Vapman

Some things I have noticed playing with the concentrate screen.

Using a Vapman normally with herb against the sides of the crucible takes a little flame to heat things up to vapor production. The herb against the sides of the bowl absorbs some heat and slows things down in comparison to using the concentrate screen.

When using the concentrate screen the Vapman behaves a little differently with increased airflow and because herb is not resting on the surface of the crucible. Once vapor production begins the Vapman easily puts out thick vapor using the concentrate screen. Also, I found it interesting how rapid temperature changes are when using the concentrate screen. Too much flame and the entire load can be cached lickety split. Heat changes are faster than a with a Vapman normally loaded with herb. My tests have been using kief only but it is crystal clear how well this new screen will work with 'sticky type' concentrates.

I am really not into concentrates much but there is no doubt that the concentrate screen will be a beast for anyone that enjoys them. To clean the screen rub the spent residue off between your fingers and it is ready to reuse. :peace:
good to know...i have never tried concentrates, i do mess around with kief on occasion. if i do get the opportunity to dab, i want it to be with the vapman. Looking at all the e-pens that people use for concentrates seems like you would waste a lot...the bong and nail set ups look too complex for my needs. I have seen some interested dabs with log style vapes. but i would rather do it with a vapman.

Ok well after we leave @steama's house to discuss Ginger, i think we need to go to Vapehunters house and get high....
Ok, I'll have the little lady set out the air mattress' and I'll round up all my camping cot's. Anybody wanna call dib's on the Hammock's? I've got two!

Kid, but isn't charring half the fun?

I just love tinkering... :)
As much as I love tinkering / Macgyvering I can't say Charring my Vapman was "fun" while I was doing it.
I'd like to remember it as, I had a torch in my hand:science: and I was a real bad ass:rockon:! But in all honesty it scared the shit out of me:ugh:!! When a few of the edges started to turn orange and start smoking I was sure I just F#$&ed up my new toy:cry:. But now that I have done one it's like, Hey, you Need a Vapman scorched? I'm your man:cool:.

there is no doubt that the concentrate screen will be a beast for anyone that enjoys them.
Glad to hear that. For me getting concentrates are kinda hit & miss. But lately I've been having good luck, Colorado is only a couple states away. If the screens don't become available to purchase soon I may have just found a reason to buy a Yew tree Vapman!

So after a few days I'm still perfecting my technique. Most of the time my ABV comes out a nice dark brown. But it seems like maybe 1 out of every 5-7 bowls I get it a little too hot and it combusts. I'm also still experimenting with plugging the "vent" holes with toothpicks. I think I like the two holes plugged, but I'm not sure.
Last night I realized how much fun my Vapman can be with glass!

Man, that looks awesome! At first I thought, "Hey! That's my Vapman!" - hehe.

I know what you mean about it being a scary process. That's why I said it was Not for the squeamish in my original post. But after you do it once, you loose the fear and the next time is easy.

Did you sand and oil or wax the VM after charring it?

I sanded it with 600 Grit paper (per your suggestion), torched it, brushed it with a boar bristle brush, and finally gave it a light coat of boiled Linseed oil.
Cool.

I've been using finer grit sand paper lately.

800 grit at first, then Char and then 1000 to clean and smooth. Then clean with a rag and oil with food grade, unscented edible coconut oil. Buff with a rag to remove the excess oil.

By the way, you can char at different levels but I like the almost black Vapman - Stealth Black! ;)

I want to buy the wax that Seren recommended. It sounds like a better option, but I haven't tried it yet.

Steama's linseed oil looks good too!

I haven't personally had any problems using a touch of Ed's wax now and then - but I don't overdo it. I find it stops the VM drying out too much. I never apply it underneath on my Basic, or on my stems - & I tend to concentrate on the base anyhow.

A kind word of warning. Most users will want to avoid putting waxes and oils on the filter assembly piece. If you must use oil or wax use the right kind and very little. Most all oils and waxes will liquefy with heat and manifest by sweats and eventually drips down onto the screen plate where they begin to smoke. It doesn't take much oil or wax to foul this piece. I know this because I did it.

If this happens do not worry — there is a fix.
I have seen the oil sweat a bit on the stem, which I just wipe off with my finger.

I use food grade coconut oil from the health food store and I wipe most of it off anyway.

I dab it on with my fingers, let it absorbed for a minute or two and then wipe it all off - like when applying liquid wood stain.

This is why I get very little sweating.

And like Seven said, it's mostly on the outside of the body, a little on the outside of the stem and only every once in a blue moon. You may need it only once, really.

It's been working for me so far, but your warning is sound and well taken.

Soooo I found my vapman but it's been raining since I lost it. Usable?........ :/ @OF
It's dry already. It's been nice today and yesterday, just don't want to inhale somethin funky

I don't see why it shouldn't, the Linseed oil should have protected the wood.....that's one of it's functions after all.

However, if it's the classic (with mica) I'd be careful there. Mica is a natural mineral, made up of flat plates. Water can (and does) 'wick' between the plates, where it's slow to evaporate out (since there's no air flow in there). Boiling even a tiny amount to seam inside the plates (say by waving a torch around it....) will make a huge mess of the mica. If it were mine I'd put it on top of the router (or in a bag of dry rice) for several days first to be sure. Then again, I've got plenty of backup vapes to amuse me in the separation.

Good luck, great job recovering it! A true credit to you and how much you value it.

Basics don't have the linseed oil do they? I jus out underbutter on it a few times before I lost it.

Actually I just went back to fish!:bowdown:Pure luck that I found it! Blended in with all the leaves on the ground! I'll throw it in rice for a day or two and then do a full on torch. This ones real special to me now....

Take a torch and Charr the hell out of it. Nothing "Funky" will be able to survive the torch!

Hey hey, sometimes a bit of funk can be a good thing. Hahahhaaa

But I see what you mean. I agree with VAPEHUNTER. Char it. (or was it charred already?)

Also, the body is no problem, but you can torch the inside of the mouthpiece a bit to clean it then scrape the inside a bit with an Exacto Knife - which I do every once in a while (the wooden middle part, is what I'm talking about). Or dip it in alcohol or pure acetone from the hardware store - make sure it's not nail polish remover that usually has perfumes and crap added to it.

OF's rice suggestion is great too!

You should be OK to use it. Vapmans don't die easily. They're Zombie Apocalypse proof - as Mr. Melish would say... :)
