Yea I want one fuck it. Is shipping to the Uk gonna be ok?

Just out of interest how do you pull on this thing? Is it possible to take small 'cigarette' type puffs and still get decent vapour or do you have to really draw on it like most vapes?

Love the aesthetics, love the design, big props to you @Dan Morrison These are the products that we should all really appreciate. Not mass produced crap from factories in china.

Peace and vapour

the draw question was also on my mind. along with the shipping costs to europe. :) i'd really like if it was cigarette style. prolongs the session, takes away the hurry from vaping.

Love to know if the Okin is weighted such that it can be balanced comfortably between the fingers like a cigar can without giving too much if any attention to a top heavy (metal sconce) end? I would imagine that the new shorter design enhances the ergonomics of the design. .. Thanks!

I like this new relationship going on with vape manufacturers (Indica, haze, Persei) and soon-to-be customers or current customers. I have seen it with other manufacturers, but not on the same level as Dan. He takes time to answer all questions and is not condescending if I throw out a newb question. It is more of a personal relationship that makes me want the Okin more. It also shows the humility of Dan. Don't want to sound like a kiss ass, but this type of personal interaction is not common. Manufacturers on this forum tend to answer specific questions and avoid others. I give you major props Dan and can't wait to try it out. I think it'll look perfect next to the Vapman.

Edit: I'm going to have 3 shelves dedicated to my vapes. I would feel that leaving the okin in the box would not do it justice. Dan, I was wondering if you can make a very simple stand (horizontal) where I can showcase the okin. I want it to be out in the open so my friends can see when not in use

I think the most unusual thing about the Okin is that you can absolutely take draws exactly as if it were a cigaerette. The vapor is there immediately, no matter how tiny the puff. With a load of tobacco you can really puff on it exactly like a pipe, allowing vapour to billow out of your mouth between puffs, Im a fan of french inhaling tobacco puffs one after another to taste and smell all the flavours. The heat source is just so robust, you haul on it and it just gets stronger! The draw weight is very minimal, and I think this is key, you need that airflow to make it feel natural.

It is a different experience with herbs, and the little puffs will not produce the same vapor that a tobacco cased with all sorts of flavouring will, but its still do-able either way.

Shipping will be calculated when I am finished, Ill probably make it a flat rate. I did that with my pipes, it was $25cdn internationally. For this it will be less. The box will be packed as efficiently as possible.

Any decent pipemaker quickly learns the importance of weight and balance in a pipe! This has been an elemnt that i have payed close attention to with the okin. It can absolutely be held like a cigar, and yes, the shorter design helps a bit in that regard. I dont like how people are holding pen vapes these days.... it always looks awkward, like they are sipping from a beverage straw or something, uhg. I think the design pretty much forces you to go back to the old, classic, holding style because there is a burning ember at the tip...it just feels natural.

I have a feeling Dan is going to spending a lot more of his future making charcoal than he ever thought...

I have nightmares about it. Churning a giant charcoal cauldron over a smouldering pit of fire, wearing nothing but a dirty rag, drenched in sweat. Charcoal Jesus carries the wooden cross on his back, the never ending lashes of waiting customers drive him onward.

Ha, but seriously... I will most likely get an electric kiln to make charcoal in, it should be mostly automated. The hard part is sourcing bamboo cane that is within a 2mm tolerance. Either that, or order a container load from China and sort the cane to size by hand, expecting about 50% over/under sized. Still a viable option however...

Thank you! But it's only because im selfish, I love to talk about my obsession, and im just using all you chumps to acheive that end, muahahaha.

I may make the case in a way that you can also set it up as a nice horizontal stand...

Dangus

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Been quietly following this thread for a bit and am super psyched on this! With a switch coming soon in family dynamics, I will soon be mainly vaping in the garage/shop...so this should be a very classy addition for out there.

I also wanted to say that the process of the charcoal making is very cool, thanks for writing that up! I like to read the r/DIY & instructables sites and this is better/more interesting than a lot of things I've seen lately. Perhaps it a bit more in my realm of interest?

anyways, I'm stoked, and ready to jump in.

Cheers!

Hi Dan,

I remember you stating much earlier in the thread that you would like for the bamboo used for the charcoal to be locally sourced. I would also feel much better about this than bamboo sourced from China. Is that no longer a viable option with all the attention this has received and the amount of charcoal you're expecting to ship out?

Hahahaha. Oh man, I should make a short film advertisement for the Okin.

It's an epic coming of age tale following the life of Charcoal Jesus, starting with his birth in the manger, receiving the three gifts of herb, bamboo, and steel... Ending with his resurrection, emerging from his tomb in a huge cloud of vapour, holding the finished okin up to the heavens and proclaiming that he is indeed the son of Dabs, sent here to spread the holy vape!

Thats in no way pretentious...right?

@Dangus Thank you!

@ShanJezi , I don't remember saying that, but I guess I did!
I have not been able to find appropriately sized bamboo from growers in North America, they usually specialize in larger diameter cane and growing plants. The fact is that most bamboo comes from China, and they are experts in growing and harvesting. I avoid Chinese made products when I can, but stuff like bamboo and tea are exceptions.

This is totally off topic, but has anyone ever tried putting a tiny steel ball into their herb chamber so that you can shake up the contents like a can of spraypaint?

Or better yet, use a magnet from the outside to move the load around?

Yes, tried it but doesn't really work, IME. The BB pellet that I tried just became nested in the load and didn't serve to redistribute or shake up the load at all. Actually, if the load chamber was only filled half way (no steel ball), lightly packed, a vigorous hand & wrist action did move things around somewhat, but still not as well as a quick stir with a pronged instrument.

EDIT: IMO, I don't even consider stirring to be an inconvenience, but rather a brief enjoyable part of the ritual. I am looking forward to the occasional stir or shake with my Okin!

I haven't used a steel ball, but I keep a couple coins in my grinder, which I shake up to more finely grind up the bud for use in my MFLB. This works well for me, and also fills up my kief tray faster.

In regards to the locally sourced bamboo.. Maybe I misremembered you saying that. Ah well, I trust your judgement considering how much thought you've put into this project.

i don't consider it an inconvenience with the mflb either. but with a burning charcoal tip the scenario changes. i'd prefer not to have to open the okin, once it's lit.

Oh yes, the steel ball is really not necessary at all, I was just getting off topic there...

Now back to our regularilly scheduled program.

Tested the okin with e-cig juice and cotton ball last night, worked great!

So, for all those wondering if they will be able to use liquid and concentrates, it should be just fine! With a little cotton and no modification you can go between loose herbs, ejuice, concentrates...

@natural farmer , At first i was also concerned about ash being drawn through the metal screen, but surprisingly these bamboo charcoals dont produce as much ash as you would imagine, and the ash is always stopped by the screen... It just kinda sits right ontop of it, weird. I've never seen ash in the chamber, or on the very fine mesh secondary screen.

this type of draw variation actually screams for a hookah like use of the okin. it could work well with the orbiter, from what i understand.

Whoops, seems I misunderstood the question! :ko:

Wow. The Okin looks like it's gonna be a killer vape. Very unique and visually appealing. Love it! Can't wait to hear what the testers will have to say about it. I imagine nothing but high praise :)

I was thinking of getting the solo for my next vape... Now I think I'll have to go with the Okin lol ;)

Keep the updates coming, I can't wait to hear more!
