The HI

Second session with the HI, this time through water. I didn't get the stainless steel insert for the 14mm glass turbo tube so I am using the HI through water as I would my UD's. So far nothing but big rips and sweet hits. Back to testing.....

Alan contacted me within 24 hours about the hi vape. I mailed him back quickly it has been about 48 hours since then and I am still waiting for a reply. I'm getting the feeling I won't be seeing a vape for a while.

Hang in there! Day 16 in line for me. The HI might take a couple weeks but you'll be using it for years.

Let's not start getting impatient with Alan so quickly! He's a one man band and he's clapping those cymbals as quickly as his hands can clap. It's not unreasonable in any business to wait a couple days for a response.

^ For sure CHEI. We are all a demanding bunch here at FC. I'm sure Alan's having to deal with multiple custom orders - all this while still refining his designs and developing a new manufacturing process.
This is a brand new, bespoke, hand-crafted product, so let's just be a little patient. :peace:

You tell 'em mom. ;)

Back in ancient times there was a very popular log vape that at one point people were willing to wait up to four months to get. Now, a couple of years later, there are more and better options, but you can only speed up the manufacturing process for a log vape so much, without compromising reliability and wood finish. And hiring a bunch of low paid workers to crank 'em out fast isn't the answer either. Overall quality goes down while manuf. cost goes up. So get your order in now, while the waiting list is short. Because I see either the price or the wait time going up (maybe both), as time goes on.

I totally agree max, the quality on log vapes, the HI in particular, since this is the specific thread for it, is tremendous, and well worth the wait.

I am fairly patient. I think it takes patience just to have found out about this vape and not buying one on a whim. Now it truely becomes a test of my patience as all of you are witnesses. I become exciting and intrigued by various ways of vaping now (used to be smoking). I once had a seven chamber water pipe and worked in a headshop selling gasmask bongs.

Changing the subject I have brought up two possibly useful questions
Just curious, what kinds of concentrate can you vape in the HI if at all?
Is the HI good for sharing with one or two people?

High-surface area non-melty hash works best in log vapes (as far as not making a mess goes)
Kief, sand hash, caviar like hash, shiva crystals, etc

With the HI's variable temp you can crank it up and really do concentrates well compared to the most traditional log vapes.

You can use more melty concentrates but you might need a cleaning afterwards if you use too much. Luckily a log vape stems are extremely easy to clean.

Also comparing to traditional log vapes, they sometimes required a little downtime between hits so groups weren't the easiest thing, but all the new designs (ud, crz, and the HI) can basically be hit back to back without major heat loss.
Great for groups.

Great for groups.

This is what I am curious about. In the past it has been said that the log vape is good for up to 2 people. And that was based on the prior design with more metal. I assume that its wasnt good for larger groups due to heat loss from the constant bombardment of fresh room temp air cooling the heat exchanger with its metal mass. And the warmup time was at min 30 minutes. Now we seem to have a log vape with less metal mass and higher temps and shorter heatup time. I cant wait to see how it does in large groups.

Whats not to love?

I hope it wont be much longer b4 Alan gets back to me so I may be amazed by the new design.

And fellow FC members while many of us might recall the PD thread concerning where along the list everyone is at. Lets try to avoid that mess and be patient, try using what your gonna use in the HI in whatever vape you currently have now or however you partake and chill till yours arrives and then post your rave reviews and love for said vape. Give Alan time to create his masterpieces and put his all in his design. As you have seen on here he does create many one of a kind beautifulpieces.

For me, the logs are a pain in the ass due to the slow airflow making it take forever for a group of three to get hi. This vape should alleviate that with its bigger bowl and increased airflow.

I do apologize for not being as responsive as I should. I'm trying to keep too many things going at one time. It is tough trying to figure everything out and getting it all made. Deciding when to order more parts and then not doing it soon enough. Was sort of waiting to see if any problems developed with the variable voltage supplies as they are very new. I'm unfortunately almost out of them and it will be a little while before I get some more. Guess that will give me some time to turn wood and glass. Thanks again for being patient. It will definitely be worth the wait. I will try to make it as fair as possible to all.

