TV Shows - General Discussion

Haha yeah my roommate likes it a lot, but didn't know anything about the games at all either, I could not get interested or invested though, something about it really irks me, I don't think it's just the animation style which I actually despise for some reason lol I'm sure it's good character and storytelling, I just don't think I care much for the characters or story they are telling?? And I appreciate the new animation style, that definitely looks like work went into it, but nevertheless I just don't like it

I'll admit I'm not an animation connoisseur. Only watched Scavangers Run and Edgerunners (based on an actually good video game). Didn't really care for the Edgerunners anime art style but the story was wonderful.

I dunno. I hate League of Legends but I kinda like the animation style. And I'm pretty enthralled with the characters and story so far. Only a few episodes so maybe it'll change. But so far I'm hooked. Different strokes for different folks

I also finally started Penguin, which I'm also in to despite not seeing the Batman movie it's based on. Now all I want for Christmas is an insane mob boss girlfriend who broke outta Arkham Asylum:

Black Doves (netflix) was decent. I also finally just started fight night: million dollar heist (peacock) and it seems quite good... Also the new disney+ star wars show starts off pretty well, called skeleton crew (from the writer director of the recent Spider-Man home movies and wolfs movie) with kids

Only watched the first few episodes but I think it's great. Star Wars with kids was a very good idea. Also haven't seen Jude Law in a minute.

I watched the new Dune series. My review:

It got better as the season went on. But overall kind've a mess. I'm a big Dune fan though so I'll still eat that garbage

My roommate put that on so I saw bits of the first few episodes, maybe only two, so boring, I hate it lol The only thing I like about all these new Dune movies etc is the visual, I think the story is dense nonsense super dull

LOL. Honestly the HBO series proves the new movies made by that Quebecois guy are kind've a miracle. Only decent adaptation. The Dune books have always been considered unadaptable. They're philosophical books about human nature, politics, religion. Not great fodder for movies/TV.

Just finished Severance season 1, really reminded me of Dollhouse mixed with the game Control but the cliffhanger ending was so frustrating. Can’t wait for season 2 to come out! Really missed a good mystery box show, but forgot how frustrating they can be between seasons when they leave the viewer with more questions than answers.

Yeah, Netflix has really been trying to increase their in house content and provide more representation in their shows, but so many of their originals (gay or straight) feel like they just had an outline of a story and several sex scenes planned, but didn’t get the time or budget to connect their plot points or characters with each other.

What show? That description definitely sounds like a common coming out story, I definitely did something similar when I was figuring myself out. Hopefully it’s not a “Loving Annabelle” sort of story where the child is trying to hook up with their teacher/other adult though.

Lesbian forums doesn't imply porn? (this might go without saying, but gay people do exist at every age, plenty of hetero content)
Exactly! Was assuming the worst based on how the comment was phrased, especially since the “high school kid hooks up with an adult since they have no peers they can turn to” trope is very common for gay stories set before the 2000s. Thankfully we have healthier coming out/coming of age stories like “The Half of It”, “Booksmart” and “Love, Simon” nowadays rather than the more trauma filled stories like “Edge of Seventeen” (from 1984), “Boys Don’t Cry” or “But I’m a Cheerleader” I grew up with.

I've just started fast forwarding through the awkardness to get to the next scene when chicks start face licking on these tv shows ... gotta expect it at every moment

I watch more UK, Australian, and New Zealand TV shows than I do American shows at this point even though I've always lived in America.

I don't know if you've gotten into panel shows, but there are some amazing ones that you can watch every episode of for years on YouTube. And some you'd have to find other methods but are definitely easily tracked down.

My favorite ones are the ones that really deep dive into the format and go for total absurdist humor.

If you're curious, I highly recommend watching some "Taskmaster" episodes. It's been on for over 10 years, and if you like it, I highly recommend watching not just the original UK version, but definitely the Australian and New Zealand ones are great as well. I've even watched every episode from every season of numerous countries that aren't even in English and I had to watch with subtitles. 😂
You can watch most of the episodes for free on the official Taskmaster YouTube channel. For some reason they've been putting them out there within a week after they air on UKTV.

Other great ones for hilarious absurdist humor, would be "8 out of 10 cats does countdown", "big fat quiz of the Year" and "big fat quiz of everything".

But there are many other shows as well in the format that are great.

LOL you're so fucking lucky that you just watched it because the new season is out in a week or two. Good call on the Control comparison too.

I pray Ben Stiller is able to pull off the second season. Because Severance was one of the best first seasons of a show I can remember. The only other one I can think of is Westworld, and they weren't able to keep the same magic going into season 2.

Seems like I've been waiting forever. But the "return to office" couldn't be happening at a better time.

Main reason I watched it now! My siblings are obsessed with Apple’s sci fi shows and mentioned the new series coming soon over the holiday so I had to check it out. My spouse caught the Control similarities, Lumon’s upper floors (and the hall of founders) are nearly identical to the Oldest House, and Hally is very similar to Jesse. Really wonder if someone on the design team was inspired by The Bureau or if they just happened to be drawing from the same sources.

I really hope so too! A 2+year hiatus with that ending must’ve been brutal, hope they can keep going strong rather than having to rush plot like in Dollhouse.

Also just finished the final season of What we do in the Shadows! Was a good final season but it definitely felt like they were out of ideas and just wanted the show to end (think they even made that joke in the finale). The episode where they recreated The Warriors with vampires was far and away the standout for me, but that movie is one of my all time favourites so I’m a tad biased.

You can start one. You don't need to wait for someone else to start it.
Thankyou for your encouragement. I'd really value a book thread, but I have a poor record of starting threads with any longevity. Also (and for perhaps related reasons) I also have views on the legitimacy of individual IP, so generally prefer to share my inspiration with others who have the abilities to manifest them better than me, or along with me. I have troubling collectivist tendencies, and a fondness for tractor farms.

Haha I've been wanting to rewatch that, remember it as sort of a trippy mess that somehow holds together!

I tried watching the agency, new US adaptation, and found the first episode so bland and boring I just don't want to bother anymore lol I'm sure the original must have been better!

Still have a few episodes left of Shadows, going slow, lazlo's father was pretty classic

Looks like you two are on to something.

Rewatching now and am enjoying it more than I did in 2022. Maybe because our corporatocracy has decayed significantly since then. The attention to detail is delightful. For example...

When Ms. Cobel is posing as a lactation consultant for Mark S's sister, there is a piano version of her bizarre ode to Kier playing in the background. This show is both mysterious and important 👍

Praise Kier!!

I'd really value a book thread

FWIW I would participate if you make one

Ok I was making fun of Ricken's book but this quote is unironically kind've a banger:

"Our job is to taste free air. Your so-called boss may own the clock that taunts you from the wall, but, my friends, the hour is yours."

The joke is that the Severed employees have never read anything other than the Lumen Employee Handbook. So of course, self-help drivel sounds profound to them.

But there's another layer. The entire facade, where we trade our lives laboring under petty dictatorships to make shareholders even richer, is so flimsy that even a dullard like Ricken can knock the whole house of cards down.

Because the prison the Severed are kept in cuts both ways. They also don't have an entire media apparatus continually reaffirming that the absurd way they live their lives is actually good and cool.
