I have an original Walnut VG, and it was my first vape. I was never a fan of trying to clean the wooden bottom portion, and searched in vain for a metal bottom that would fit. (BTW, I have since learned that the bulbous filter portion at the top will screw onto any old school style screw together metal bowl or bong bowl.)

Six months of use never really gave me a handle on the technique. I combusted at least 25% of the time. The Walnut OG got relegated to The vape drawer, and I ended up using a flowermate v1t .0 for a couple of months, and that gave me a taste for what even, non combusted, ABV looked like.

2+ years of VC use(a one hitter and dugout was my constant companion for the 25 years before I got my first VG. so this was like coming home), and I feel like I have gotten enough experience with a torch to hopefully be able to master the technique of the VG. I definitely see the allure of faster, more on demand style hits.

I seem to be having trouble focusing on the flame and its position in relation to the intake with the direct input, aiming at your face style of the bat. If I make it back to the LHS before the end of the week and pick up the Sherlock, I may be posting this bat for sale here in the classifieds.

I will post a pic shortly showing a side by side of a dynavap m and the bat. In hand, I would compare the dynavap to cigarette size, and the bat to a decent-sized cigar. Still not too heavy.

I've definitely taken to the dynavap more than my VG Walnut handcarved. Part of it is the size of the bowl, too, that I don't want to commit to. Still, the VG has the traditional charm that reminds me of a much simpler (or the opposite) time. The fact that it still rips hard and works perfectly is icing on the cake.

I wish I had gotten one first or second in my vape journey, and much sooner.

Well, that's my C-Vap(that I am waiting to give away, because it is uuuuuuuuggggggllllyyyyy), and the VG Glass Bat. I also have 3 other VC's(all SS tips) with different stems, and an XMax V2 as my sole electric vape.

wow the bat is bigger than I pictured!

very, very curious to hear your review comparing the two over the next few days!

Ok, I've been trying over the last few days to see what the glass VG bat has to offer me over the last few days off....

Meh..... My best response..... I am trying, but can't seem to get a consistent hit, no matter what I try. Slow/fast draw, / slow/fast flame / speed/slow,......... Nothing is consistent.

For me. I will keeps trying for a day or 2....

For science....

Can you put a light under it so you can watch vapor start to build and get a hang on what it takes to get that? I get huge rips from a small soft flame on the handcarved.

You aren't using a torch are you? I thought vg said torches broke their glass.

you aim the flame directly on the SiC? if so, better don't. try grabbing just the heat from the torch, not the flame itself. imagine that you need only the 200c-220c temperature of the flame, and the hottest part is like 800c-900c. grab the heat you need, and change the speed of the inhaling according to this..

On further review....for science....

I still cannot get a great hit off of the Bat. I am sure it is a spatial issue unique to me, so.....

I picked up the Sherlock, at $65 I couldn't pass it up. I get much, MUCH, more consistent hits from this...

Let me say again, MUCH more... I have combusted maybe 2 times out of 20 tries Vs 12/20 with the Bat....

Again could just be me.

More to come

Could just be the soft flame difference, now that I think about it.

Is it because the load falls to the side? With the non horizontal versions, the load stays even and put, so the hot air passes through it.

Again- are you using a torch with your glass VG? They say only to use soft flame.

Was the soft flame better or worse? I’m still having inconsistent performance with mine, and I can’t tell if the torch or soft flame is better.
IMO there is no difference in the end. Both burn the same gas, at the same general rates, therefore actually produce the same total heat. Soft flame has the advantage of no 'hot spots' that can cause problems if torch types get loose on exposed glass (and locally heat it, causing a crack) and, since the flame reaction is spread out you can 'soot up' the heat exchanger with the unburned carbon from the secondary reaction (the cooler one that makes CO2, not the first that makes water vapor by burning the Hydrogen from the fuel).

Either will work the same given proper technique, which is why I don't think it really matters. IMO it's easier to use a torch flame and keep it moving than to deal with the soot issue (which can call for serious remedial action). Although I agree, waving a torch around the end of your nose can harsh your mellow.

