Hello @Stinky , Please see my response right above this. I do not have an ETA as of right now, but I assure you this is our priority. I will update on here with new developments as they come along. I hope you guys can understand it is taking long because we don't want to bandaid the issue, we are looking for exact cause to determine proper solutions. Thank you -Emily

Thanks for the response, I really appreciate the help. Is there a particular retailer you will be selling the cooling units through?

As of right now, the defective ones we have back in our hands are all from the same batch so we are looking into this as its looking like it was a batch issue.

How do we tell if we have one of the units from the bad batch?

I recently bought a second Alternate for my cousin as mine has had no issues what so ever and is frankly the best budget vape money can buy right now (although a Vapman could definitely compete with good technique). Was wondering if @Vivant knew about these and whether or not they're compatible with the alternate. http://www.australianvaporizers.com.au/store/crafty-mighty-easy-flow-glass-adapter-18mm.html

EDIT: To people worrying about the plastic issue I'm pretty sure it's asked and answered at this point - Vivant are addressing the issue and have been very transparent up to this point. Have some faith and patience - I'm certain their QC process just got a lot more rigid so this can only mean a better overall product/future products.

who knows what health issues could come from breathing in random melting plastic

I'm not allowed and won't discuss the health implications part, but if the plastic is really PC (Polycarbonate, which honestly would be a rather strange choice in the first place for that application) then you can expect it to be full of BPA (Bisphenol A, the PC monomer*) some plasticizers (ex: Phthalates but not in PC), dyes, as well as other agents to improve UV resistance and other properties.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycarbonate#Thermal_degradation
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasticizer

(*polymerization is never complete and you still get monomers trapped in the resin and those can leach out with time, same for the plasticizers and other agents)

PS: to those having melting mouthpieces, I'm tempted to tell you what DaVinci support told me when I complained about the faint background silicone taste in my Ascent: "then don't use it at high temperatures" (gawd did I hate this answer! :disgust:)

Our materials of plastic are as follows: Glass Filled Polycarbonate is used on the exterior of the device, the internals of the device is Ultra High Heat Polyetherimide. Both are safe to use so I would hope this will ease your worries and concerns.

Thank you!!

That was what vivant said about the materials used on Reddit. If you look at the teardown on puffitup you can tell by color which parts are which. Polyetherimide looks to be the heating element or the heater casing.

I think they don't going to fit, crafty/mighty have a bigger bowl. But the design of this WPA is really good.
i saw head to head bowl comparison on reddit, here is photo that @420vapezone took.

That's a damn shame - thought maybe I could get away with changing the mouthpiece out for that WPA and negate any worry (not that the units I've used have had troubles - multiple sessions at max temp back to back until battery died and no signs of degradation.

Edit: Anyone willing to try the WPA for science regardless? :D FOR SCIENCE!:science:

Ascent: "then don't use it at high temperatures"
Really? Sad to hear sth like this. Then why they not regulated the temps of the unit.
I think there should be a verification for (portable) vapes, so costumers can be sure that they vape no toxic gases and the unit is safe to use.
Back2topic:
@Vivant So do you work on a completly new vaporizer or do you improve/upgrade the Alternate with e.g. other materials or s.th. like this?

Sorry if this has been addressed but I was wondering if there was any news on Capsules and Spare Mouthpieces?

I for one, love my Alternate! I'm not a fan of plastic either but the Crafty/Mighty completely changed my mind on the issue. I have had a few vapes in the past that had plastic issues, melting and taste/smell but I haven't noticed anything off with the Alternate. I don't use mine for very long at a time or typically on high temps but I'm fairly confident that this is a solid vape. There has to be so much testing on temperatures and materials to make sure they can stand up to the heat, that's what vapes do, they heat up, so hopefully we can count on these companies to put out a safe product. After all, that's why most of us vape.

I've tried the boundless water adaptor and that doesn't fit. But for those who are worrying about health issues would filtering with hemp and using water help? I use mine with water much of the time.

No, i don't think water filtration does some difference but with WPA that was linked by @lemmeadem is not going through this plastic air path at all, it is bowl, screen, then glass then water tool.
Trying to implement a quick fix to mitigate any risk, right? :D I'm wondering if a solo stem/gong would sit well in the bowl? Heat retention would probably be a lot worse...

Received my replacement cooling unit from PIU yesterday. Gonna vape at temps under 400F. Hopefully this will keep it from melting again. Ordered a Dr. Dabber pen for concentrates. Not worth the risk using the Alternate for waxes.
Thanks to the fine folks at PIU for fast and awesome customer service.

What is the replacement cooling unit? Is it to replace the melted part?

Hey y'all -- It's CannaBanana !! had to make a new account. I got this around a week and a half ago. I bought through PIU. It was good to go as soon as I opened the box. No burn offs were needed. My initial thoughts after trying this was ---Holy hell this thing hits like a beast!! This thing definitely isn't Weak. It has produced amazing clouds for me and I usually stick around 350-378 F . I like how right after I received this vape everyone started having issues with melting. Well 3 days ago I noticed warping on the cooling unit and contacted PIU. Randy is an amazing person ,and had me a new top in less than 4 days. I still need to update him and let him know I received it. Anyway I just wanted to say this is a great unit and I dig it greatly BUT if this second cooling unit starts to warp I think I'll want to ask for a refund or a swap as I don't want to deal with new tops every other week. I do think this unit should be left on at 2 minutes and that's my magic number. It does get hot at the top and I feel like this is a huge contributing factor. Other than the melting , and The fairly foul few hits I ONLY got a few times last week after the bowl had been spent , everything is great. Everyone I've let try this thing loves it and the taste but as with any vape the first few hits are always the best then it gets kinda blah. Love this vape ATM and hope things work out but wanted to chime in my two cents on this little beast. Also wanted to say minus the few foul plastic like tasting dry hits I got after the bowl was spent earlier last week there was never any gross plastic taste to this thing...

This is dissapointing. So I used the Alternate this morning, first time with new replacement top. Two 3 minute sessions at 375f, back to back. Noticed the battery door was fitting loose. Low and behold there is a crack on the housing right below the usb plug. I have never dropped the device or used the USB to charge. It must have cracked from heat?
This is really starting to freak me out and worry.

my battery cover does fit kinda funny when I put it on it doesn't really want to easily slide down I usually have to slide it down and push the sides so it stays in place I guess I should mention that. If this things fails me I going to be bummed as it works to good but if it does ....

I took my EQ whip (not the vinyl tubing but the silicone tubing) put that on my alternate mouthpiece. Then I put a DDave kink proof whip over that silicone whip. After than I just connected it to a 14mm to 18mm adapter and it has worked great for a Cheap easy Alternate WPA. Works really well actually.

That's great thinking. Unfortunately they are a little too wide. They fit the Mighty though.

Made another WPA!
This time I took the Mighty filling tool and hacked/sanded it down to size. Hope you guys like it!

Do you know if it is safe to use the plastic from the filling tool right on top of the oven?

After two mouthpieces going bad, I'm now seeing cracking around the USB port in addition to a couple of fine cracks beside the bowl heading toward the battery. The unit has never been dropped.

@Vivant thoughts? Should I be concerned charging my battery via this USB port? I loved this vape, but I'm struggling to stay faithful to a device that's breaking more and more every day.

Mine cracked in exact same spot. What is going on with these vapes? I've never used the usb to charge either. Only battery swap. Never dropped either
I baby all my devices. I've already contacted PIU again. That is two times in less than a week.
