Fellow ENTs,
I wanted to share my experience with the UD vaporizer i received a couple of weeks ago. I didn't want to post too prematurely as i was afraid of not quite being used to the learning curve that most vaporizers have. I found that the UD doesn't have much of a learning curve at all. There are a few things, as with all vapes, that you have to get used to, and some things that feel as natural as can be.
When I first received my UD, i quickly unpackaged it to a bunch of UD goodies. A custom purpleheart ubertwig (picture posted a few pages back by Dave), some silicone stems, a screen replacement kit, some glass stems, a sticker, and a few other things.
Lets start with the UD itself. It came out much smaller than i expected. In fact, about 2/3rds the size that i actually thought it would be. The wood is absolutely beautiful, and after using the UD butter that came with the unit, it shines up like a beaut! The unit heated up pretty quickly, at around 20 minutes. I've left it on since i received it; every day, all day. At first I was worried about the heat due to the size of the UD. It got very hot to the touch, but never so hot that I was unable to hold it in my hand. Once the heat is maxed out after about 30 minutes, the temperature is very consistent. It stays the same temperature, every hit, all the time. This is GREAT. No matter if i'm pulling with the silicone tube, the glass tube, or a glass water-pipe/bong, it always hits hot, clean, and smooth.
Moving on to the stems. The silicone stem looks a bit, well, lackluster. It's not quite as "cool looking" as some of the tubes i've seen with some log vapes, however i think it functions great. I quickly learned that filling the tube up too much causes a bit of drag, and makes using the UD a bit tough on the lungs/breathing. However, as soon as i dialed in exactly how much herb to load into each stem, i couldn't believe how efficient it was. At first, from the tip of the tube to the tube's screen, i was filling up about half of the free space. I soon learned that filling up the stem bowl with 1/4th of the free space, or less, resulted in super efficient extraction of the vapor.
Next, the glass stem. This stem is much nicer on the eyes. Its all glass up until the part that connects to the UD itself, which is made of silicone. This silicone is much thinner than the silicone used on the actual full silicone tubes. The result of this is less drag/air restriction, which makes the hit feel much smoother. I really like this tube, however, i feel that the silicone tube does a better job at fully extracting all of the cannabinoids from the herb. Sometimes i like to switch back and forth between the glass tube and the silicone tube. I also think that this is due to the different shape of the screen (flat instead of dome shaped.)
On both tubes, after about 2-3 hits, i take a poker, and stir up the tube to keep the extraction even. One problem i was having was when i removed the tube from the UD, the herb would sit on the unit's screen, rather than staying packed up inside the tube itself. The very simple solution was to turn the UD upside down, tap it a couple times, THEN remove the tube from the UD while still holding it upside down. This typically keeps the UD nice and clean and fresh. My only concern is anything falling down through the core itself and getting gunked up in there. I suppose time will tell for this.
When paired with a water-bong, this thing is a dream. I purchased the airizer q elbow adapter, which fits into an 18mm joint on my bong, and plugs directly into the UD silicone stem, which then plugs directly into my UD. it's a very simple solution to using this vape with a water bong.
As far as size of hits goes, this thing is a monster. MANY times i've let my friends use it, and MANY times this week i've heard, "holy shit, i didn't even think i got anything at first." directly after blowing out an enormous cloud. Often followed by a "where do i get one of these?" or a "wow, that was TASTY!!!"
All in all, with the amazing convenience of loading stems (just suck up the herb!), the 24/7 always on, the awesome size, the amazing aesthetics, excellent performance, and great customer service: I couldn't be happier with my UD. My volcano is already collecting a layer of dust.
Dave, thank you again.
Happy UD owner,
