Update. Getting better at this hammering. In turn, loving it more.
80% of the time I am using conduction either with an arizer air stem (the entire element fits inside the bowl and it sort of just slots on... Better fit than in the solo). Obviously there is no bowl space left so arizer stems work for conduction only. Or using conduction with my hammer stem in my 12 inch dhgate cheapy bong. The cloud this gives is crazy!
I heat for roughly 30 seconds until I can see vapor blow out. I then start my draw slow until it is really toasting. I adjust my draw speed to cool it down, I find the hammer is good at keeping the heat up compared to the solo where a nice slow sip is needed for good clouds.
I find if I keep up a nice easy paced draw (closer to a pipe or nice joint) I can leave the flame on for most of the draw if not the entire draw.
Getting better at avoiding combustion, obviously I like to vape at what most would consider high temp so it comes with the territory but most of the times I have combusted has been from me drawing slow to see the limit getting extreme popcorn taste and then.... Boooom fire :/! I do not push the limits so much now and even just direct draw the cloud are very nice!
Also worth noting that I have realised while not ideal, this unit can be used without a proper fitting stem. I have inserted bud into the large end of the heating chamber and inhaled directly off the unit on the the opposite end. Can't be done for long due to heat, and obviously up to you for risks being the unit is plastic and there is a rubber looking seal on that end but I didn't notice much of an offensive taste. Can also use a dugout bat placed directly on either end in conduction mode. None of this you'd do for fun.... But it beats most home made options when there is no choice.
Been trying it in convection mode a bit, and I do like it. I just prefer the quicker heat up times, higher temps and large clouds. I also don't get much flavour wise from vaping (or I do and just don't care for it, not sure) and I actually don't mind the high temp harshness and even the popcorn taste.
In full disclosure I still regularly smoke (although much less than I vape) including blunts and spliffs from time, and if with friends who do it I will end have a toke of ciggy/weed mixed at around 75% weed through a bong (I am australian, a lot do it here) and while it's not my preference I don't mind it. So my opinion flavour wise is probably pretty useless.
I have no doubt for those who enjoy flavour, this thing with the glass stem in convection mode would be good. I have had a couple friends enjoy it that way (although the hammer does take a little more work do learn/explain than I anticipated, it's still achievable to have a seasoned smoker blowning clouds without combustion within a session). lent my solo to a mate, only hammering of late although I'll get the solo back soon because I do miss it a bit!
What I'm loving with the hammer is
Heat time
Cloud production
Durability (had a couple drops already)
And it's versatility blows my mind! When you think it's just a butane lighter.
I want to one day spend and get maybe a cloud evo or something, but this will keep me going for a while. Compared to the solo it fits my needs much better, and for what I was looking for I consider it a decent upgrade. For all it's faults (holding the trigger, gets super hot, shitty stem fit, butane lighters are just a pain in general) I still think it Is a wonderful device purely for it's cloud production and portability.
These are my thoughts on the unit, I am no authority to be commenting on flavour and such. But if like you you want something that is going to give big clouds as your main concern it's a winner!
Also I Havnt used many of the portables generally deemed super efficient such as the firefly and some other butane things. Have used a mflb but didn't load it so not too sure. I will confidently say that I do get to where I want to be with less weed with the hammer vs the solo. Although I think for me personally this has a lot to do with the fact I hang off the solo when I'm using it. When grass is plentiful (this is Australia not Colorado
many weed finding nightmares to be had from time to time!) I love just loading it bowl after bowl and vaping away. The hammer to me is a little bit more of a pain in the ass so I find I use it less often, and it holds less so these things all matter.
Anywayssss, bit of rambling on what I think. Overall, got a few cons but you take the good with the bad when it's going to blow mushroom clouds
. Enjoy!
