Swirling like a dervish,
barely above the celestial horizon, NGC 772 / ARP 78 is a wonder. With one of its spiral arms
Tidally locked by its companion NGC770, recent (cosmically) stellar formations stretches along its length.

A spectacular unbarred dance in Aries.

Tigers--Check out how much air that one gets off a wet surface catching the ball.

EXOPLANETS

5000 x 4/100 => 200 TERRESTRIAL-like planets found, so far.
What is the possibility that life may have been sparked on some?

Even one, and life may not be unique to Earth alone.

We will not be alone, in our goldilocks zone.

Earth the name of our planet, comes from Old English meaning “ground, soil, dry land”
Add water. Lots of it. An atmosphere. Sun.

Food.

“Seconds, please?” Lots of it.

While waiting for the “ cannibal ” solar maelstrom to arrive, auroras as far south as NY/Pa @ 3 UTC (11 PM EST) are predicted, as geomagnetic storms hit where the Earth’s magnetic field is weakest. Over the poles.

Cannibal flares occur when a larger, faster flare catches up to an earlier one, and form a combined flare.

Meanwhile, another highly energized flare erupted around 2PM yesterday. Classed as an X1.3 (the “X” type flare is 10 x more energetic than the the early oncoming “M” flares).

Active Region AR2975 has been very snappy in the past few days. Earth directed flares has originated from this region, before rotating away to the far side.

We can expect to see some dazzling auroras for the next few nights, as far down as the Northern US.
—And some fizzled spies in the sky. ;)

Meanwhile, recent auroras dance above Montana, and Washington

Excited oxygen molecules give off green photons upon returning to their rest state in the lower atmosphere

Nitrogen higher in the atmosphere release red photons

Aptly named, a red aurora borealis over Sundance, Wyoming—Devils Tower National monument

Weather permitting, glowing reports of colorful auroras dancing down

in the upper US should be forthcoming over the week end

Keep an open eye.

Down under. An Aurora Australis

Salmon Fishing is open on the Columbia River, and people seem to be trolling more than hog lines. "Hog Lines" are a row of boats anchored together in a line, and if someone gets a strike, they release their anchor and float downstream so as to keep the fish free of other people's lines. They then return to their spot and anchor to resume fishing.

Powerful laser beams leave Unit Telescope 4 at ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Their destination? An upper layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, about 90 kilometers from the ground, rich in sodium atoms.
The color of the lasers is tuned to excite these atoms, making them shine brightly, like stars. Astronomers then use these artificial stars to calculate the blurring effect that Earth’s turbulent atmosphere creates on the light from astronomical objects. A deformable mirror uses this information to correct this blur in real time with a technique known as adaptive optics, which leads to much sharper observations.
This telescope, also known as Yepun, is the only one at the VLT equipped with a Laser Guide Star Facility. Each beam is 30 centimeters wide and packs 22 watts of power. For safety reasons, the system is equipped with cameras monitoring the part of the sky occupied by the lasers, so that when an airplane flying by is detected approaching this area, the lasers are promptly switched off.
