I have been wondering about the risk of "copper toxicity" from heating the copper up. Is this something to worry about? The manufacturer states it is all made from non-toxic materials... the copper coating on the wires could be toxic, which directly contradicts the claim.

MagicFlight; Did you place the cyclone bowl on the E during the 15 min conditioning period or place it on at the beginning of the test
The cyclone bowl was placed on the heating unit base before starting the heat, and it remained there for the duration of all tests. In later tests, we also carefully wrapped the entire glass system, heating element and cyclone bowl together, with 1 inch of quartz wool (an effective insulator). Thermal measurement points were also low-mass junctions suspended in the central portion of the hot air stream -- ie, as to not be affected by proximity effects associated with the glass. We also checked for dependencies associated with differing rates of airflow. If there were distortions in the results, it is probably not due to technique. We expect that these results would be repeatable by any interested researcher appropriately equipped.

50 to 100 degrees C below what my screen shows would put my vaping in a unrealistically low range.
Bear in mind that even as verbose as my description of those tests and the results are, they are still somewhat of a simplification of the actual measurements/procedure. In particular, the degree of difference between the digital display and the temperature within the cyclone bowl itself is itself proportional to the degree of difference between either of these measurements and the ambient. In other words, if the E is set to 180C, the temperature loss will be lower -- more like 35C of 40C, whereas if you set the unit to 220C, the loss is more significant -- more like 60C to 65C. This is of course, assuming stasis. If the unit has not been given a chance -- enough minutes -- to warm the cyclone bowl, then the temp loss will be more.

However, it is worth noting that vaporization itself is not going to happen exactly at a specific temperature. Rather, groups of associated compound types become more likely to transition to a vapor form more quickly as the temperature is increased. Certain types of effect tend to start becoming apparent even at rather low vaporization temperatures. Higher temperature does affect which compounds will be released, but it more significantly affects how fast and in which proportions they are released. Since it is not really so exactly important what specific temperature is used to cause vaporization to happen at all, it *is* the case that vaporizers can be practically useful even if the actual temperature at the herb seems to be somewhat low. As such, although the actual operating temperature of an E may be around 150C when the display is set to 180C, it will still work just fine. The behavior is consistent -- similar results whenever used, and responsive -- changing taste/results as the set temperature is increased -- that *functionally* the E works for most users just fine, regardless of the difference between the indicated temperature and the actual temperature in the cyclone bowl. The E remains a popular unit and a practical one for many people, regardless of these details.

steven22, how long I wait depends on how fresh my batteries are. If they've just been charged, it's faster. I just got out my LB to double check how long it took and a 6 count had vapor coming out of the stem. And yes, as long as you are drawing, the herb should not combust. According to Magic Flights's post above, I was incorrect in saying that if your herb is blackened that you have combusted. But, you have been vaping at a higher temp and for me, is not as desirable.

I've got to add that how high I am sometimes depends a lot on how much vapor I perceive I have inhaled. I find using a light and blowing into it, not directly into it, but sort of under it so that you can see the vapor exhaled really helps. I know it's in my mind and when I can't see the vapor, I'm getting as much, but there's something about actually seeing it that makes me feel I'm really getting all I can. Especially with the LB. Silly, I know. I find a desk lamp or reading lamp works the best.
I'm the exact same. I have a lamp in my living room dedicated to seeing vapor. I don't know why,but I really NEED to see my clouds when I exhale.

And I agree on the 6 to 10 second warmup time, it's crucial.

Before you ask questions like that, do a little research. Took me two minutes. Here's what wikipedia says :

"Since copper is actively excreted by the normal body, chronic copper toxicosis in humans without a genetic defect in copper handling has not been demonstrated"

We would not have made the claim if we did not feel that it was well supported by the physical facts. We have done as much research on this topic (presented elsewhere in this thread, etc) as we believe to be necessary to assure the safety of all users of our product. Therefore, until someone provides us with some sort of real evidence/research (ie, something more supported than speculation and/or opinion), we will continue to suggest that it is not worth worrying about. We do also, however, encourage any and all interested parties to do their own research and come to their own conclusions -- particularly if they report back to us if there is found to be anything worth talking about and most especially if they can do so in a reasonably well informed and professional manner. So far, all indications have been that the temperatures involved are far too low for there to be anything worth thinking about.

