I been creepin. I'm a noob dabber and I think I need help deciding between some of the previously mentioned budget pieces for my dab rig to be. All I can do is "research mode" until I get paid... I made a list of considerations for my application, sweet right? or just go to the links if you don't feel like consulting lol
  1. Under $40 (shipping to California)
  2. Upright (vertical end piece)
  3. Maybe I'm naive, but I want it to hit smooth, dense, and delicious, like a buttery-velvet mack truck. That gives you wings. My priorities: potency (mostly density?) > smoothness (ease of inhale) > taste
  4. Ease of cleaning is kind of important - dome percs and tree percs with a dome are a PITA imo
  5. Standard issue oil rig accessories are no factor - I have my own universal reclaimer/nail rig already
  6. Female end preferred for external perc in the future, not a deal breaker. 14mm or 18mm
  7. Bowl/nail comfortably away from face
  8. One veteran dabber/budtender I talked to swears that everybody over-diffuses with both air and water - wasting to reclaim, sacrificing potency and taste.
I think there's sense to that notion (that diffusion and potency are inversely proportional) though to what degree idk. Considering this rig will be oil only, no reclaim will be wasted, and I want full lungs of dense smoke/vapor I can hold for 20sec w/out coughing, I think more H20 diffusion and a very modest vapor chamber will produce the desired results! I've boiled it down to 4 that meet the above criteria: (All but the first link have been posted previously in this thread.)

Now all I have to do is decide. Given my hypothesis (in pink), and a small nod to the budtender, the link with the showerhead is the most logical but I've never owned a HC piece and I JUST WANT ONE. Like everything else I've never had.

What are your preferred levels of percolation and air volume (and ice?) for a dabbing rig? Am I missing any obvious considerations for finding the best <$40 solution?

Welcome to FC @xRUFUSx excellent first post might I add as well! About your choices. I say if you want a hc get a hc, so cross off the lousy matrix, 4-hole downstem, and D020 (not too close for dabs, btw). So your left with the double hc tube, and the blue hc. It's fantastic for dabs, even has a dimple on top to put your concentrate!

My D020 arrived today! (I wasn't expecting it?)

Started level 4 on my SOLO.
This thing is like WOW!
Right away I reduce to level 3!
My other bubblers 4 however 3 was more than enough!
STOCK GonG 18mm as well! (thank you @Stu)

So Cheap?
Crazy well made quality?

LOTUS trials next week.

D020 will be getting some use!

If your concentrate is properly purged and made safely, then you almost always want to minimize diffusion with dabs & the 4-hole bubbler would likely be best.
Some people however buy/make large quantities of wax that isn't very high quality. It's usually harsher, dark colored (more plant), and less potent. This is the kind of oil that I don't mind a lot of diffusion because I'm usually taking an extra large dab of it anyway.

So unless you take large dabs, I'd go with the removable mouthpiece bubbler.

P.S. Don't worry about holding in vapor for 20 seconds.
What's really more effective for absorption is taking very deep breaths, where your lungs are constantly & slowly expanding (when compared to just holding it in statically)

ataxian - I was waiting for your report on the D020. Now I'll pull the trigger! Please tell how high you recommend filling with water for optimum performance. I prefer zero chug from my pieces - how does it pull? I love the small size of the can! Thanks for all you do for us in the name of science and pleasure!

I used my accessories with this guy and tomorrow I want to try my new ASH COLLECTOR with it!

So many set ups are possible.
Low drag with the D020 so start with one level down from your usual setting on your vaporizer!

I broke out some INDICA FLOWERS!
This thing will be great for DABBING SHATTER as well!

Thanks! and yes a HC is in my future, and if I had one now, I'd probably be using it for everything and loving every pillowed lung-full. My next flower-combustion rig will be at least 2xHC for sure. Nice link, I didn't see that <$30 version of that piece.

My lungs want that level of diffusion for dabs, but I only have access to $$$$ dispensary concentrates, and I'm very concerned that every smidge of unnecessary percolation will hurt my wallet. I've accidentally blasted through $25 of wax (.5g of dank) in one sitting :( Without max efficiency and a plan, dabbing will be "that thing rich stoners do." I'm aiming for more like $5/day.

