I think it can . It is mentioned on FC that a charger off 10 nimh batteries like the one of vapolution or the ettera moxieor the Vapir oxygen. :) or the local shack can do the job.. There also bigger power supplies (300 g - 2 kg ) :D

There's nothing..... yet. If I know Alan, now that you've planted the seed, he will think on it.

momofthegoons,

That just happened...
A 3 cell r/c lipo is perfect for supplying 12 volts. I then go a step farther and use a voltage regulator to regulate my voltage to a precise 12 volts.

The HI sounds great, but I have a concern. Many favor the HI with glass, but I'm not a glass user primarily. Would the HI perform for dry hits or do you think it might be too hot?

I use the HI for dry hits more than water filtration since it takes less time (more shop time). I also use a non-variable power supply since I will be wanting to take it to the highest temperature at some point during that bowl anyhow. I just mix room air to control the temperature by just putting the end of the tube to the HI center tube. That way I can precisely control the temperature and get as big / little, hot / cool of a hit as I want. Sort of like driving a manual transmission car with a turbo charger. You can drive it slowly too. The variable voltage power supply just puts a speed limiter on your sports car.
My tube of choice is the 2-piece glass turbo tube. So nice to see the progress of the roast.

My vision for a portable is a battery pack that slides into a matching wood cylinder of the same diameter as the HI. It would fit snugly into the bottom of the HI and there would be a plug end on the top. No switches. When it is plugged in, it is on. Simple as possible. A battery similar to what is used in the Torch flashlight. The HI could be used with a cord from a wall adapter as well.
I will try to fit it into my list of things to do.
Mom, you should have known I would have already been thinking of a portable. :)
I even have an idea for a MFLB variation. Just no time.

The HI looks to be almost as small as the ettera moxie. It would be interesting to know the heat up time for a moxie. Since the HI heats up in 5 minutes, the batteries should last a while. Wish I had more time to experiment, but I need to get some HI units done now.

Overkill works too elmomuzz. I powered my Toasty Top for 4 hours last April at the medical cannabis cup using a 5 amp hour sealed battery in my backpack.

Thanks Pcpvapors. I have been turning some real beauties the last couple of days. Just need to finish them off and I will post some photos.

After reading through the thread, I'm seriously interested in the HI, but I've got some questions for any HI owners who have also used a PD.

1. How does the HI compare to the PD in terms of efficiency? I'm assuming the variable voltage/innovative core design allows the HI to darken the ABV more than a Walnut PD can, right?

2. How about ease of use? My routine with the PD is basically suck some herb into the bowl, tamp it with my finger, suck some kief onto the bowl, insert into PD. Is the HI just as simple, and could I use a similar process to add kief to the bowl?

3. How about bowl size? Is the bowl size variable as in the UD? Will varying the bowl size affect the HI's ability to brown the herb evenly? If the bowl size is fixed, or if there's an ideal size, is it larger or smaller than the standard PD bowl?

4. Finally, air flow, but I believe it's been mentioned that the HI has great air flow while the PD's is notoriously restricted. Right?

I understand that Alan has about 25 different bowl designs going, so this question might be tough to answer.

Also, a question for Alan - what wood types are currently available?

Sorry for the battery of questions but the thread has been somewhat difficult to follow and summarize without the HI having a website presence. Thanks in advance.

OKcomputer,
1. How does the HI compare to the PD in terms of efficiency? I'm assuming the variable voltage/innovative core design allows the HI to darken the ABV more than a Walnut PD can, right?

The HI at 12 volts can darken AVB completely to the point of combustion. With the use of the voltage adapter you can fine tune to your perfect setting for how long you leave your unit on/your packing patterns/& your biomaterial.

2. How about ease of use? My routine with the PD is basically suck some herb into the bowl, tamp it with my finger, suck some kief onto the bowl, insert into PD. Is the HI just as simple, and could I use a similar process to add kief to the bowl?

Same concept; in fact Alan ensured that the smallest stems are universal with the PD and RZ.

3. How about bowl size? Is the bowl size variable as in the UD? Will varying the bowl size affect the HI's ability to brown the herb evenly? If the bowl size is fixed, or if there's an ideal size, is it larger or smaller than the standard PD bowl?

There are roughly two different sizes, an exterior stem and an interior stem. To reiterate the interior stem is just like the PD's and RZ: all while the exterior stem is roughly the size of a UD silicone bowl and can be made of a number of different materials. Alan makes glass bowls & Silcon bowls for flawless taste, and stainless steel bowls if memory serves correct. These all fit snug or around the heat island.