Before you answer a question like mine, please don't assume I didn't.
Apparently you didn't do enough research. Thanks anyways though. ;)
FYI - I see you belong to the wikipedia club.
Here is an excerpt from the ATSDR...
"Copper is essential for good health. However, exposure to higher doses can be harmful. Long- term exposure to copper dust can irritate your nose, mouth, and eyes, and cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea. If you drink water that contains higher than normal levels of copper, you may experience nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, or diarrhea. Intentionally high intakes of copper can cause liver and kidney damage and even DEATH. We do not know if copper can cause cancer in humans. EPA does not classify copper as a human carcinogen because there are no adequate human or animal cancer studies."

Copper is a metal on the ATSDR list as a priority toxin. The Tolerable Upper Limit (UL) for copper is at 10,000 micrograms. I was concerned about copper migration from the wires. I assumed you have done extensive testing, but I still felt it was worth asking. I am awaiting my very own LB. It should arrive early next week. I am so intrigued with this little wonder, I had to have one myself.

Does it harm the batteries if they get very hot? Not so hot I can't pull it out when needed, but too hot to hold in a closed palm.. Usually I use another battery while the hot one cools off, but is there any risk in using a very hot battery in the LB?

Thanks

Understood. There is no copper migration to speak of. Also, note that 10 milligrams of copper is probably more than is in the Box altogether. If any of it was moving, it would be fairly obvious.

Ok, I have had my Magic flight for a little more than 24 hours and I do have to say I LOVE it. I am a fan boy.
I do have to say to all of the questions and comments, this is a unique experience. All herb is different and will react differently. Yes it does "use up" battery's, but "what a little work horse." The design is simple and unquestionably effective. I was at "my point" all night last night with just 1.5 grams. ( 5 year smoker.) Magic Flight should get some kind of award for design and the like. Keep it up guys.
If you are on the fence, Jump. If you can justify it, do it. You will not be disappointed. :peace:

Letting the batteries get too hot is not good for them. It's better to alternate between two batteries as you use your box so that they don't overheat.

is there a general conscientious on the best method to mark the batteries to identify them?

On the side of my batteries I put the mah rating. On my Duracell branded Eneloops I put 'LSD', in both cases using a permanent marker.

I received my Magic Flight Launch Box yesterday. I am a new vaporist-- only used my brother's Da Buddha until I got my own a few weeks ago. It was faulty and I sent it back to 7th Floor for repair. The DBV is amazing but I wanted a portable (especially so I wouldn't have to go back to combustion while waiting for DBV), so I ordered the Launch Box after seriously debating between it and the Vapor Genie.

I know everyone says this, but the LB really is very, very small. I believe that no matter how many comparative pictures/videos you see, you really cannot appreciate how small it is until you hold it in your own hand. Stealth factor number one.

Design-wise, it is most impressive. I don't think more than a couple improvements could be made without compromising the stealth and simplicity of this vape. It is also very aesthetically pleasing to me. And at a glance it does not resemble paraphernalia at all. Definite advantage over the VG. The glass plate cover is wonderful. I love shaking the box between hits. Better than stirring any day.

Some might say it is so simple as not to merit the cost, but you have to look at the whole picture. It is a proven-to-work vape, made by people just like you, that is backed by a lifetime warranty (for Box AND accessories), and it comes with a LOT of extra stuff. You know there's got to be something to a vaporizer that has 117 pages of people (including me, now) positively deluging it with praise. (Thanks to all of you, by the way. Thank you very, very much.)

It seems that for most people (me included), the short battery life is the only issue causing hesitation when considering the LB. Let me tell you that ANY qualms you had about the batteries are gone once you realize you can use it almost anywhere. This is not true for the VG. People will notice if you are holding a torch lighter to a pipe on the street in the middle of the day. This also makes it infinitely better for car use. No way would I want to attempt hitting a VG while driving. Particularly a manual.

