The GTR

I have been working on this project for a few years now and it’s time to give it some attention. The GTR is a 12 volt desktop herbal roaster with an 18mm (male or female) glass connection. A heavy hitting go to unit that can be left on 24/7, so it’s always ready to use.
My first vaporizer was a plastic version of the vapor brothers design which used a steel rod heater inside an 18mm male glass tube. I preferred using it inverted above the glass bowl connected to a water filter, but it was cumbersome, so I discarded all but the glass, heater, and power cord to build a wand style unit. The heater was powered by 120v and the roasting temperature was controlled by a dimmer switch. A perforated aluminum body was used to dissipate the excess heat generated, which kept it cool enough to handle and protected from touching the hot glass. The aluminum body allowed it to be light in weight, which was great for water filtration use. An improved design included a detachable power cord for safety and a built in dimmer switch for temperature control. Finding a suitable glass roasting bowl proved to be a challenge and I had been so busy just trying to get through my waiting list of other products, that I left it on the back burner. I was also not comfortable providing a product powered at potentially lethal voltage levels. It was called the GTV. I have now changed to GTR, since I refer to my other products as roasters and roasting tubes.
Transferring heat to air is a matter of temperature and surface area. The greater the surface area, the lower the temperature required to achieve a desired roasting temperature. The heater in the original GTV was a simple steel rod shaped heater, which required a fairly high temperature for roasting. I recently started placing ss screen fins on ss cartridge heaters in HI heater covers for additional heating surface area, so I tried the idea using an 18mm glass fitting. A 12 volt powered ss cartridge heater in an 18mm glass fitting by itself doesn’t get hot enough to sufficiently heat the air with its limited surface area. It does get hot enough to achieve a desired roasting temperature if ss screen fins or silica (glass/ruby/ceramic) balls are added. The ss screen fins work well since the heat conducts quickly through the ss, so recovery / heat up time is faster than using silica balls. There is less air resistance through the ss screen fins than through silica balls. There is too great of risk in having hot silica balls flying everywhere should the glass fitting break. I also cannot guarantee that silica balls will never break and create sharp particles. Therefore, I won’t be using them.
Since the ss screen fins add so much more surface area, the power required to heat the air using the 12 volt ss cartridge w/ ss screen fins within an 18mm glass heater cover is similar to the power required for a ss heater cover HI unit (around 7 watts). This lower power requirement allows me to install an 18mm glass heater cover into a wood body of similar size to the HI and use the same power socket as the HI.
The 18mm glass heater cover can be either male or female depending upon the desired style of roasting and preference of roasting tubes. A 19/26mm female glass heater cover allows the use of any 19/22mm (or shorter) roasting tube. A 19/13mm male glass heater cover can be used injector style in any 19/22mm female fitting containing a 17mm flat screen wedged at the bottom of the taper, or any other injector style roasting bowl.
The GTR is actually safer from a potential burn standpoint than the HI, since the glass that can be touched doesn’t get hot enough to cause a burn like the ss heater cover of the HI can. It is way safer than “cowboy style” using a branding iron. A 16mm ID paper roasting tube is my favorite way to use the female version, since it holds a lot of material and has great air flow.
The cost of the GTR will be comparable to the HI, with similar variations in material and shape. Those on my waiting list will now have the option for the GTR. Will try to have some bamboo and heavy duty cardboard units available for a lower cost.
Here is how the female version looks in sumac wood.

I have had the distinct pleasure of having a GTR for almost a week now, and it has quickly become one of my favorite vapes ever! The power on this thing is incredible, and being able to use it with my existing stem collection makes it extraordinarily versatile. Ive been using it almost exclusively since I've gotten it! I really cant recommend the GTR enough, its what I've always wanted from a log. Leave it to Alan to nail it right on the head, this is a really special one.