Had an opportunity to use the HI in a party situation last weekend. There were 2 HI's and around 10 people. It worked very well with several roasting tubes available. People were doing very well with concentrates too. There is some stirring required, but that just exposes more surface area to the hot air.

Achieving the best possible air flow in the roasting tube has been at obsession for me. I think the roasting tubes play a more important part than the vaporizer which merely provides hot air. Although, good air flow in the vaporizer is important too.

What kinda bowls are you using now? The UD bowls, or did you get some other tube(s) from Alan?

And could you perhaps post a group photo here or in the UD or CRZ thread, since we're no longer allowed to have a comparison thread?

mod note: Comparison threads have never been allowed.

I am using Alan's standard 10mm glass stem with silicone sleeve for dry hits and Alan's 14mm gong all glass stem with one of Dave's 3/8" silicone sleeves as my glass attachment. I will grab a picture of the three units this weekend.

*Edited to include HI Review*

First off I want to say Alan has been a pleasure to purchase from and really took the time to answer all my questions. I understand he is busy launching a new product and it takes time to keep up with orders, Emails, ETC.....

My Hi arrived beautifully packaged and with all the attachments I wanted. I got the VV power supply, the 14mm all glass gong turbo tube, and a 10mm glass and silicone sleeve turbo tube. I plugged the unit in, set the VVPS to halfway in the red zone and in 5 minutes I was producing clouds using the 10mm glass and silicone turbo tube. Turns outs halfway on the red may have been a little high as I cached the stem in two hits. Boy were they two thick and tasty hits though :ko: I hit it exactly the way I would my UD with the glass and silicone stem and produced clouds equivalent to what I would produce with my UberTwig.

My next test for my new toy was with water filtration and the 14mm all glass gong turbo tube paired with a UD silicone sleeve to create distance between the heating core and the flower. For this test I used a standard 12 volt power supply instead of the VVPS Alan provided to see how the HI would perform at 12 volts. This is where I was able to discover the true difference between the HI and UD. At 12 volts the HI runs a fair amount hotter than the UD. With no markings on the VVPS it was hard to understand exactly where I was in terms of volts. The standard 12 volt PS solved this and allowed me to have a baseline to experiment from. With my four arm tree bubbler, and the 14mm attachment Alan provided I was able to produce huge clouds only comparable to those I have produced with my two Ubertwigs and LSV. The flavor through water is also very pleasant and once again is very familiar of the experience I get from using my UD with water filtration.

My next test with the HI was direct draw using my CRZ stem and the standard 12 volt PS. The heat form the 12 volt PS proved to be too much for the restricted air path of direct draw with the SS stem and I accidentally combusted  Surprised the hell out of me, and after not combusting for nearly seven months it really made me cough something fierce. After taking a break and drinking a big glass of southern sweet tea, I tried the direct draw from the CRZ stem again and using the VVPS was able to find a happy medium to vape at and get some nice, tasty hits comparable to those I would get with my CRZ.

Conclusion,

1. The Hi is an innovative and unique log vape that has the ability to operate at a wide range of temperatures using the VVPS. Alan has also created a very nice assortment of turbo tubes that I believe anyone would be able to find something that suited their needs.

2. The HI is hot. At 12 volts it runs hotter than any other log vape I have tried and once you find a happy medium with the VVPS you will enjoy using this beauty. A VVPS may not be ideal for everyone's needs but the 5 minute heat up time will allow non 24/7 operation to be possible while not taking up so much time.

The UD was used more for comparison in this review because it shares the most similarities with the HI out of the log vapes I have tried. When using my CRZ stems the HI performed beautifully once I figured out a sweet spot on the VVPS.

To the Forum moderators...I tried very hard to word this review in a way that would not offend anyone, break rules, or promote either of the above mentioned vapes. I very much wanted the review to be based on the similarities and differences of the HI to some of the other log vapes I have experienced. I hope this review has been helpful to my fellow members and that the Forum moderators find it acceptable. I am here to share ideas with people who share similar interests to my own and help fellow members if I can. I hope everyone will enjoy these photos of my new HI with its two new best friends ;)