I know that this is different for everyone, but I personally have found that so far, the batteries last much longer than most people say they do. I bought eight extra Sanyo Eneloop batteries (which I now think is too many, but can't hurt to have extras), figuring that they were the ones that came with the Launch Box and Magic-Flight wouldn't steer me wrong. The Eneloops have performed beyond my expectations; I have used one battery for 3-4 trenches between 3-4 people.

Now, like I said, everyone uses it diffently. I don't fill the trench all the way--maybe 1/3 to 1/2 full. I grind the herb finely. On the first fire-up I push the battery in completely and wait about 4 seconds. That's when I usually see vapor. Then I inhale. I prefer to hit the box native. I generally take shorter inhales, 7-10 seconds. Sometimes more or less. I pull out the battery JUST BEFORE I'm finished hitting the box. And I shake between almost every hit.

As I told my friends, unless it is the first hit, the battery should NOT be connected all the way if the Box is not at your mouth. Otherwise it is a waste of herb and battery life. My best friend is particularly guilty of this; she is notorious for chilling on bowls and I caught her a couple times taking the box away from her mouth to say something in between hitting it. As a result, she charred the edges of the herb once or twice. If you have any friends that are like this and plan to share your LB with them (everyone should share!), educate them thoroughly on proper use; you will thank yourself later.

I find the LB to be incredibly efficient, getting many hits out of each load using very nice medicinal herb brought in from California. Sorry but I don't count hits--no fun.

To summarize, I will say what I told someone who was considering the LB in the chatroom last night: I think you would be hard pressed to find a Magic Flight Launch Box owner who wouldn't recommend it. And that is high praise indeed.

Plus, if you ever need information, the good people here at Fuck Combustion have asked and answered enough questions to fill a book with. Thank you all and thank you Magic Flight for your inspiration, dedication and commitment to making this product and answering our questions.

You are what you vape!

Edit: Please don't take my comments about the VG the wrong way--I have used one and it's also great, just not as stealthy as the LB. I'll probably even have a VG bat within the next 6 months. It does have its niche, like any vaporizer.

^^^ Great review! And don't feel bad, I own a VG and, I have placed my order for a LB. I will keep the VG, but I am expecting the LB to be my new travel vape. I agree with your observations of the VG & LB when it comes to steathlyness ( is that even a word?) :)
I am sure it will not replace my Buddha for home use, but it seems to be just the ticket for on the go.

Yeah and then some cop bust you with it and then tries to figure out how druggies like you are getting LSD in batteries these days. :uhoh:

Well I had to come back in here and post about my weekend... Last week I read this entire thread and ordered my LB. It arrived in a timely fashion (2 days). I ended up spending my entire weekend with my new friend... and WOW.. This is a great piece... This unit far exceeded my expectations.. I thought it may have a complicated learning curve associated with it, but I was wrong.. Just grind, load trench, insert batt, wait 3 seconds!, and VAPE.. Its that easy.. Just a nice 5 to 10 sec inhale and your well on your way! I was able to rotate the 2 batts all weekend and i was vaped the whole time! I took it to the lake and was able to vape while on a motor boat and in the wind! It was great.. I already have 3 people that are going to order the LB after seeing mine.. Great product. I really cannot say ANYTHING bad about it.. Best money I ever spent. Love it. Thx Magicflight!

I recently received a warranty replacement for my LB. I have to admit I like the replacement unit much better. It seems to be calibrated a little hotter than my original unit. The light in back of the trench is also a big plus. I have also found filling the trench with just enough to coat the bottom, it is unnecessary to mix and shake since the entire load is thoroughly extracted when using micro amounts.

I know its been said before, and will be said again in the future but I just wanted to reiterate my appreciation to MF.

The unit is great and the customer service is the absolute best. I hope anyone considering this purchase does so. You will not be disappointed at all.

Thank you MF for your continued dedication here and to anyone else not part of the site.

Thanks for answering our questions MagicFlight. :)

What's the inside diameter of the silicone WHIP Tube that you sell on the Blisssville site?

I'm asking since if it's possible I'd like to put the WHIP Tube into a waterpipe I have and try out vaping through a waterpipe. It's a rather small waterpipe and I think it just may fit.

Has anyone here done this with either the WHIP Tube or the plastic tube that comes with the magic flight box?
