for vaporizing.
Maybe this might be the disconnect?
Recreation verses Medical?

Not stupid at all IMO. Good question.
I use a safety pin with a hook bent in the end. Heat a largish one (number 2 in my case) up glowing red to 'draw the temper' in the steel and it's easy to bend the tip at right angles (even easier if you grab the tip with pliers while hot). Just the last 1/16 inch or so. I then hook it through the mesh near the edge and easily pull it free.
I then hold the fouled screen in some small hemostats (old roach clip....) and torch it until it all glows, let it cool, brush the ash off and stick the screen back in again (the back of the safety pin makes a good tool for this). I then close up the pin (the end cover protects the hook and me both) until needed again.
This is my favorite lighter for such stuff, BTW. At 3 bucks a copy shipped (when they're in stock....) they're a great deal IMO and get to you fast. I've got several in service spread all over, have yet to have one fail in any way......except getting lost (or swiped.....).

Not only that, but notice the one on the right has better aim? When it comes time to 'duke it out' the big bucks one doesn't stand a chance......
BTW I took the cover off the one I keep here on the desk. No need really IMO, as long as it's not in your pocket junk doesn't get stuck in the end and having that silly cover swinging around was spoiling my aim.

Been a while since I've posted! Just wanted to say I purchased a wooden stem from Ed's TNT and love it. He was also very helpful in ordering! Excellent product and awesome service. Definitely should be part of anyone's Solo setup! The ability to use it in downstems is fantastic as well.
