I actually blow into the mouthpiece lowering the temp which in turn creates another cycle - once that is completely finished hit it again.

Sounds like a good tip thanks. I also don't agree with the butane taste when you hit it while cycling. I've never gotten a butane taste off using the iolite, just a butane smell, didn't happen every time though.

Why smoke and die, when you can vape and fly?
I'm sitting on the veranda, with my iolite, happily vaping. My wife comes and sits down next to me.

I say, "I love you." She says, "Is that you or the iolite talking?"

I say, "It's me talking to the iolite."

Hai_Rypo_T'head,
Howdy everyone,

I've had my iolite for just over a year now and use 2-5 times a week and after reading the posts here I'm not sure I even have the same unit.

I've never had any kind of butane smell from it ever. Not even a little. It starts producing vapor pretty quickly and gives me pretty thick vapor after around 3 minutes. I do have to click it a few times for it to fire up but usually that's because I am too impatient to let the butane circulate.

One problem I do have with the iolite is cleaning. I can clean the area with the mouthpiece pretty easily but I can't really clean the area around the pin. This is a problem as I would like to be able to take it with me from the US to Europe(Amsterdam and Copenhagen) but as you can't really clean the area around the pin there is still residue inside that can be sniffed out by dogs. I have been thinking of buying a MFLB and just tossing it in the trash before I leave for the US but that seems like a lot of money to use.

However for home smoking or local traveling the iolite works out pretty well for me.

Welcome to the forum. :)

Well, you're just reading the wrong posts.

The vast majority of owners haven't. It's designed to process the butane without leakage, and just as butane can't escape a flame intact, it can't survive the catalytic process either. If any butane escapes during operation, it's finding a way out other than through the heat chain, and is defective.

gives me pretty thick vapor after around 3 minutes
Some would argue that no iolite can produce 'thick' vapor, and that's just a subjective opinion about vapor density. I've even heard the iolite criticized as ineffective due to thin vapor hits, but effectiveness has nothing to do with whether a vape provides big/thick hits or not. As long as it's working, the iolite does the job just fine, as long as you aren't looking for higher temps.

I don't really have any tips on cleaning. The iolite doesn't normally get a lot of buildup that needs to be cleaned, but staining is a problem.

max,
Yeah, the butane scent is a sign of an unhealthy Iolite. I've had two pass through my hands, an original unit which always stunk and always had problems, and a white V2 unit which never stank a bit and always clicked on at the first attempt. Thanks to the forum member who shall remain unnamed for selling me that second one at a great price, my friend uses that Iolite on the daily and loves it.

"Thick" vapor is indeed super subjective. I do remember my second Iolite delivering what could be considered quite satisfying hits when it had a full bowl pack of finely ground.

If you draw on the tube while the heat is cycling you will almost always get a butane taste and smell.

in my experience, this is 100% FALSE.

Really? Maybe im mistaking scent for taste...I have to pay more attention. Now I just realized my unit is going through gas alot faster than usual. Most times, I get about 5 session on a full tank but recently that was reduced to about 3 or 4. Anyone else having this issue?

Anybody know if there are replacement bowls available for the Iolite or is it built into the unit?

My unit was very dirty so I used some simple green (wonderful degreaser) to clean and ended up letting it sit in the bowl for a few days (i soak a lot of my glass in simple green and they are cleaned instantly as long as you wash them out with warm water) but in this case the simple green seemed to take some finish off of the bowl (it is now more of a dull silver color) and I get a funny taste whenever I use my Iolite.

I hate this because I really love(d) my unit and had very few issues. I had used simple green before to clean the bowl, screen, etc but have never had these issues.

Anybody have suggestions? Thanks

A big shout out to tdavie...FC member and reviewer.
This guy just donated these two functioning Iolites to be given to two members of the Tucson MMJ low income group. One unit was given to it's new owner about an hour ago, and the other goes to it's new home on Monday.
A local member of the AZ Cannabis society has donated 1 gram of primo meds to each of the two patients, to attempt to match tdavie's generosity! :peace:
Edit;
tdavie also paid the postage on these two donated units. What a guy!
This was amazing generosity! Thanks t! :)

I'm a non practicing medical doctor who was an engineer before he went to med school. These days, I guess you can call me a medical scientist. It's my nature to try things over and over again (repeatability) before I decide that anything is generally true.

The optimizer helps. A couple weeks ago, I noticed during a cleaning that when I dropped the optimizer into 90% ethanol that the alcohol immediately boiled off of the metal. This was after I had dropped the bowl and several parts of the (modular) tube into the same container. The optimizer definitely retains heat.