The 'trick' to VG is, I think, to control the heat input through the hit. Once the exchanger is up to temperature you need to add heat no faster than you're using it. It's not the lighter type. Keep after it, it is very rewarding when 'done right'.

Regards to all.

Whilst I haven't used a glass bat, I would only use my coil with glass expansion of some sort.

I seem to remember the end of a glass bat is also shaped to fit a glass joint and a quick google search may confirm that?

I kinda want to pull the trigger on the Spiral Walnut Hand Carved model.

Do y'all think that the Bronze Sherlock is worth the wait till it's back in stock?

Yes. but the handcarved models are great as well. I have a teak and walnut. I like the look more compared to my classic ash, but the Sherlock is the best of the bunch imo

Has anyone here tried the aluminium bat with a torch lighter? Kinda intrigued to see how well that would work :sherlock:

As I said a bit ago, IMO there's little difference between torches and 'candle flame' lighters. However, I found the Aluminum bat to be pretty useless for serious work. It rapidly gets hot, too hot to hold on to, with very few hits. I suggest a different model. Bodies with more 'heatproof' material. Aluminum, especially in such a small package, it really a 'worst case' material choice. It conducts heat too well.

I can't imagine how painful it would be to hold a tiny aluminum thing you were pointing a torch to the side of lmao. Might be ok since the torch makes for quicker hits.

I keep meaning to use my VG since this thread has me so into it. All my other vapes hold more draw to me, plus the times I use the VG I feel like I get a weird flavor and don't feel great. Could it be the butane from the soft flame? I use good clean butane. Or maybe it's the mouthpiece like I think somebody said.

i have the same issue-I want to love the VG but if I don’t get the perfect hit I feel weird and the flavor is really funky. Changing the mouthpiece helped with the weirdest flavor issues but it’s still not this amazing flavorful hit. And when I do get a good pull I feel like I can’t recreate it.

I’m using Colibri butane, and I even tried it in a brand new lighter that has only used that butane to try to eliminate the possibility that some lingering crap butane flavor was in my other lighter.

i was reading on the VG site that some percentage of the population is more sensitive to butane, so maybe that’s the same issue you and I are having? I have no issues with using butane on my VapCaps, so being around butane is fine, but I feel like I can taste it in the VG, or at least taste something weird.

I have a stainless steel VG Bat and you can get one hit before it's so hot that you leave pieces of lip sizzling on the mouthpiece, not fun at all.

Hey, it happens. Not to put too much stock in it (and for sure don't waste time looking for me to do it again). If you post enough you're likely to connect with the occasional guy, like the blind pig. Glad you found it useful, that was of course my intent. VG can be a great vape, but some models are more flexible than others. And it does take some technique to get good, consistent results.

Thanks.

Yup. And SS is a better material from a conduction POV than Aluminum. You must hit hotter than I do, I can manage two or even 3 hits on the SS bat before having to let it cool off. OTOH a second hit on the Aluminum one without a break......

Last summer I broke my classic VG. I had been missing it recently and popped on the VG website over the weekend and happened to get lucky and catch the bronze sherlock in stock and ordered one right away.

I got it in the mail today (great quick shipping btw).

The bronze sherlock is beautiful and its got a nice weight to it.

In addition to the weight of it, I like the "top down" view you get because of the shape it has. I like this better than the eye level view I got with the classic.

Gotta find that technique again but I'm excited to have a VG back at my vape desk.

Congratulations!!! I've never heard a bad thing about the bronze sherlock. Are you using torch or soft flame?

When you say you broke your classic, how did you do that?

Hey thanks for asking because looking back, I should have been more clear since the VG is a durable vape and has a nice warranty.

By broke I mean that Im a dumbass and forgot my VG outside after a night hanging by the fire pit and then it took me a few days to find it. It was just in not great condition afterwards and I tossed it.

When I bought the VG years ago I used a soft flame with success. For quite a while now I've been using a torch though and that's what I've been messing around with tonight. I had so much success with the torch that I don't plan to even take out any soft flame lighters tbh.
