Ok so for the mouth piece, it is built so that you can insert what ever filter you want.

Activated carbon, wet cloth, ceramic, it does not matter what it is, if it fits you can use it.

That is why it is designed that way.


Testing the 8

Battery levels (averaged over three sessions of three runs each)
Start (charged): 4.42v/4.40v
After 1 load: 3.85v/3.82v
After 2 loads: 3.65v/3.68v
After 3 loads: 3.52v/3.54v
Ran one 4 load..unit shut down after 4 minutes and never made it to target temp: 2.89v/3.20v

In sum: can't wait for the production unit. This is a winner (assuming some tweaking will be done). And we all know that G will bust his ass (or somebody's ass) to make it right.

It feels good in the hand and is easy to control and read even for us old farts. A black version would, of course, be extra cool.

As with all these type units there will be a learning curve, but if I can do it.....

Wasn't too keen on the modular mouthpiece. By itself with a screen allowed for shaking of contents which helped the vape.

G-instead of the piece with the two screens, how about something along the lines of a porous ceramic insert? Could be soaked in water (or liquid of choice) for cooling and flavor.

I'll be passing the "torch" to OF tomorrow. Let the technical gobbledegook begin!

It's a good thing those were imr batteries! Regular lithiums would be in trouble if they were overcharged that much... damage occurs after 4.25v...

Can you test out your charger? Check what voltage it gives with no batteries on it. Then next time you charge keep checking the batteries every 5 min or so, if you see them rise above 4.20v take them off :2c:

Good point. 4.4 will be serious problems for some types. I'm not even sure IMRs like it. SC, you're using the factory charger from your Persei, right? I've never tried mine except to look into the single/dual channel issue (took one apart in fact....), I use my FW-188 instead. But it seem like it's worth checking out the charger??

Good point. 4.4 will be serious problems for some types. I'm not even sure IMRs like it. SC, you're using the factory charger from your Persei, right? I don't know, I've honestly never seen a meter that inaccurate and your other numbers seem right on the money so I'd still try use a different charger if you have one, test it just to be sure this one is running hot too.

I have two of the chargers, 1 from a persei and 1 from a v2, and even though one of mine overcharges to 4.25 they both read 4.19-4.20 without batteries...

EDIT: Oh I'll check my wf-188... 4.75 on both channels, so it's definitely higher but not 5.6 high...

Sure was. FW's were WWII German fighters, not battery chargers. Looks like today is going to be my day for stupid mistakes. This morning I called Jam Pam instead. Hey, I'm getting most of the letters and all the numbers right.....

I don't know, I've honestly never seen a meter that inaccurate and your other numbers seem right on the money so I'd still try use a different charger if you have one, test it just to be sure this one is running hot too.

I have the same two chargers (persei & V2) and they read 4.20 and 4.19 without batteries. Guess my MM is ok.

Got that boss, my suggestion was more along the lines of you providing the ceramic option.

Well we will have the ceramic inserts if that is what you mean, but the system is set up for a the filtration system.

You can purchase 1sq/cm and 1sq/in samples off of eBay but it is very delicate. I have shattered many showing others that it has the resistance of a rubber ball...a small squeeze and poof.

It is really neat stuff to work with. I had a 4"x4"x1/2" slab that you could hold over a gas stove with your hand....no heat transfer at all.

Set that piece on the counter gently and it cracked into five shards....

You can purchase 1sq/cm and 1sq/in samples off of eBay but it is very delicate. I have shattered many showing others that it has the resistance of a rubber ball...a small squeeze and poof.

It is really neat stuff to work with. I had a 4"x4"x1/2" slab that you could hold over a gas stove with your hand....no heat transfer at all.

Set that piece on the counter gently and it cracked into five shards....

Thats the issue, now if we can mold this to our needs thinking maybe possible. you never know this is why we research.

They claim to be able to mold....if it was in a rigid chamber I bet you'd be just fine. ZERO chance of combustion as well....could lead to a tight fit. I'm wondering now if it was in a tight sleeve and cracked if it would turn to dust or reasonably retain its shape....hell asbestos isn't pretty either but it's functional.

The organic RF polymer looks like it was purpose built for this type of apparatus.

Cost is the issue bro, we already are at the $199 mark with the unit alone, working on making it cost effective. Since the LCD screen and all the advancements we are building into it, and also future upgrades we have planned this thing will end up costing more then a Lambo if i had my way with it. haha.

This stuff is expensive and delicate so, if it could be used, you would use a small amount in a layer between the metal of the unit and the ceramic bowl where it is protected and out of the airpath.

We are going to research it guys now get on it, never know how we can use it, maybe a shield to keep batteries grime heat never know,

Today I got the 8 prototype from SC along with his best wishes and some useful instructions. I'm still having trouble keeping it running (it seems like it times out and starts cooling off), I'm sure I'll sort that out. I've run 3 bowls so far, along the formula SC developed. About .3 grams of fairly fine grind (two inch four piece SC grinder), enough to barely cover the post in the center. The post seems to be the source of the heat as you can see below (story coming....). There's a tiny hole in the top and four similar ones spaced around the post just below the top. These let air in from below, everything else seems sealed. The bowl itself looks like aluminum with thin machine screws through the bottom for the heater leads and the temperature sensor near the center of the bottom (buried in the metal). There's a ceramic plate in the bottom covering the heater which you can see through the center hole when it's on. A rubber gasket seals the top of the bowl to the body, you can see this in the photo below.

The 3 runs went fairly well. I'm using some nice 18% Blue Dream but the hits are a little on the thin side, something like Iolite tends to be. Given they're roughly the same size, construction and temperature (Iolite might have a better flow path) this makes sense at least to me. It gets cache'd faster though and while the dose is effective it's not all that noteworthy. I intend to add some bubble hash to the mix in the next round to liven things up like I would normally do in Iolite. AVB looks OK, not quite as uniform as MFLB but about the right color. I agree with SC that indicated 320 to 330 degrees seems about right.

However, and IMO this is a huge however, the SOB turned itself on and ran away! I turned it off (not always easy to do for me yet, but pushing the button a few times confirmed it was off (it takes 5 or so rapid pushes to wake it up). I'd gone through "off" displayed and shift from orange to blue and was sure everything was Jake. Then I smelled it. It didn't combust since there was no draw, but I bet if I'd pulled on it I'd have got bit. The display was blank when I pushed the button (overheated) and so I pulled the battery. Hotter than the hinges on the gates of hell as they say. Way more than the 330 it was last set to. You can see in the photo what happened:



I'll let it cool off, clean it out and press on with testing as best I can, but clearly it's not a good plan to leave batteries in it until this is understood.....

BTW, if anyone wonders if DubC got enough oil in this the other day? He did. You can see it 'everywhere' peeking through the slots. I intend to try some various concentrates, but I think in smaller loads.

Edit: For those taking notes, this puppy is no slouch for sure. It's pulling about 20 Watts (Evolution level power) to heat up to temperature. It was running about 2.7 Amps at a bit over 7.4 Volts when I checked. IMO quite respectable. No wonder it can get so hot....

And now that it's cool and I've emptied it out, it smells mighty nasty in there, time for some serious cleaning before we press on. The electronics seems to be working normally again. Retracing my steps I'm positive I had it off. Pushing the button when it's on a few times brings up "off" in the window when the button is blue (heater off). Holding it down a few seconds shuts the power off and pushing the button less than five times has no effect. Five presses turns back to standby with "on" showing which changes to temperatures and ramps up when the button is pressed again. Same basic deal as shutting it off.