4. Finally, air flow, but I believe it's been mentioned that the HI has great air flow while the PD's is notoriously restricted. Right?
Yes.

I understand that Alan has about 25 different bowl designs going, so this question might be tough to answer.

Specialty wood that Alan has had in stock in the past as been an Osage Orange, the gorgeous Blue Mahoe above, and Purple Heart which darkens very nicely. A sugar maple and walnut units are what most tops are made from and still have beautiful wood grains! Alan please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

Sorry for the battery of questions but the thread has been somewhat difficult to follow and summarize without the HI having a website presence. Thanks in advance.

Just tried the glass bowl with the glass tube-- Quite nice. Probably my favorite combo, functionally. The tube is still fairly thin (But the glass much thicker than the glass tubes on the old top!) so it's a good diameter for the mouth. Nice and cool too, and a good draw.
But the mahoe tubes just look brilliant. Whereas the silicon and glass look makes it look like an alien probe.

I much prefer the glass bowl to the silicon, but I quite like the silicon for social use; it minimizes the risk for the inevitable dropping.
but the glass just vapes better... all that extra heat radiating through the glass, just improves the whole system.

oh and picturez lolz

Very, very nice Orestes. The grain is lovely.

The silicone tubes don't appeal to me at all. I have tactile issues with it. I'm so glad that Alan makes other options. Your glass/mahoe combo tube is real nice.

Those are wonderful photos Orestes. Thanks for posting them. Glad you are finding the tube combinations to your liking. I try to make as many people happy as possible.

The sun was out for a little while today so I got a photo of a very interesting HI. It is pine from a porch post on an old house that was torn down. The wood is over 150 years old as it was a very old house and I have had the wood for a long time. I normally wouldn't be able to use pine wood because it is so soft, but orienting the grain 90 degrees makes rings of grains which will hold the threads.
It is very difficult to turn in this orientation as there is end grain on two sides. The end grain parts also get much hotter than the side grain parts of the HI. It just proves that heat does not always go up. It follows the grain lines in wood and can travel sideways. The mahogany Toasty Tower that I gave Dave was turned with the grain turned 90 degrees and demonstrates the heat migration very well.
I had sworn I would never make a Toasty Top from pine, but it seems to work with the HI.
As far as woods from which it can be made, the list is still growing. I do need to get more purpleheart and osage orange wood.

I should be able to make a red cedar wood HI with the right piece of wood. If it will hold threads, I can make a HI with it.

It was pointed out to me that I had the wrong email address on my very first post in this thread. If anyone has been trying to contact me and I have been ignoring you, I apologize. I have revised the first post with the correct email address.

very nice work turning TV. can't say as I recall seeing pine turned. you had to have been thrilled by seeing it take shape and hold it. very clever.

Your battery pack idea's, if it all works out the way you envision it (I'm betting it will), it could knock the log vape world on its ear, being so clean looking, easy and portable. To be considered not just a home vape but and anywhere vape. most interesting to this ol' boy.

My interests are in the portable market(to fit my usage habits and desires of vape). So this battery pack vision has got me to considering a log, could be my 'swiss army knife' , best of both worlds single purchase . I've always seen the log vapes as desirable but didn't like the 'leash' . Your Toasty Top is, in my eye, brilliant design, craftsmanship and ergonomics, the multi use aspects of it are just plain smart. clever thinking again.

I will stay tuned to the HI and this thread, with particularly keen interest in the battery pack. When I seen the short 5 min heat up, I thought well this could just fit into my portable desires of a vape.

very nice work. thank you ;) :peace:

Loving the pine Alan, really nice the way the grain lays. I have just emailed you for an order, I think it's way past due that I added a log or two to my collection.

J.R.R.Tokin',
Thanks biojuggernaut. I believe you own/owned a UD too... how does the HI compare in terms of efficiency? (i already know the UD has great airflow, massive hits etc.)

Thanks Stone_Man. Hope I can find the time to create an effective portable.

Glad you like the pine J.R.R.Tokin. I'm pleased that it worked out.

Well, I just finished assembling a few HI units. Left to right starting in the front row:

Bocote, maple burl, redheart, pine, blood wood, walnut burl, spalted / quilted silver leaf maple, sugar maple branch, osage orange, walnut burl. They are fully assembled and ready for testing. Some are already spoken for. The rest are available after they pass testing. I'm going to start on some more right away.