This lead to me going through several trials of testing the Iolite in a couple different configurations, using a couple different types of thermal leads.

My general conclusion is that iolite w/ optimizer takes an additional 1-2 cycles to heat the chamber to 375+F. Once it gets to that temperature, the presence of the optimizer means much faster temperature recovery on the reheat cycle, after the initial warm-up. With my current fuel, it takes between 3-4 reheat cycles to get it back up over 375F without the optimizer. With the optimizer, between 1-2 cycles.

I've been weighing my ABV, but just realized a couple days ago that my scale is not accurate enough and inadequate for this purpose,

I haven't been able to figure out a way to get my thermal leads into the chamber between the optimizer and the bottom of the heating chamber. I suspect that there is an inordinate amount of heat trapped there simply because the caked on resin is harder to scrape out.

Will report more later, but the notion that the optimizer is useless is not fully considered. I would venture a guess as to say that the optimizer greatly increases consumption efficiency.

Not sure if this has been answered yet, I don't really feel like going through 140 pages of forum, but does anyone know if theres a difference between the newer iolite (iolite 2?) and the old one? All I see is a different design on the cover part. Its like, 60$ more on amazon and i was wondering which one I should buy - or just get the WISPR. I need the vape for stealthiness, portability, and scentless (or something not smelling like my medication). I to be able to use it in a movie theater, or a public bathroom, or evening a McDonalds cup and act like its a drink. Which vape out of the three can provide what I need? And please don't say MFLB, i really don't like them - no offense. :)

Thanks for any help you can provide!

PS - Money isn't an issue for the vaporizer.

I couldn't really give you an answer on the differences, but a new iolite on amazon is like 100 dolalrs, and I personally can't find the Wispr any cheaper then like 250 anywhere else.

I meant the difference between the Iolite 1 and Iolite 2
Different design on the housing is probably just to try and distance the real iolite from the Skyda ripoffs-cosmetic change only. There is no other difference. They've made several changes to the iolite in the past-no more removeable heating pin, no bottom screen, changing the screen design in the mouthpiece, but there's never been any significant change to the design as far as how it performs, or the model name. There is no iolite 1 or 2.

So do you think I should just get the (older?) iolite for 100.00 USD? instead of the newer one for 150.00? Both would be from a seller that provides a warranty. :D

My unit seems to have finally just stopped working Ive tried venting refilling multiple times and there is no longer butane flowing when the unit is turned on.

Is there anything else to try to get the unit working again or is it best to just start the warranty process?

sometimes the jet gets clogged by impurities in the butane (this is why some folks pay 6 bucks a can for "Vector" 5X filtered)
Fill unit.
wait 25-30 minutes.
turn unit upside down... mouthpiece aimed to ground... wait about 30 seconds and try switching the butane on.
Final try- lay unit indoors, but in the light ray from a window for 5 minutes, and repeat above step.

troubleshooting
-does the switch engage(click into position clearly)?
-are you certain that the butane is in the unit... is the filling valve clear?

While reading this last post I was looking at my Iolite, in an attempt to help elixor.
I came to the realiztion that maybe the reason that the hits dont provide such thick vapor is because the air flow was too fast... cooling the chamber slightly.
I never throw parts out.. and I opened a drawer of old pieces. I found an older tube and mouthpiece from an NO2.
Photoon2011-09-13at1042.jpg

I found a new appreciation for the Iolite today... the tube takes me a few inches further from the harsh "right out of the oven" blast... and the mouthpiece restricted my ability to draw just enough to allow me to get very nice vapor!

I still am not a fan of Iolites "on again off again" shut down system!

Heat is supposed to help it get unclogged, from what I hear. Put it on top of your fridge or under your pillow or something, it might help.

1st) Press fill valve to purge tank.

2nd) Fill with quality butane until there is sprayback. If there is immediate sprayback the fill valve is not properly engaged. Do not use almost empty cans of gas.

3rd) Wait five minutes to allow IO to reach ambient tremperature. Waiting 25-30 minutes is completely unnecessary.

4th) Fill chamber with heat pin loosely with dry, finely ground herb.

5th) Throw switch. When you hear hiss, press igniter button. Look at side to confirm ignition. It should be blue then become orange after a few seconds.

6th) Wait until initial heating cycle ends. Draw ssssllllllooooowwwwwwlllyyy and enjoy.

wunner, sounds like you have a wonky unit.
Please get a rma, and have it checked out.
"burnt gas rises in a cloud from the finned side" is not normal.
I know I wouldn't want to use it if it made me feel unsafe.
That is why I don't use MFLB, using batts, and unable to easily use one handed...
CO2 & H2O from burning butane does not sound scary.
