So you think 3mm Zirc is still a good choice for full bowl, sipping style? My concern was that 3mm would not have the heat capacity for this style, compared to the 2.5mm.

I guess if you still have enough heat capacity to finish the bowl with 3mm, then the extra airflow is worth it alone.
I just had a bowl a second ago with the 3mm, I am happier with the 3mm Zrc than the 2.5mm Zrc but believe me when I say I went back and forth a few dozen times - even multiple times in the same day - before I settled on that one.

Its interesting you mention airflow because the change in ball size meant I almost closed the cap airflow (<1/4 open) in comparison to running it mostly open with the 2.5mm

... but with Boro I am not convinced 3mm is the right size, I changed back every time I tried the 3mm - and its been a couple of days at 2.5mm without me changing it so I think that's consensus that 2.5mm is my preferred boro size.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this. Really helpful.

For those that are having issues with the balls falling out, I wonder if there is enough space to add another screen, or two...?

I don't have mine to hand so not sure if having extra screens lower down would affect how the cap screws on, it might interfere with the top of the bowl.

Or maybe an o-ring that's rated for high amounts of heat could be set under the screen, that could maybe hold it in place.
I'm not well clued up on what o-ring materials are suitable for what, maybe just a bigger version of the types already used?

I guess theres a few ways it could be done but they'd all add to the cost.

Did some spring cleaning this week. Came across some old dynavap tips and cap. Decided to have a few cycles for old times sake. I hadn't used a dynavap for a few years, even before Tempest released.

Put the tip on a BB3 and used the same Sake bottle rig I use for the Tempest. Few things stand out. First is the airflow. I have a headache from feeling like I was sucking a golfball through a hose. And the hits? My god pathetic. The warm up hit, I can't believe we normalised getting next to no vapour for the first heat cycle.

Vaped a 0.1g bowl In the dynavap and I feel like I haven't even used anything. For comparison, the Tempest half bowl has been wrecking me all week. It's been a single Tempest half bowl per session for me all week, as I try to build my tolerance back.

We are so spoiled with the Tempest :D

Good idea, thanks, there’s plenty of space for 2. I thought it would reduce the airflow quite a bit, but it’s perfectly fine actually. You can tighten the 2nd screen onto the first and it’s pretty much fixed in place then, it def won’t move anywhere. It’s not easy to tighten it without the Reload tool, other screwdrivers can slip out. The leather case will have a tool for it as well.

Glad to see the above remedy. I love Mad Heaters and my Tempest, but this seemed like a potentially bad problem. I have not yet had the balls fall out but it seems at least a few have. I can only imagine how much it would suck if the balls were still extremely hot and spilled everywhere.
Sometimes I use it in bed and shit could be real bad 😂

I've had this thing for about 6 months. Only had it happen once, and I was scraping the tip screen with a de-bowler (unnecessary).

So it's not a common thing, and can be helped with user behaviour. I agree the chance it can happen is unfortunate.

The Reload makes the event safer also, as the balls just fall into the reload.

I do admit I'm cautious when emptying a bowl since it happened however.

I haven't had the balls out of my Tempest head yet, intentionally or otherwise. I have still been cleaning the balls by soaking the head in ISO and rinsing with hot water. I have occasionally unscrewed the screen to see if the balls look dirty, which they usually do. But they look fine after a good soak and rinse. I have never had the balls come out accidentally. I did get 100 2.5mm balls from ebay as backup should I lose some. When the Tempest is released I will likely add some 3mm balls from MH to the wood stem and additional head I intend to order just to try them out. While I have intended to pull the balls out and clean them in a spoon with the flame from a torch, I haven't yet done that. I have since read that the shock of that could cause some of the balls to crack or break, but that may only be larger balls that that is likely to happen to. Regardless, since I have backup that is not really a concern for me.

So @Brenyo with both screens do you like screw in one at a time or both together? I'm visualizing in my head its probably easier to set one screen at a time right? also if this does hold in the screen a lot better glad you and the other forum members were able to come up with this solution.

edit: i wonder if having the dual screens helps less flower material from touching the balls when some users heat one handed in the wand.