Finally @Alan ;):clap::whip:

I've been teasing this a bit elsewhere, now I will be posting full fledge, as I have that sumac unit above, below are more photos of it showing different angles that Alan had sent me previously, along with photos of @Razhumikin's pine unit with purpleheart bottom cap, both so beautiful:

So far I have been using my GTR on the low end, as low as 4 watts with long heat soak and basket screen up to the edge in a lamart stem... 4.5 to 5 watts with RBT male to male WPA through various glass dry and wet, I tried higher at first though I am still learning technique with the heat soak and stem choice. Using the lamart WPA with the fixed glass screen and glass rod handle on the side is pretty great allowing to load further from the heater and larger amounts without steel mesh basket screen... I have so much more to test of course, pacing myself, excited for the paper bowl!!

Thanks for the early feedback @Razhumikin and @Shit Snacks! With all my RBT glass and the consistent quality of Alan's work this looks irresistible.

@GoldenBud hurry up and get one so we can enjoy some cloud clips!
I'll try to get a video up soon. It can chuck clouds with the best of them, thats for sure.

EDIT: Alright, here is a rather "prodigious" (pun intended) hit with the GTR. Really shows you how powerful it is that it can milk up a piece this big that quickly:rockon: This hit is on 10.2 volts

Super cool, thanks for the quick turnaround! How was the abv after that one? Also which wood is yours again? I'm on the custom list but might just go pre-made

Alan was kind enough to sell me the prototype Male GTR that is the brother piece to my female GTR, made from the same block of Pine. I have had it for 2 days now and Im really loving it, all the power of the female GTR but with totally different roasting styles. I have so far used it a few ways, my favorite being through water with a paper and cork wpa that Alan was generous enough to gift me. The way this works is the paper fits inside the cut 18mm glass end, bringing the load close to the heat source and allowing incredibly quick and tasty one hit extraction. I have also been really enjoying using it as an injector with IDB's chalice bowl; this is one of the tastiest ways ive ever found to vape. The only thing keeping this from being my preferred method is the bowl size is very large, and normally i like to vape more smaller loads as opposed to fewer bigger ones. Still, the flavor is hard to beat this way. The third way ive been using it is with 14mm/13mm stems for the MV Touch and the HI, respectively. This allows for microdosing, and the end of the stems fit inside of the cut end of the male GTR. Because of how close it gets to the heater, the same temp that gives golden brown avb in the injector gives dark brown avb in the stems, leading to a roastier flavor and more "stoney" effects. All in all this is an incredible device, the amount of different kind of experiences it can give you, even at the same voltage level, is truly impressive. There are plenty of other ways to roast with this device, and I look forward to exploring them all in time. Big shout out to Alan for quietly reinventing the log vape, I cant sing the praises of either version of the GTR enough. True to its name, it has really become my Go-To, and the honeymoon period shows no signs of abatement. Ill try to get a video of male GTR performance up soon, but as Im sure you already know, it hits like a truck. I feel incredibly honored to be one the first people to have one of these devices, and im really looking forward to more percolating out into the world, so that other people can see how incredible of a device it truly is!!!!

EDIT: Here is a short video I made last night with the Male GTR with the paper and cork wpa through a jhook. All I can say is, big yum :).

When you've had some time could you compare the male v. female? I understand it's largely about what you like to put your weed in, but are you finding advantages with one form over the other, or even preferences? I hope to get one some day and I'm intrigued by the possibility of a female heavy to cover that angle of vapor production.

If someone put a gun to my head and i was forced to choose, i would choose the female. Part of the reason for this is that I have an enormous collection of 18mm stems for my portables already, so im already well set up for using the female. The female also hits a little harder, because of how the load sits inside the device. However, the flavor seems to be a bit better on the male, at least when using it as an injector. With the stems that go into the male gtr glass the flavor is about the same, and it hits about as hard as the female, but the load size is a lot smaller. Im glad no one is making me choose lol, im 1000% satisfied with both of them. Im away on vacation now and i only brought the male with me, and its making for a wonderful travel companion.

Thank you very much, real food for thought. This will help.

Have a great vacation!

The prospect of having a heavy hitter without the risk of burning myself (or something around me) is awesome. Often I’m still medicated to some extent when I need to vape a little more. This is especially challenging when I wake up in the night. The GTR would already be on and providing a safe pathway to repeatedly dose through the night. I can load some roasting tubes before going to bed. So when my turn comes on the wait list, I’ll be choosing the GTR.
