May Update

Hi Y'all

I've been busy working on a lot of projects, and haven't been as active as I'd like. I will most likely be MIA until I'm caught up on computer work (I'm working on a new website update :science:).

However, I still have a bunch of updates so let's hop in.

Current Screwball Design + Future Changes

All orders moving forward will have the updated lid, housing, and branded PID:

New Parts Available For Sale

Once I have extra parts (housing + lid) on hand I will make a listing for current screwball owners to purchase the bits. The listing will be $33 with free shipping, and only available to current screwball owners.

If you ordered from one of our international retailers, I'm working on getting them the upgraded parts soon too (Rec Vapes, Wick & Wire, and VapeNorth).

Past Screwball Revisions

The Screwball has taken over 10 rounds of revisions to get to this point. The goal has always been to create the most refined product possible, and it's taking a lot of trial and error to get to the current design.

bowl-lid-prototypes.jpg

Screwball Material Used

To clarify, all released products (unless specified otherwise) will be Titanium. We make prototypes in SS because it's a faster manufacturing process and we receive the samples quicker.

From my personal experience testing Titanium vs SS, I prefer the Titanium version every time and notice a loss of flavor when using SS (Your results may vary)

Planned Screwball Changes

New Bowl Design

Now that the new lid + housing is done, we are testing a new bowl design with removable glass joints. Here is a preview of the microdose bowl that uses the glass joints:

After the OG Bowl w/ glass joints is tested it will be available separately at a discounted rate (TBD) for current SB owners. I also plan to transition the new bowl design into kits and discontinue the metal joint version.

Coil Guard

We are testing a coil guard too. After testing is complete this will also be available for current SB owners at a discounted price.

Branded Packaging

The final planned change is to update the packaging so its branded and retail ready (looks good sitting on the shelf).

Deluxe Stand

We are working on a deluxe stand, but have no estimate on when it will be ready. This would be available as a separate upgrade, and there is no plans to add this into the kit (for cost purposes)

20mm Diffuser + Conduction Test

Here is the latest prototype of the 20mm version being tested:
IMG_1152.jpg

20mm Features:

  • 20mm coil instead of 25mm
  • 3mm gems instead of 2.5mm
  • Works with microdose + OG Bowl
  • Budget option - estimated retail price of ~$249 or less (subject to change)

20mm Release Timeline

After the microdose bowl is complete, we will do a test run for 50 kits of the 20mm version (I will list some for sale and send samples to others). If all goes well, it will be opened up for a presale when the first round of production starts (100+ kits).

Conduction Test:

The Screwball was designed to have more conduction than other diffusers because the bowl goes into the area covered by the coil. This was done to maximize the conduction so the vape would work better at lower (convection) temps.

I wanted to put this to the test, so I did a little experiment with the 25mm Screwball vs the 20mm prototype (both models are SS for testing purposes).

Results:

As I assumed, the 25mm version bowl temp increased faster, and reached a higher internal temp than the 20mm version. Although the results are pretty similar, there is a noticeable difference IMO (I'd like to do more testing when I have titanium versions of both heaters).

Social Media + Community Growth

Although I know not everyone on this forum is fond of social media (myself included), it is however a great tool to reach a broader audience. And regardless of peoples' personal opinions of memes, they have been a great (low effort) way to grow our Instagram account.

My goal has always been to serve the enthusiast communities, but also help grow them by making products more accessible to the non enthusiasts too.

Stickers

If anyone ordered a Screwball from one of our retailers and didn't receive any stickers, then send me an email (hi@vapvana.com) and I'll ship you some for free

Next Update

There are some other prototypes and accessories in the works that I should have in my hands by the next update. If you need anything please reach out to me via email (hi@vapvana.com)

Happy vaping,
Cal

I'm pretty convinced that my Screwball, along with my Anvil, are the only vapes I'd need if were stuck on a desert island. I love how this thing just destroys bowls, and it's a vape I can genuinely say improves my life and my habits in a medical sense. (Like, actually - not in the bullshit way!)

I have a new habit where I have an edible and a coffee after dinner, then I crush a few bowls on the Screwball - I'm sleeping better than I have in years, and I'm so much more productive the next day because I wake up still just baked enough that 1-2 bowls on the Anvil sets me up for the day. When relying on bongs, or even when relying on my Venty/TM2/Dynavaps, I was vaping pretty much all day.

Before buying the Screwball I was concerned about a potential increase in usage; so far it doesn't seem to be an issue, cos I'm not using much during the day.

I was thinking about the stand just now, and while I'm thrilled that these accessories are becoming available, if I were to develop a vaporiser I think I'd want all these things ready to go off the bat. Vapers are crazy, they'll buy all the shit that's available straight away if you make it available to them! (As I did with the Anvil guess, buying a stem that I don't use cos it's inferior to the Revolve, and buying a case I don't use cos I don't take it out and prefer to use the Reload.)

