Hi, my SR-74 taste a bit funky but only at the end of the load when it looks like reclaim....I didn't weight that I put in my hercule but I think between 8-12g of shatter/crumble/wax.....do you think I need to take out my coil and clean it or can I only take out this reclaim while it starts to taste funky and load again with fresh concentrates?

I thought to clean it cause the airflow seems a bit restricted and I can clean the rod too (I never done any cleaning since the end of august when I got it)

Cleaning will help, but scraping and reloading with fresh oil is the lazy way to get good flavor again

My SR-71 stopped heating last week. No light flashing, just no heat. I decided to take a cue from Douglas Adams and not panic.

I figured electrical contact had been lost and took the Herc apart for the first time since I got it (probably put 3-4 g of wax through it).

Holy shit...I am new to the ways and wonders of the wacky world of wax and was unprepared for the godawful mess inside that little cylinder. After cleaning as best I could with an ISO soak (one of the PTFE collars took a soak...hoping that won't be too bad), I reassembled the Herc. Nothing. Took it apart and put it back together and it fired up like a champ. My neighbors probably felt the waves of relief flowing out of my house.

Is there a secret to working with this stuff? By the time I was done, I felt like I had been elbows deep in a beehive. It took several rounds of ISO wiping, then soap cleaning before my hands were sufficiently free of debris that I no longer could do a Spider-Man crawl up one of my walls.

As someone who has worked with computers for many years, the older I get, the more I appreciate the analog world. Recently bought a new clothes washer and didn't pull the trigger until I found the most electronics-light unit I could find (mechanical switches and knobs and NO control panel). I know that the Persei isn't electronics-free, but I'm really starting to appreciate how much of it can be dealt with by tweaking the assembly. It's fantastic to not be so dependent on warranty work (also the reason I'm a huge fan of the Vapman).

I'm about to order an Sr-71, Sr-74 coils, and an sr-71 white rod. Do I also need the Sr-71 steel cap? What is it for? Will I need a hammer top too? I am using an older persei. Also does the Sr-71 come with a rod?

I ordered the discounted SR-71 and received the white rod and one coil. Works great with my Persei. My only other purchase was two IMR 18350.

Good luck.

the hammer top is commonly used to make it easier to run the SR71/74 but its not required just a quality of life purchase if you dont want to hold the button

the sr74 style coils will work in either herc they fit the same either way

Edit: the coils fit the same but alot of people like to squash them either flatter or into an oval to hold it place better and not slide up the tube

I wish I had known this before I put it together the first time. The coil does have a tendency to ride up and it gets mucking fessy. After cleaning up, I've done this and it does seem to help keep the coil down.

Can I see a pic of what you mean by squashing the coil? How will it fit in if its already squished? And is there anywhere to see how to load and prime the herc? I know how to assemble it now, just not load and proper use, which I want to know before I buy.

I have a strict cleaning regiment i follow to make sure i dont get oil everywhere, even if its all over the ptfe and everything else. I leave the herc attached to the persei just so its easier to work with. Take off ptfe, if there is oil all over the outside of the metal cylinders, i take a clean razor blade and scrape it all off before wiping the remaining film with iso. (I dont usually have to take the coil and rod out)Disconnect heating chamber, wipe threads and contact with iso. Torch rod contact only slightly, and re wipe with iso. The the bottom assembly together but remove bottom cylinder. Scrape cylinder, dump in iso. Scrape remainder of reclaim from bottom assembly. once all reclaim is off the bottom assembly, you can troch the gold pin, again, only slightly, till you see the spring bounce back(if its going to on sr 74-71 you no have spring) and clean the inside of gold pin with half sized cotton swab with iso. Keep cotton swabbing until no more residue is picked up. 4 cotton swabs bunched together and dipped in iso clean the inside of the ptfe. I follow these steps now and rarely have to worry about reclaim all over my hands. I also have a kit of all my cleaning stuff kept together for when i give a full herc to amateurs who spill my oil everywhere. If youre tasting burnt flavor and dont feel like pulling the rod and coil out, just hit it until it stops producing vapor and drop some fresh .5 in there. I get away with that on my 3.7 most of the time.

yeah.....don't get me wrong. i love my uptech stuff, and i've never seen anything anywhere close to a hercules sr-71. i'm just getting really frustrated. 2 tops dying in one week is pretty brutal. my average lifetime on ANY mod i've bought is 1-2 years. i've had the persei a few months and 2 out of 3 tops are dead.

certainly not saying ego crap is better or even good....and it's not what i own or buy (though i'm using a borrowed one right now instead of frying my iris) but it's embarrassing when i'm trying to convince people they need to move towards higher grade medically safe devices and what they see is hundreds of dollars worth of broken stuff on my shelf while i ask to borrow their cheap shit for a few weeks.

i apologize if i came off grumpy and downed on uptech, i don't mean to. not being able to medicate makes me grumpy. and i'm kicking myself for investing pretty much every penny i'd saved all year in something that i got to use for less than i saved up for.

so once again i'm sorry if i ranted a bit like an ass.

the v4 tops are shipping out this monday along with the hercules, limited number and quantity atm and we will start implementing them in warranty repairs.

Since these are above and beyond the current tops we have we have to apply a $10 upgrade fee when getting these tops to the consumers.

i'm a little behind on the thread. what features did the v4 end up with finally? especially does it include a hammer/on-off kinda thing? i seem to remember it being mentioned at one point. i find that feature indispensable when hooking the herc up to a water tool.

plus i like the sound of being able to replace my dead v2 and hammer with one new top.

all i remember for sure is that you guys stuck some kind of touch sensitive activation instead of a regular button on there.

So how does that work, I would send in my current top + pay the fee and be shipped a new top for the persei? Or is this only if your current top has stopped working?

I have been hitting my persei kiss at 7.4v for the past few days. Quite happy. I think its harder to burn oil in a full cart than in a near empty cart. Need more experiment there. Im getting better at sensing/tasting oil vapor heat. Before, it was no taste and %#@$?% I heated my oil too much. I could only evaluate the cloud. Now im finding that perfect heat zone, pulsing pattern.

Then I will tackle the herc again :freak:

How long are you holding/pulsing for? with the 7.4 I have not tried pulsing, I feel it will get way too hot. I get a nice inhale from pressing the button for only 1.5 seconds.

It depends on how much the kiss cart is filled. Maybe, experiment in progress, about 1 sec press or less, 3-5 times during inhale on small load. Bigger load need a longer initial press, and maybe longer subsequent presses. Thats is in the optic of going for big clouds :D.

the one coil you got, is it Ti (shorter) or is it SS (needs to be cut down)?

i've never been thrilled with the squash coil method. The idea is to deform the coil just enough that it pushes against the sides of the herc chamber.

Just out of curiosity, what is it that bugs you about the squashed coil method? Since I've done so, I have had zero problems with my coil creeping up and the SR-71 is performing even better.

I press for 1/2 the time you do, but give it multiple taps just under a second long each. Half a second gap maybe. Whatever feels good. Try different techniques with different consistencies of concentrate.