I concur with your puff science logic. The 4 hole bubbler is the most sensible choice (in regards to max dabbing efficiency, <$40, and stuff previously mentioned), and given the cost-prohibitive nature of dispensary concentrates, its a must for me. Dabbing bubbler shopping challenge: solved!

Don't worry HC, I still need you for flowers!

When you use the D020, can you see vapor build up in the main chamber? I have the same question about the "four hole bubbler". With some pieces I've seen similar to that one you can't really see what's going on due to the placement of the mouthpiece. IME, being able to see vapor production can be very useful to noobs.

Better control of the quality!

I know a little off-topic ataxian and sorry in advance to put you on the spot but do you have any recommendations for tutorials or guides on easy ways to make concentrates? Concentrates are not available to me where I live (not even basic hash) but I've been extremely interested in it for the last few months! Would love to give it a shot at home.

So easy to make your own wax!
I use BHO because I get really good flavor profiles. Vacuum purging is important for the way I make it.
There is no right or wrong way to make it. Just many different ways.
YOUTUBE videos are full of information on the subject.
There are a lot of stupid videos you'll need to skip.
I use top colas to make wax.
Many use sugar leaves.
If it's a hassle for you just vaporize flowers and forget about it!
Good well purged blond or gold shatter is like caviar!
With the right tools and method it's pretty basic and easy to make!

Thanks a lot! I'm definitely going to check it out and do some major research. I used to smoke in highschool, so it's been a good decade since i got back to it. Now I'm learning about all this new stuff that I have never heard about until a few months ago like oils- blows my mind.

In CALIFORNIA the Medical Cannabis Laws are making way for a alternative more natural way to medicate! The Cannabis is not only better the tools are amazing!

Youtube of the Mobius Reti - of which the D020 is a clone. The circular motion of the bubbles is awesome.
I can't even place an order for 2 more days, but I think a video is in order for the 4 hole bubbler.

The only way (I think) to know which bubbler is most efficient for dabs is to dab a few grams on each, compare the rate of reclaim, reflect on the characteristics of hits and qualities of highs, and re-assess.

If I was making my own oil, I would grab either the (Single HC medium perc, medium vapor chamber, gooseneck mouthpiece), or this (HC perc bubbler conversion thingy) that SSVUN~YAH recommended. And one of those <$20 HC percs to play with.

To be fair, while I wouldn't call it a clone, I'd certainly say its a knockoff...
The form factor is certainly similar, and I can't really see a reason they'd do diagonal slits on a shower head if they weren't trying to do a möbius knockoff...

It would be mind blowingly awesome if it was an actual reti perc (nested shower heads with opposite direction diagonal slits), but that's a lot to ask of such a budget piece.

Is there anyone who has/had the D020 and also has/had a möbius reti?

I'd be interested to know how they compare (drag and diffusion wise, I know the workmanship will be better on the möbius)

I've been tossing up whether to throw down the cash in a D020, given how similar it looks to a möbius ion.

I can't seem to find it with decent shipping to Australia, everything I've seen is approx $45 including shipping, not massively expensive, but if I can't find it for like $35 max, I'm thinking I'll just keep the cash and put it towards something more fancy I've got my eye on...

@Fredrick McGuire I paid only $28 for the D020 Bubbler and its better than a $180 piece I have.
My wife and I were blown away at the quality of this piece?
The glass was thicker than the US piece. (7mm vs. 5mm)

Like the first "Knock off" wood working tools that were garbage a few years ago that are now well made.
The glass work is improving as well.
They have some more design work to do however the Chinese are getting better all the time.
Continuous improvement is in the works.
AUSTRALIANS, AMERICANS and EUROPEANS are consulting many business in ASIA.

I believe the prices are low now however in 10 years or less they will be a lot more.

If you have the real deal stay with it.

For people like me who want what you have for a fraction of the cost it's worth it!

Just cause I like posting vids :) Here is the first of the Aliex bubs I got, the smaller HC paired with a M&M tech showerhead A/C and lotus. It's quite the combo, and though I am holding it by the base in the vid so you can see the percs, I usually hold it by the can, and it feels very stable in the hand.