Will you be selling directly to international customers, or is it too much work? I don't mind dealing with Wick & Wire, it's where I bought the Screwball initially, but I imagine I'd get it quicker if I do it directly.

RE: New housing and lid for current SB owners. How difficult will the coil and gem transfer be for the average person? IIRC the gem installation required some kind of rotation and periodic tamping to evenly seat all the gems in the housing. It may be helpful to create a video to walk through the process.

Some quick early impressions now that I had the time to test the Screwball a bit. As it is my first "ball" vape I was blown away just how massive the hits are even with only ~0.15g in half bowl. I also really enjoy the flexibility of going from delicious low-temp convection hits to massive hybrid hits if I soak the metal bowl for a few minutes. The latter definitely gives me a more well rounded high than my former daily drivers the Mighty or TM. I still have to find the best heat settings to emphasis the heavy effects a little more, but so far I am very pleased :science:

Yeah hopefully the final version isn't too difficult to install and we will get some guides to go with it. Spare gem packs for sale in case people lose some while upgrading would be a nice option too :2c:

Has anyone tested their Screwball AVB to see the percentage of extraction at different temperatures?

It would be helpful for us medical users to know how many mgs of cannabinoids we consumed and how much we are leaving in the AVB.

I have no access to a lab but I would chip in (unless it's against the rules) if anyone else wants to know.

I am also going to ask in the "Ask FC" also.

Congratulations B3 let us know what you think .
Just got it! Here is my quick review after 45 mins and 3 bowls:

Packaging very generic. This doesn’t bother me at all. It did include a hand written note thanking me for early support.

The device seems well made, the bowl feels pretty good. The screen doesn’t sit in the middle of the bowl as perfectly as it does in the cannabis hardware one. This doesn’t effect function, but more of a small details thing. The cannabis hardware bowl feels like a tank and this feels more like a jeep.

I did a burn off and then set it to 490 for the first hit. Good god, it does not stop. Incredible. Compared to CH Mercury/shovelhead, the screwball is just a better and harder hitter. It’s not really close. I will say, the wireless CH system is nice in the sense that there isn’t cords everywhere. It feels a lot less cluttered. But the hits are not comparable. If you want elegance and simplicity and minimalist, I guess the CH is still good. I prefer the screwball.

It really should have a coil guard, this is an accident waiting to happen in my confined space i smoke in. I am glad they are making one.

The cocobolo handles on the CH gear are nicer.

This is interesting: on the same 18mm glass piece, my CH bowl never got stuck to the glass once. The screwball bowl gets fused to my glass piece every time I use it. I strongly prefer how the CH shovel head bowl does not expand or is designed in a way to not stick to glass. Comparing the 2 side by side upside down, the CH connector is at least twice as thick as screwball. I suspect this is the real reason why the CH doesn’t see the same expansion/contraction as the screwball bowl. With the screwball bowl, best bet is to just let it cool down before trying to disconnect it.

The sqp tool is nice and heavier than I was expecting. I am not sure that the sqp size correlates perfectly with the bowl size, but it’s nice nonetheless. I like it and I will use it.

PID is surprisingly compact and good (I think). The cord connection seems good. Changes temp way better than CH one. Has an auto-off timer.

Mine did include the new top, which looks and works awesome, but I never tried an old OG one, so I can’t compare. I do think this vape has gotten to the point where it is basically perfectly extracting the flower. Overall, very impressed. Best flower vape hit I have ever experienced. Great value for the price and prob best ball vape you can buy.

Here’s a comparison of the CH and screwball bowls
Given the significant difference in thickness, I'd imagine the Shovelhead bowl takes a while longer to soak up heat and provide that extra conduction the Screwball bowl gives? I guess that's the trade-off between the two - SB bowl has a thinner joint & overall construction, so more sticking, but a quicker heatsoak.

I really apricate you sharing those tests, very very cool, looking forward to trying to the bowl :)

I'm so keen to try the new microdosing bowl as the CH bowl has been a go to - but I have to presoak it in a coil to get the effects I like as it takes soooooo much heat to get it heated up to the point that it produces usable conduction. I always wondered if it was designed as thick as all hell to limit the conduction when used normally - but enable people to add it if they heat soaked in advance. I'm hoping the microdosing bowl will cross that divide and provide the experience I get using a presoaked CH bowl as the screwball bowls heat up so quickly you get conduction at useful levels really quickly.

Dum question but how can you tell if your screwball is getting has hot has the PID says . I have a cheap IR temp gun and it's showing no where near 540f

The SB definitely seem to be working just wondering . I also got one of them meat thermometer coming so I can touch the coil and get a temp reading

Timing. Just set your temp and wait at least 5 min after the PID gets to where you set it. If it were a “live” reading, it would go past your setting by roughly 10 degrees, then slowly dip back down, all while the gems are being heated up.

Really the only temp that matters is that of the air going from the head, into the bowl. Betting that’s hard to measure and anything over 450 you’re not going to have a good time :ko:
