If you have a variable voltage capable thing; that will work better than variable wattage. Wattage referenced things are e-cigarettes designed for wire heaters. The Hercules has a ceramic heating rod which wants more linear voltage. So if you can tell your fancy box to give it 7.4V with whatever wattage it works out to be; that would work. Most boxes reference wattage so their use is slightly less than ideal.
From what I understand operational Wattage range is simply derived from the Input Voltage x Atomizer Ohm resistance. Variable Wattage boxes just do the math the other way around, adjusting the volts as necessary to achieve the set wattage functionality. There are different ways of handling the stepping between settings and fractions of settings depending on the voltage or wattage setting and even depending on the chipset manufacturer, but they are basically controlling the same things at the end of the day.
Similarly, near as I can tell, the only new innovations to this market are present in the DNA-40 chipset which, when utilizing non-resistance wire for the atomizer build, can monitor the temperature of the wire itself and limit the voltage through constant checks so it never goes past a certain set temperature point, regardless of your chosen voltage or wattage settings. A sort of ceiling built into the loop, if you will.
As with all things I could be totally wrong, but all of this knowledge comes from my exposure to high end e-cigarette oriented devices.
I know of at least one other user who mentioned his intentions to run his SR-71 on a custom built wood enclosure dual 18650 box mod with a dna chipset but I don't remember following up on his experience. I should search and check. Hmmm. Thanks for the reminder.
Do you have a favorite RDA unit? I have an 8 and still haven't bought any 510 threaded things yet. I would be interested to know what you have used and if you would recommend anything for vaping VG e juice?
I really am in love with the Aqua V2. You can buy a clone of it for $20. As with any rebuildable, the quality and performance of the device is always up to the end user and how well they understand the mechanics of coiling, installing and properly wicking the device. That being said, you can set it up as a really sick dripper or as a really nice tank system, either way it is my favorite rebuildable atomizer and I have owned most of them or at least a clone at some point (ie genesis, kayfun, fogger/taifun, drippers etc)
However I think the SR-74 is really a powerhouse above 8 volts (fresh batteries start at 8.4V) so if you can give it 8.0-8.4V that would be super killer. My SR-71 rods work great at 6.6-7.0V on the Core for holding the button, depending on the concentrate and whether I'm using a 1.5 or 1.7 ohm heating rod; they work great with 8.4V fresh batteries too; but high voltage means a little technique and tapping to keep the oil flavorful and hits tasty.
This is interesting information, thank you. I only have an original SR-71 so I am basing my math on the reported statistics of its ohm reading of 1.5-2.2 and the 7.4v unregulated output of the dual 18350s in the original persei mod. But it is always good to know a little more voltage or wattage won't hurt things.
Quite similarly, even though I have no perceived need for going over 50 watts with any atomizer, the output statistics and overall quality of the chinese box mods leave much to be desired in this regard. This has been my main point of reticence in terms of retiring my persei, although I believe it is now reasonable given the models available.
The only thing that would make it perfect is if W9Tech made an bottom insulator that was 510 threaded instead of 601... the adapter looks so wonk, but I'll probably just order one and take the aesthetic hit, as it were... lol
actually if you take a good look at it the sigelei 100w mod runs on the yihi sx330 chip which is only rated to 6v output.i have the iris for my persei and i almost never run the 7.4v rod below 6.5v
never tried the 3.7v rod with the iris.
i don't want to derail the persei thread but if you wanna chat mods and whatnot feel free to PM me.
Hmm well thank you for this information, that is very important. I must have mis-read. I know you mentioned a 12V box mod with high wattage. Let me know what you end up with, I think we are in the same boat. Cheers