Scorching hot balls attacking people makes me kinda paranoid :uhoh:
Wouldn't the Tempest in a ziplock baggy + 99% isopropyl alcohol in an ultrasonic cleaner method get everything nice and clean without tampering with the ball chamber?

Yes, it does in my experience as I have suggested above even without the ultrasonic cleaner and with only 91% ISO. I usually let it soak in a jar for a couple hours though, and torching the balls would go a lot quicker. The way I use it I haven't felt a need for that speed, however, or I would have given it a go.

A friend told me a story years ago involving someone coughing into a lit bong in his bedroom.
The contents of the bowl flew out everywhere, made an absolute mess, his mattress was full of hot rock holes, parents went mental. Ah the good old days 😉😂

Glad to hear that. While I don't have a Tempest yet it would have surprised me if cleaning it would be more effort than a really dirty Mighty CU. The one thing where I think a sonic cleaner is needed sometimes :D

Cool, looks good. Yeah it's quite an open screen, but still looks really airy with them doubled up like that.

So I am a daily tempest user, back to back bowls sometimes based off the reload and am wondering if anyone has tips for filling the reload? I make such a mess (well kinda) when transfering from a regular grinder into it, kinda curious about those electric grinders with a nozel kinda thing, wanna grind into the reload as easy as possible!

Mad Heaters offers a mini filter that is PERFECT for filling your reload. I always had that problem too but this solves that issue!

That reminds me.... after a lot of playing around, after multiple different torches.... I decided I prefer the use of the Wand as an initial heat up for the Tempest, to get a full, consistent heat across the whole oven as compared to using a butane torch...

I HATE admitting that as I wanted it to be torch first... however - I can't add heat with the Wand - so after the VI drops below the first mark, I can't successfully reheat with the Wand unless I let it cool, but with a single flame torch I can add additional heat and get more out of the bowl without having to cool the device... so It kind of saves the ritual by having that in the process to complete a bowl (usually a sandwich/rosin bowl - - a single heat is often enough to extract the herbs without requiring a reheat / adding heat during the session)

One other thing I realized that I prefer the native experience with the Tempest on a stem with the airflow closed - as opposed to using it on a Prophet with the airflow open.

Its like my lungs have an absorption limit, it can only absorb so much THC out of the air at one time. If I take the whole bowl in one breath, it doesn't have the same effect as if i take the same bowl and spit it over 5-7 smaller breaths. To me it feels like taking smaller breaths allows the body to absorb more overall in comparison to taking one big large breath - in addition to having a layering affect, with each breath layering the affects on top of the last.

*shrugs* just my subjective experience

We are so spoiled with the Tempest :D
I have been getting grief because I have lost the love of Dinovaps I used to have because of the Tempest and TA family of vapes :) but when two devices literally make me pack away everything else its... something to be excited about.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this. Really helpful.
It wasn't so much leg work as a excuse to try different materials in as many devices as I could get my grubby little hands on and then use those materials in the Tempest - I still haven't put my gem cut in - only because I actually like my two setups - 2.5mm boro on a WPA (open airflow) and 3mm Zrc on my native Tempest stem with a Wooden sleeve (almost closed airflow) - I don't feel the need to change them anymore.

Funny the other devices, my other ball vapes are all but empty of gems at the moment, I have one with gems as I use that occasionally, but not as often since I got the updated VI and discs and got a TA (and put it on my Revolve Gen 2 with a wooden sleave).

... and all the Dinovaps are in their little tubes and are packed away ... I'm probably going to look to get rid of most of them if not all...

Now you have me curious as to the different features you have added to the case, the decapper you mentioned so does that second as a screwdriver or is there more to the case than what I have imagined?

So @Brenyo with both screens do you like screw in one at a time or both together?
One at a time was the way I did it, Brenyo said to "tighten the second onto the first" so I assumed one at a time.

My Tempest got here a couple of days ago (and my Reload a few days before that) and they're currently (for the moment) including those plastic funnels with orders as a no cost add-on.
